Out of India’s population of nearly 1.2 billion it is estimated that several million collect stamps. So it is very natural that the postal administrations from around the world travel to India in their aim to cultivate new collectors’ markets for their stamps. POST Greenland is among the many stamp issuers who are on this quest in the world’s second most populous nation.

So, between 12th and 18th February 2011, POST Greenland attended an international stamp show and exhibition in India for the very first time - in the capital New Delhi. This exhibition was entitled ”IN-DIPEX 2011” and was organised by India Post, the Indian government, the Philatelic Congress of India, in collaboration with The Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (F.I.P.) and its Asian branch FIAP.

Indian woman president Pratibha Devisingh Pa-til attended the exhibition on Saturday 12th Feb-ruary at the opening of ”INDIPEX 2011”. At that time, collectors stood in long queues to be let into the large exhibition complex Pragati Maidan, which housed the exhibition halls for the event.

Trading in the opening weekend was very lively. POST Greenland’s booth representative was sup-plemented with a local sales assistant with good language skills in English and Hindi, and, therefore,

had his hands full as the many thousands of Indian collectors sought Greenland stamps and philately. Over the period of the exhibition ”INDIPEX 2011” more than 100,000 collectors and other interested stamp enthusiasts visited the show and exhibition, many of them schoolchildren and families.

POST Greenland would like to thank the many thousands of visitors to our stand. Namaste!

POST Greenland courts stamp collectors in India By Pertti Frandsen and Inge S. Rasmussen

Country Facts: By 2030 India will overtake China as the most populous nation in the world. Measured in relation to purchasing power, India is already the world’s fourth largest economy. Before 2042 it is estimated that India will overtake the United States as the world’s second larg-est economy. India is thus experiencing a strong economic growth with a rapidly grow-ing middle class who demand all sorts of con-sumer goods and leisure activities.

Besides the commemorative stamps that are issued by POST Greenland to celebrate and mark spe-cial events in Greenland, displaying a diversity of Greenland’s nature, culture, flora and fauna there are different kinds of stamps: the Definitive stamps. These stamps bear the nominal postage rates that are needed for the majority of the postal ship-ments.

The last Definitive series of stamps was launched in 2000 and this series will now be replaced with the issue of new Definitive stamps by POST Green-land. When our very first stamps were issued in Greenland in 1938, they featured the ruler’s por-trait. We are now continuing this old custom and it is again the ruler’s portrait that will grace Green-land’s Definitive stamps.

It is therefore with great pride that POST Green-land can present the new stamp series featuring Her Majesty the Queen. The first two stamps in the series will be issued on 9th May 2011 with the denominations DKK 0.50 and DKK 1.00. As with the stamps in the previous Definitive series, it is the renowned Norwegian illustrator and engraver Mar-tin Mörck who is responsible for creating both the portrait and the engraving.

The photograph used in the new Definitive stamp series was taken by The Royal Court photographer Steen Brogaard. The background of the image is Qimmeertaajaliip Qaqqartivaa (Polhems Mountain) in Tasiilaq

About Our QueenThere are genuine and sincere ties between the Crown and the people of Greenland. Many up here still remember the Queen’s parents, King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid, and the heartfelt commit-ment they showed to Greenland.

Margrethe Alexandrine Þorhildur Ingrid, Her Majesty the Queen, was born on 16th April 1940 at Amalienborg Palace, Copenhagen. On 10th June 1967, she married Henri Marie Jean André Count de Laborde de Monpezat ; at the marriage he became HRH Prince Henrik of Denmark. The Re-gent couple’s two sons HRH Crown Prince Frederik André Henrik Christian and HRH Prince Joachim Holger Waldemar Christian were born on 26th May 1968 and 7th June 1969. Margrethe Alexan-drine Þorhildur Ingrid became Queen of Denmark in 1972.

The Queen in GreenlandThe first time the Queen visited Greenland was in 1960 in her then capacity as heir to the throne. Since then, the Queen has made countless visits to Greenland, filled with joy and mutual respect, most recently in 2009 in connection with the in-troduction of Self-Government for the people of Greenland.

The well-being of Greenlandic children holds a very special place in the Queen’s heart; she is pa-tron of the Association of Greenlandic children. The Association of Greenlandic children is inde-pendent of political and economic interests and re-ceives no public funding. The work of the Associa-tion is based solely on a large group of committed members and contributions from foundations and endowments as well as business enterprises. Due to the above mentioned interests and connections, there are obvious reasons why the Queen and the rest of the royal house are – and will continue to be – a natural focal point to modern-day Greenland.

