December Sermons Recap By: Nicole Stroud In December, Pastor Danny split his sermons between the Book of Mark and the Christmas Story. His first sermon was on Jesus’ authority being questioned by the religious leaders. Jesus had just cleared the temple because it was being treated as a place to make money instead of a place of worship. The religious leaders did not ask him why he did it, but rather under who’s au- thority was he doing it. Jesus does not give them the expected answer: I am doing it in God’s au- thority or in the name of God , which by the way, he was doing. He went on to ask them if John’s baptism was from heaven or men and they could not answer truthfully. Don’t expect the church to be perfect and certainly don’t expect your pastor to be this does it mean that our internal business takes priority over reaching those that are lost. The bottom line is fruit and authority. We have the authority from the Lord Jesus to go into our community and show the love of Christ.  As Christmas approached, Pastor Danny’s last two sermons were built around that theme. His third ser- mon was on the coming of Jesus and it’s importance to us. Christmas should not be about buying the best gift or spending the mos t money. It should be a time of reflection on the amazing gift and sacrifice that God gave in the birth of his son Jesus. The last sermon was a cele- bration sermon because it brought hope. Jesus, w ho was 100% human and 100% God came to this earth so that every person might know the love and hope of God. January, Pastor Danny will return to the book of Mark. As Mark continues, the church will be challenged to live out their faith and sacrifice a lot to be a follower of Jesus. Are you ready for the challenge? angel residing on earth. We are all broken. There is no one better in this room than any- one else. We are all sinners and we all need a relationship with Jesus but according to this scripture we also need t o show it with our actions. Loving God is easy; loving our neighbor is the problem. Pastor Danny chal- lenged the congregation full of preschool parents to go to church; and if they don’t have one, to find one they can attend with their children to give them a godly example. Their actions to make Jesus a priority speak louder then what they say. The parable of the tenants was Pastor Danny’s second sermon. Jesus had spoken to the leaders and they did not un- derstand so he told a parable. Jesus’ ene- mies understood that this parable was about them. Jesus made them feel exactly what they were supposed to feel in order to start planning his death and they did it knowing that Jesus was not just a man but something special from God. Their eyes were so blind that they could not see. In his sermon, Pas- tor Danny challenged the congregation to see that , the church does not belong to us! The only two things that I really miss when I am inGuatemala are hot showers, and knowing what time some-

thing will really begin! I have lived without a refrigerator andwithout a car, but I still long for a regular time to stand un-der a hot shower! I took 2 hot showers in 5 months. Andwhen something is supposed to begin at 7:00, I worry that if I come at7:30 I will either be late, or I’ll be the first onethere. I have found out that many of the things that we feelwe cannot live without are not at all necessary.

But why choose to spend more time in a countrythat is as well known for violence and kidnappings as it istourists and natural beauty? The reason is simple: I believeit is the place that I can be best used as a servant of God.

We are called to follow the example of Jesus and be a ser-vant of all, and I feel that I can use the gifts that God hasgiven me to serve the people of Guatemala. From my abilityto teach English to my ability to encourage others, I have aplace in the community where I feel I have been placed. Mydays are full from morning to late night. It the morning thereare English classes and projects, and more of the same inthe afternoon. It the evening there are always visitors in thehouse who finally go home at 10:30 or 11:00. Then it is rightto bed and more of the same the next day. But perhaps thething that I enjoy the most is encouraging some of theyoung people in their lives, and helping them consider op-

tions for their own future. It is exciting to see them encoun-ter hope where there had been little in the past. My timeand my resources have been given to me to serve, and thatis what I have really been able to do in Guatemala.

It is a pleasure to be able to work with the NewDawning Christian School. The new school library whichwas prepared by our group last summer is drawing a lot of attention from students. And the roof for the basketballcourt which was financed by group member Richard Paff will make a big difference in the school and community. Weare excited to see almost all of the graduates of our 9th

grade Basico class continuing on to the next level of school-ing, which holds well for the community. The new schoolyear will begin in January, and we will be anxious to beginanother year of serving the community.

As I return this year, I will be looking forward toworking with the school, and will also look forward to thevisit of our church work team in the summer. But most of all,I will look forward to the surprises that God has in store for me in this land of mountains, Mayan traditions, and coldshowers.
