1 Welcome Our New Freshman August 24, 2015 Welcome our new sophomores, Tshirt distribution, Jane Foygel coordinates. September 24, 2015 Bond Trading Floor Visit Payden & Rygel will host ten GBF/DECA students to visit their bond trading floor. A staff presentation will focus on bond valuation, statistical tools, and careers in "high" finance. Students will be selected based on their interest in pursuing a career in finance or accounting. Chaperones: Andrew Nelson, Gene Straub, and Judie Baumwirt. September 2526, 2015 DECA Advisor Conference Tim Turnquist and Andrew Nelson attend weekend advisor conference in Santa Clara, CA. September 28, 2015 CSUN Business School Visit Seniors visit CSUN business school. CSUN honors students will make presentations on different business majors. The CSUN honors program is highlighted. Students receive handson instruction in using the terminals on CSUN's simulated trading floor, “The Bloomberg Room”. Chaperones: TBD. Students walk to and from CSUN for this event. These seniors will bring a sack lunch, and we hope to arrange a brief reunion with the GBF/DECA alumni. September 29, 2015 GBF Potluck Students, parents and teachers meet in Highlander Hall for an evening of fun and community building activities. This event will be organized and planned by GBF seniors led by Tim Turnquist & John Yamazaki. October 5 9, 2015 QuickBooks Certification Seminar Intuit will come to campus and provide a series of instructional units that teach professionals how to use QuickBooks. Students who complete the training become "ProAdvisors" and receive certification documenting their knowledge. Kim Hogan of Intuit will lead the instruction in conjunction with staff from their Woodland Hills regional office. Location: Room B2. October 16, 2015 GBF Ambassadors Attend VICA Business Forecast Conference Twelve GBF students will be selected to serve as ambassadors to help staff run the event and use the opportunity to promote GHCHS, CTE, GBF and DECA. Chaperones: Marilyn Koziatek, Andrew Nelson Personal vehicle transportation to and from the event (probably need parents to assist here). October 21, 2015 GBF Seniors Attend Federal Reserve Workshop GBF seniors will attend this regional workshop that includes small group meetings with young entrepreneurs and instruction on a variety of financial literacy topics. October 31, 2015 – GBF Halloween Spooktakular – GBF students and teachers meet at lunch in front of the R building to show off their costumes, enjoy some desert and take a group picture. November 4, 2015 GBF Juniors Visit The Port of Los Angeles & USS Iowa All GBF juniors take a cruise through the Port of Los Angeles while they receive instruction on port activities and international trade at large. After eating their sack lunches, students tour the USS Iowa. Chaperones: Barbara Kellogg, Robin Winkler, Shayna Arhanian, Jane Foygel & John Yamazaki.

       Welcome  Our  New  Freshman  August  24,  2015  –  Welcome  our  new  sophomores,  T-­‐shirt  distribution,  Jane  Foygel  coordinates.

November  16-­25,  2015  –  Global  Entrepreneurship  Week  –  GBF’s  Entrepreneurship  students  interview  local  businessmen  and  prepare  posters  celebrating  the  entrepreneurial  spirit.    Speakers  are  concentrated  in  this  week.    

November-­December  2015  Excel  Certification  -­  Business  Statistics  students  go  through  the  basic  Excel  certification  process  for  free.    Shooting  for  all  non-­‐Capstone  GBF  students  to  become  Microsoft  Office  Specialists  in  Excel.    The  certification  exam  allows  students  to  compete  for  "MOS  Championship".    Excel  certification  is  open  to  all  GHCHS  students  enrolled  in  Business  Statistics.  

September  2015  –  March  2016  -­  DECA  Sponsored  Financial  Literacy  Campaign  -­‐  Integrates  Knowledge  Matter's  Financial  Literacy  simulation  program  and  H&R  Block’s  Budget  Challenge.    Our  students  take  the  lead  in  advancing  financial  literacy  on  campus.    $3,000,000  in  scholarships  are  available  through  a  nationwide  competition,  and  sponsorships  are  being  sought  for  campus  prizes/incentives  (e.g.  mini-­‐I-­‐pad,  Menchies).    DECA/GBF  students  promote  and  monitor  student  participation  in  this  school-­‐wide  event.  

November  2015  DECA  On-­line  Competitions  –  Sophomore  DECA  students  are  strongly  encouraged  to  compete  in  at  least  one  on-­‐line  simulation  competition  –  retail,  restaurant,  manufacturing,  sports  franchise,  hotel,  and  financial  literacy  are  all  options.    These  competitions  are  an  extension  of  our  GBF  sophomore  curriculum  in  the  Money  &  Banking  class.      