Up here, we are all looking forward to welcom-ing our Queen back to Greenland when Her Majes-ty makes another visit to our country this summer.

Greenland’s civil aviation history - from 1958 until today

The series will include a total of 12 stamps with images of planes and helicopters, which have been used in Greenland from the late 1950s until today. The stamps will be issued in normal sheets. The printing method will be intaglio at the beginning and will finish with offset. In a few years the series will be completed with a beautiful and exciting book about Greenland’s civil aviation history. The book will also include a mint copy of all 12 stamps in the series.

The history of Greenland’s civil aviation began in 1958. To tell the story we have been working with one of the greatest experts - former Area Manager in Air Greenland, Ole Dam. Mr. Dam worked for the airline from 1962 through 2003. Below is Ole Dam’s excit-ing report on the first two aircraft in Green-land civil aviation: the Catalina and the Otter.

By Ole Dam

PBY5A CANSO (Catalina) Catalina was the first plane that was used for do-mestic flights in Greenland. After an accident in April 1958 by the Royal Greenland Trade (KGH) ship M/S Umanak, in the ice off Ivigtut, it was nec-essary to add flights to complete the carriage of passengers within Greenland. About 90 passengers en route from Narsarsuaq and Denmark who were stranded in Ivigtut were instead transported by a chartered Canadian Catalina to Kangerlussuaq.

In addition, there was some air service between coastal towns and Kangerlussuaq.

After the loss of the M/S Hans Hedtof’s in Janu-ary 1959 the KGH lacked capacity for passenger services to and from Denmark, so again a Catalina aircraft was chartered in some summer months for ad hoc flights between Kangerlussuaq and coastal towns in West Greenland.

In the spring of 1960 the KGH established a scheduled flight to Greenland in cooperation with the Canadian company Eastern Provincial Airways, based on a Catalina and two De Havilland Otter air-craft. A timetable was prepared aimed at traveling between Kangerlussuaq and towns on the coast and costal traffic from Aasiaat in the north and to Qaqortoq in the south. In 1962 the newly formed company Grønlandsfly A/S, where KGH was a shareholder, took over the operational responsibil-ity for domestic flights in Greenland.

The Catalina flights continued in summer and in a few winters with up to two flights until June 1965 when the helicopter operation was introduced.

About the Catalina plane: A Consolidated PBY Catalina flew for the first time in March 1935 and was at that time purely a sea-plane. The type was used for surveillance, search and rescue and during World War II in search of enemy submarines. The type was further developed and, in 1941, a new type - the Consolidated PBY5A (an amphibious plane) - flew for the first time. The Ca-nadian Air Force called the type CANSO and it could

land on both water and land. In everyday language it has, nevertheless, always been called ‘Catalina’.

After World War II, many Canso’s were convert-ed to civilian transportation, the military equipment was removed and the interior was decorated with two cabins, where passengers sat sideways along the outer walls. The plane had two engines, a cruising speed of approx. 220 km / h and the crew consisted of two pilots and a mechanic. Originally, the aircraft included 20 passengers - this figure was reduced to 16 - 17 passengers (depending on the aircraft structure) for security reasons. During take-offs and landings the plane was sprayed with water that trickled down into the cabin, which frightened many passengers, especially first-time travelers.

De Havilland Otter DHC3The Otter was used on domestic flights in Green-land in 1960 when KGH had decided to begin a genuine timetable with Catalina and Otter planes leased by Eastern Provincial Airways. In 1960-61 there were two Otters in Greenland in the summer from May to November. They handled the flights between Kangerlussuaq Aasiaat, Sisimiut, Maniit-soq and to Nuuk. The aircraft was equipped with pontoons, which were equipped with landing gear that was unfolded when landing at airports. In all cities the plane landed at ports. From 1962, all the Disko Bay towns were served by the Otter.

From the winter of 1961-62 through to 1964-65 the Otter was also used in winter, the pontoons were replaced with ski / wheel base. In towns out-

Only five times previously have planes or helicopters appeared on Greenlandic stamps. These stamps were issued during the period 1976 - 2010. Therefore, POST Greenland is now launching a stamp series in order to tell the fascinating story of the Greenlandic Civil Aviation.

side Kangerlussuaq the plane landed primarily on frozen reservoirs, possibly snowy land. If the sea ice was thick enough, they established runways on it. Until the winter of 1963-64, when the Catalina planes began to operate in winter, the Otter plane was the only means of transport in West Greenland between Kangerlussuaq and the town of Nuuk and the north. In Maniitsoq it was not possible to estab-lish a winter runway.

