GB18PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS
32 WelcomeCulture Ireland GB18 is a special year long programme which is planned to celebrate and renew the unique cultural relationship which exists between Ireland and Great Britain. The programme aims to showcase Irish artistic excellence in partnership with UK institutions, venues and festivals and expand the reach of Irish culture to new audiences.
The Government of Ireland places a strategic priority on culture and creativity as the key outward expression of our identity and a critical basis for those wishing to engage with Ireland. Our culture is long regarded as an effective and deep-rooted means of articulating our values. Historically Ireland has had a special cultural relationship with Great Britain and the flow of artists, ideas and influences across the Irish Sea has resulted in an enrichment of culture in both countries.
Many Irish artists live and work in Britain achieving high profile careers and likewise Ireland welcomes artists from Britain to present their work and fuel the Irish imagination. The strengthening of our cultural links is regarded as particularly critical in times when Ireland-Great Britain relations are undergoing changes within a European context.
The Culture Ireland GB18 programme aims to build on existing relationships as well as forge new connections, which it is hoped will be further developed in future years.
Alongside renowned artists, the Culture Ireland GB18 programme will present exciting new artists, born into a world of global influences. The programme will be spread geographically across England, Scotland and
Wales and reach cities and towns outside of the main culture hubs.
Covering a range of artforms, the programme will appropriately commence with music in Scotland where Ireland is the focus country for Showcase Scotland, as part of Celtic Connections, Glasgow. The year offers an opportunity to engage and participate in theatre, dance, literature, film, opera, visual arts and all genres of music. I would like to acknowledge that the programme would not be possible without the commitment of our hosting partners in Britain whose ongoing commitment to the presentation of Irish artists is deeply appreciated.
I thank all those who are making GB18 possible, especially the team of high quality Irish artists and I wish audiences fun and fulfilment in the event packed year ahead. Culture Ireland GB18 will, I hope, be the start of new relationships and the deepening of existing ones with our closest cultural neighbour.

Culture IrelandCulture Ireland creates and supports opportunities for Irish artists and companies to present their work at international festivals, venues, showcases and arts markets including the Edinburgh Festivals, Celtic Connections (Glasgow), the Venice Art and Architecture Biennales, WOMEX World Music Expo, South by Southwest (in partnership with First Music Contact), Frankfurt Book Fair (in partnership with Literature Ireland), Tanzmesse (Düsseldorf) and Classical: NEXT (Rotterdam).
Culture Ireland runs a regular funding scheme to support the international presentation of work by Irish artists and companies. Applications are accepted from both participating artists and from international presenters. Culture Ireland also operates See Here, a scheme to support the inward travel to Ireland of international presenters, curators and promoters to see new Irish work available for touring.
In 2017, Culture Ireland supported Irish artists at over 450 events across 50 countries with over 4.5 million audience members and 7 million online viewers. Many of these artists achieved high profile awards and
critical recognition. In addition, 169 international presenters and programmers travelled to Ireland throughout 2017 with Culture Ireland to experience the work of Irish artists.
Over recent years, Culture Ireland has also curated and presented a number of special initiatives including Imagine Ireland, a year of Irish arts in North America in 2011 and Culture Connects, a culture programme to mark Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2013. In 2016, Culture Ireland presented I Am Ireland, a year-long calendar of global culture events as part of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme.
