Some words can be left out altogether in a translation. Does this sound better with or without these two words?
A different word order is needed in English. Also, apareció can translate as ‘appeared’, but sometimes it’s OK to choose a word with a slightly different meaning it sounds correct and does not move too far away from the Spanish text.

El término ‘desastre’ se refiere a las enormes pérdidas humanas y materiales que ocurren por eventos o fenómenos como los terremotos, inundaciones, deslizamientos de tierra, incendios forestales y otros. Los efectos de un desastre pueden amplificarse debido a una falta de medidas de seguridad, planes de emergencia y sistemas de alerta.
Think carefully about how to translate these three near-cognates into English. The direct translation is not quite right.
In a more formal text like this one there are often many cognates but it is important to think carefully about what the passage is about and the language that would typically be used in English when talking about the specific topic, so that you can choose the correct translation.
Before beginning, a translation read the whole text so that you have a general idea of what it’s about and its purpose. This will help you to achieve the right tone for your translation right from the beginning.

Siempre reciclamos en casa porque es muy importante para el medio
ambiente. Reciclar ayuda a disminuir la contaminación del aire y del agua,

En mi opinión, el problema medioambiental más grave es la circulación y la contaminación causada por los gases del

tóxicos dañan la capa de ozono y el planeta está calentando.