The plane had a cabin with 11 seats, but could only fly short distances to include a similar number of passengers. The crew consisted of a pilot and a mechanic. It was a STOL aircraft, which means that it could start and land on very short runways. So it was ideal for winter flight in Greenland, where the lakes used were often quite small. It was pleasant to fly and popular in Greenland.

The aircraft was built from 1951 to 1967 and a number of them are still flying around the world. It was fitted with an engine and had a cruising speed of approx. 220 km / h.

The Greenlandic legend about Kaassassuk (The Or-phan) was published some years ago as a comic. It was drawn by the young Christian Fleischer Rex from Nuuk. The stamp with Kaassassuk represents the third and last part of POST Greenland stamp series on Greenland comics. This becomes Chris-tian Fleischer Rex’s first postage stamp for POST Greenland.

The ancient Inuit legend about the orphaned Kaassassuk is most suitable for the comic’s medi-um: A touching story filled with dramatic scenes. The 33-year-old animator, Christian Fleischer Rex, has taken up the challenge and he has created a cartoon based on the epic legend. The legend of Kaassassuk is so nice and manageable, says Chris-tian Fleischer Rex. It is about general human issues such as love and hate, forgiveness and vengeance and, therefore, it also speaks to people today. And the story of Kaassassuk is so filled with dramatic events that it causes the artist’s fingers to itch in anticipation of the images he will create. Christian Fleischer Rex has a dream: To develop the comic into a cartoon about the orphaned Kaassassuk.

The legend of Kaassassuk is found in a number of variations, but Christian Fleischer Rex lets his

story follow the story that Jaakkuaraq of God-thaab told Knud Rasmussen on the Danish literary Greenland Expedition in 1902-04. Thus we see the orphaned Kaassassuk, who has to go through so many terrible events, before he meets “The Lord of Force” and gets his immense strength. The legend can be read in Knud Rasmussen’s ”Myths and Leg-ends from Greenland ’, Volume II.

Christian Fleischer Rex has the technical and creative background to create this dream. He has always loved to draw and, after his A-levels in Nuuk, between 1997-2000, he was trained as an animator at the animation school - the Animation Workshop in Viborg, Denmark. This school has 20 years’ experience in developing skills and ideas to the international animation industry. After his train-ing, Christian Fleischer Rex worked at several car-toon productions in England, Germany and Den-mark, among others ”Asterix and the Vikings’.

Today Christian Fleischer Rex manages an ad-vertising agency called Deluxus Studio along with Lars Andersen, which has its office space in the “Telecom Tower” in Nuuk. Deluxus Studio solves communications and marketing functions for sev-eral companies in Greenland.

The fifth part in POST Greenland’s series - contem-porary Greenlandic art - features three very dif-ferent works of art. The women who created the works of art and the designs of the three stamps are Julie Hardenberg, Naja Rosing-Asvid and Anne-Lise Løvstrøm. The artists have each chosen very different paths with their art, as reflected in the three selected works by the artists now being is-sued on stamps.

As with the previous four parts in the art series, the stamps will be issued in normal sheets - and a souvenir folder. The souvenir folder, or booklet which it rightfully should be called, contains one of each of the mint stamps. In addition, the booklet outlines the individual artists’ other work, present-ed in pictures and text.

Julie Edel Hardenberg is a versatile and highly active artist who, as well as numerous local and international exhibitions, has produced five books. Her works are characterized by being implemented conscious, quirky

and poetic with a humorous approach to concepts such as ethnic and cultural identity. In 2005 she was selected by the Musée de L’Elysée, Lausanne, Switzerland to be among the 50

most promising young photographers in the world. In addition, she was nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 2006 for her photo art book “Den Stille Mangfoldighed” (The silent diversity), Milik Publishing. Her book “ABCT” Milik Publishing, was in 2007 nominated as the year’s best book work by the Danish book craftsmanship association and she was also nominated for the West Nordic Children’s Literature price in 2008. In 2009, Julie Edel Hardenberg was nominated to receive the Livia Foundation award on the grounds that her works are conflict redemptive.

In the last five years, Julie has designed 10 stamps for POST Greenland. About her new stamp, which she has given the title “Commonwealth of the Realm Pause”, Julie herself says:

“I work with the tension between locality, globalism and ethnicity-internationality in continuation of cultural and national identity formation based on the individual. Work “Commonwealth of the Realm Pause” - straitjacket - is about the relationship between state and individual and the mutual struggle that is in anticipation of national identity and personal sense of disunity. The straitjacket hanging on the hanger symbolizes release from this tension “Realm”.

