Sails Overboard – message from MaST February 6, 2018

Dear clubs and boat owners and sailors

Please see the below message from Marine and Safety Tasmania (MaST):

“Hope all the races into Hobart went well and that all the hard work from the Volunteers was well received by

participants.

Something that may be worth considering for this year’s races or any indeed race around the coast.

A spinnaker from one of the Sydney Hobart fleet was lost over the side. A fishing boat near Tasman got it

caught around the shaft on the 30 December and has done a fair amount of damage. We have seen the sail and

ID from the sail number. The owner of the yacht has been notified and put in touch with the fishing boat

owner.

I think it essential that if this occurs in Tassie waters that we are notified so a Notice to Mariners can be

issued. It appears up to 10k damage has occurred to the fishing boat. Considering issues with other marine

debris we need to be consistent.

Can race organisers be notified so perhaps such an issue can be part of the sailing instructions.”

Supplied by Marine and Safety Tasmania (MaST)

Incentive scheme to update life jackets The $100,000 incentive scheme, being run by Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST), will mean recreational boaters can get $20 off when purchasing a new standard life jacket at local retailers.

ON THE SLIPS and JETTIES – boats seem to be getting bigger

Next events are: Sunday 4 March – Brierley Marine Sunday Series Race 5 Friday 9 March – Twilight Series 2 Race 4 Sunday 18 March – Club Picnic Friday 23 March – Twilight Series 2 Race 5 Saturday 21 April – PRESENTATION NIGHT TWILIGHT SERIES 2 Race 1 was sailed on 19 January with nine boats competing in a nice consistent sea breeze. Line honours went to Footloose with Horizons and Bahloo coming in second and third. Handicap placings were Tara, Bahloo and Ranaguri. Race 2 sailed on 2 February also attracted nine boats. This time Horizons pipped Footloose for line honours with handicap placing going to Midnight Oil, Horizons and Pinta. Race 3 on 23 February was sailed in a very light breeze that completely faded out before any of the six competing boats could finish. That was unfortunate for Ranaguri who led for most of the race. Quilt & Pillow Factory Twilight Series 1 – Resail of Race 5 was held on Friday 16 February with four boats fronting up. Winds often exceeded 30 knots that resulted in some exciting sailing. The winner on handicap was Thylaceena followed by Tara, Meltemi and Bahloo.

Race 5 completed Twilight Series 1 in which 14 boats entered and which resulted in Pinta taking out the series win followed by the two Mottle 33’s Tara and Bahloo. All of the above could not occur without the support of our sailing staff. A BIG thank you to Jerome Jefferson for running the twilight series and Tim Marszalek for the Sunday races. The Sailing Committee – Keith Bolton, Nigel Grey and Mike Lever – are also deserving of thanks. ROYAL HOBART REGATTA Once again GBBC ran the twilight race that this year was moved to Sunday. Four boats raced in Division 2 and their placing were Midnight Oil 1st, Opposition 2nd, Tara 3rd and Wendy 4th. Many thanks to the sailing staff – Wally Purdon,John Nibbs, Tim Marszalek and Bruce McKercher.