September  -­  December  2015  -­  Fall  Stock  Market  Game  -­‐  In  Business  Statistics,  all  juniors  will  pick  stocks  and  compete  in  a  version  of  SIFMA's  Stock  Market  Game  (SMG).    DECA  students  will  compete  in  the  SMG  version  that  serves  as  a  qualifier  for  ICDC.    Seniors  and  sophomores  may  participate  as  well,  TBD  by  Tim  Turnquist.  

November/December  2015  -­  DECA  Holiday  Letter  Campaign  -­‐  Entire  GHCHS  campus  raises  money  for  the  Make-­‐A-­‐Wish  foundation.    Participants  prepare  holiday  letters  that  express  something  they  are  thankful  for.    DECA  sponsored  and  promoted  in  GBF  classes.  

January  14,  2016  -­  GBF  Sophomores  Visit  The  Federal  Reserve  -­‐  All  GBF  sophomores  visit  the  Los  Angeles  branch  of  the  Federal  Reserve  Bank  of  San  Francisco.    They  tour  the  vaults,  visit  their  small  interactive  museum,  and  receive  a  lesson  on  budgeting  and  credit.    Chaperones:  Barbara  Kellogg,  Tim  Turnquist  &  John  Yamazaki.  

Mid-­January  2015  -­  DECA  Mini-­Conference  –  Exact  date  TBD.    Location  -­‐  Highlander  Hall.  CSUN  Business  Honors  Association  and  lots  of  community  professionals  will  serve  as  coaches  and  judges.    All  DECA  students  are  invited  to  participate.  

Late  February  2015  -­  DECA  State  Conference  (SCDC)  -­‐  Four-­‐day  weekend  competition  in  San  Diego,  CA.    Participation  likely  to  be  capped  at  approximately  55  due  to  bus  capacity.    Chaperones:  Tim  &  Donna  Turnquist,  Andrew  Nelson,  plus  one-­‐two  additional  parents.  

Late  April  2015  -­  DECA  International  Competition  (ICDC)  -­‐  Participation  subject  to  student  qualification  and  funding  availability.      

January  -­  April  2016  -­  Capital  Hill  Challenge  -­  All  GBF  non-­‐Capstone  juniors  will  represent  Congressman  Brad  Sherman  in  the  spring  version  of  the  SMG.    This  special  version  of  SMG  is  called  the  "Capital  Hill  Challenge".    Supervised  by  Andrew  Nelson.  

Economic  Olympiad  April  16  2016  -­  Open  to  all  GBF  students.    This  Saturday  competition  sponsored  by  CSU  Fullerton  will  receive  more  support  and  attention  this  year.    Barbara  Kellogg  will  assess  student  interest  early  in  the  spring  semester.

May  2016  -­  Senior  GBF  Dinner  -­  Exact  date  TBD  -­‐  All  GBF  seniors  and  teachers  get  together  at  a  local  restaurant  for  one  last  visit  before  they  graduate.    Cords  and  certificates  of  completion  are  distributed  at  that  time.    Shayna  Arhanian  leads  the  planning  of  this  event.    Individuals  provide  their  own  transportation,  and  pay  for  their  own  meals.    GBF  provides  dessert.  

April  -­  May  2016  Expert  Excel  Certification-­  Some  Business  Statistics  students  will  go  through  the  expert  Excel  certification  process.    Capstone  GBF  students  become  Microsoft  Office  Specialists  in  Excel.    Again,  the  certification  exam  allows  students  to  compete  for  a  "MOS  Championship".    All  certifications  are  free  of  charge.  

May  2016  -­  DECA  Awards  &  Recognition  Night  -­  Exact  date  TBD-­‐  A  joyful  review  of  the  DECA  accomplishments  for  the  past  school  year,  recognition  of  competitive  success,  farewell  to  the  current  leadership  team,  and  an  introduction  of  leaders  for  the  2016-­‐7  school  year.  

Late  May  2016  -­  Welcome  Lunch  For  New  GBF  Class  of  2019!  -­  Exact  date  TBD  -­‐  Our  rising  GBF  sophomore  class  meet  all  of  the  GBF  teachers  in  Rawley  Hall  for  a  light  lunch.    Students  provide  their  T-­‐shirt  sizes  and  learn  a  little  about  DECA.