Artist: Anne-Lise Løvstrøm

Naja Rosing-Asvid Born in Aasiaat in 1966 and raised in Qaqortoq. After a stay at the Art School in Holbæk, Denmark, she trained as an architect in Copenhagen and Ca-nada. Today she lives in Nuuk, where she works as an independent artist and architect.

Her art spans from visual art and illustrations for ceramics and sculpture. Often she uses unconven-tional materials such as sheep’s wool and sand in-stead of paint, and combines such natural materi-

als with acrylic paintings. She gathers diligently natural materials and discarded objects and freight documents, which after many years of wind and weather have a beautiful pat-ina, and she is fascinated by the story that each store on.

In 2010, she finished her high decoration of the Bank of Green-land’s canteen in Nuuk, which was exclusively made out of discarded objects and freight documents she collected in waste places, road-sides, at the harbor and other places in town.

Her best known work is probably the bronze sculpture “Amisut” in Nuuk, unveiled at the introduction of the Self-Government on 21st June 2009.

Arts stamp is Naja’s fourth stamp for POST Greenland, since her two first appeared in 2009. About her new stamp design Naja writes:

“In the background is an egg shaped planet, sun or planet, and lines of the northern lights or paths which people follow. On the motif is a key that reflects my way of combining objects in my works. The key symbolizes “to lock in, shut and hold on” or otherwise “to lock up, shut-in and open up new opportunities”.

For me the picture of how we each live our lives, the paths we choose to go and whether we choose to shut up or open up when we encounter new opportunities and challenges in life. “

Anne-Lise Løvstrøm Born 1960 in Uummannaq and is now living in Nuuk. In 1986 she graduated as a teacher from college in Nuuk Greenland.

Anne-Lise Løvstrøm is a self-taught artist and has read books to obtain her painting skills. She began with graphic forms and designs inspired by the Greenlandic legends and myths. Two subjects, the mask and the animal, have had a particular significance for Anne-Lise. So it was natural that she in the early 1980s became fascinated by the Danish Asger Jorn’s works, which she saw in Silkeborg, Denmark.

However, she also began to abstract from reality, because she often paints memories. Some are narrative, such as “Drum Dancers”, now in the High Court in Nuuk. The drum dance was in the past, the conflict resolution factor in Greenland, since the audience was then judges through their positive or negative sentiment. Therefore, the drum consti-tutes the symbol of law in modern Green-land. Anne-Lise is also working with land-scape reproductions in the form of tearing pictures of torn watercolor paper, and with natural fantasies in green and gold colours in pure abstraction, but with clear reference to the inspiration.

The stamp is Anne-Lise Løvstrøm first. About the work, which constitutes her stamp debut, says Anne-Lise: “Nature has always inspired me in my art. It is the broadest theme in my works.”

New Franking Labels

On the 2nd May 2009 POST Greenland will replace the first Greenlandic franking labels, which were introduced back in August 2011.

The new designs, which adorn the four franking labels, have all been selected from the beautiful Greenlandic fauna, and will include a polar bear, a white-tailed eagle, a walrus and musk oxen.

The walrus was photographed by Carsten Egevang at Young Sound, NE Greenland. The muskoxen were photographed by Olivier Gilg in Inglefield Land, NW Greenland.

The white-tailed eagle was photographed by Lars Maltha Rasmussen at Saqqarliit,Nuuk. The polar bear was photographed by Olivier Gilg in Fram Strait, NE Greenland.

The first day cover features a beautiful scenery from Greenland’s nature, photographed by Erwin Reinthaler.

For You, the CollectorPOST Greenland offers these new franking labels to our philatelic customers too. Four different franking labels are available, however only in set, or multiple sets, of four. You can order them mint and/ or cancelled, either first day can-celled (3913 Tasiilaq) or day cancelled (3913 Tasiilaq). You can also buy the four franking labels on a First Day Cover. Or you can buy four First Day Covers, each franked with the different franking labels. These FDCs will only be available until 6 months after the launch. All values between DKK 7.00 and DKK 100.00 are available.

Note: Collectors’ orders for franking labels are produced on the office franking machine called “Frankie”, not in post-self kioks. Franking labels from the latter requires personal ap-pearance and the use of a creditcard. Please also note that the franking labels are not part of our normal stamp programme. Therefore, they are not included in our Year Pack. However, you can take out a subscription to the franking labels. The franking labels cannot be ordered from the Greenlandic TELE-POST Centres (post offices). All orders for these franking labels are therefore to be sent to: POST Greenland, Filatelia, PO Box 121, 3913 Tasiilaq. Of course they can also be ordered online at www.stamps.gl.
