Happy New Year!

January is traditionally the time to make New Year’s Resolutions. Did you make (and already break) some resolutions? After some serious thought, I have decided against a long list of specific resolutions. I will have just one, more global resolution.

Hopefully that will make it easier to stick to! Well, I hear you say – what is this one-size-fits-all resolution?

Simply, it is to shake off the dust of the last three years, move past the desire to stay tucked up safe at home – and get out there to experience all the new and exciting things that Christchurch has to offer.

So what’s up first - to see as many films as possible at the upcoming AF French Film Festival. This year’s enticing line-up kicks off on Feb 20th – we will keep you informed of what’s in store - and we thank Sarah Reese (Festival Director) for her work organising this event.

Perhaps you can find something to tick off one of your New Year’s Resolutions amongst everything that AF Christchurch has on offer during 2014. There is something for everyone – both French speakers and the rest of us who love things French.

There are so many ways to keep up-to-date with what’s happening at AF Christchurch –as well as La Gazette each month, check out our website, Facebook and Twitter for the latest news – or drop in and see us at la Maison de l’Alliance. I look forward to seeing you there. Perhaps we can compare notes on how well we are keeping those New Year’s Resolutions!

Vendredi 7 Février

@ 18h30 à l’AFFree entry, open to everyone

de Ruben AlvesMaria (Rita Blanco) and José (Joaquim de

Almeida) emigrated from Portugal 30 years ago. Ever since, they have lived in the modest ground floor lodgings of a chic apartment building in Paris, raising their now adult daughter and teenage son. They are universally liked around the community: Maria is the buildings concierge, always available even on her day off maintaining the high standards the inhabitants depend on. José, a building site foreman, is equally as indispensable to his boss (though both men are unaware that their son and daughter are secretly engaged).

When José learns he has inherited the family winery and the couples dream of returning to Portugal is now possible, they are elated but struggle with how to tell those around them. However, word of the big news spreads anyway, and soon their family, neighbours, friends and employers are scrambling behind the scenes to find ways to prevent them from leaving Richly informed by his own upbringing as the son of Portuguese immigrants in Paris, Alves warm-hearted, cross-cultural comedy features a terrific ensemble cast, spot-on comic timing and a thoroughly appealing central couple, whose dilemmas are portrayed with great tenderness and affection.

The eighth annual Alliance Française French Film Festival is returning to screens across New Zealand from February 20 to April 23, 2014.

Alliance Française French Film FestivalFOR SCHOOL

In our increasingly globalised world learning languages is important for many reasons – it expands cultural horizons, breaks down barriers and increases opportunities for young people interested in living or working abroad. In addition, studies have shown that studying a foreign language can improve memory, brain power and use of English. The study of foreign language is a key element of broadening perspectives and setting students upon the path to becoming global citizens. Film is a powerful tool in assisting students to learn a language. As a medium it has the power to inspire, fascinate and educate, helping to make a foreign language more accessible, and the learning of it more enjoyable.

Using the Alliance Française French Film Festival as an opportunity for education has the following benefits:

- After making a booking to the festival, organisers can provide teachers with detailed course outlines for selected films. They will provide a framework for how further learning can take place and combine with the NZQA school curriculum. Course outlines can be provided for the following films: Belle and Sebastian, Homeland, The Day of The Crows, and Tour De Force.

- Exposes students to French language in context and real-life conversations, and increases their ability to cope with accents.

- Provokes discussion, assisting students to develop critical thinking and language skills. Foreign film is a powerful catalyst to facilitate discussions, to teach international events, global finance, cross-cultural affairs and multi-disciplinary subjects.

- Offers diverse cultural experiences through a wide range of films and genres.

- Ensures learning is enjoyable, and extended outside the classroom.

- Creates immediate and culturally relevant context for French language study in New Zealand, linking schools and universities with the wider community.

INTERNATIONAL ONLINE SHORT FILM COMPETITIONTo celebrate the return of the Alliance Française French Film Festival, organisers have launched La Dernière Minute, their second annual international online short film competition. Filmmakers from all over the world at any level are invited to send in a 1-5 minute video clip based on the theme, A French Touch.

Winners will be selected by a panel of outstanding New Zealand filmmakers and arts patrons who all have a passion for French cinema. The guest judging panel includes award-winning local filmmaker Louis Sutherland, whose feature film Shopping won the Generation Grand Prix at the Berlin International Film Festival 2013 and Best Film at the New Zealand Film Awards 2013. “France has played a special part in my life,” says Sutherland, whose recent short films have won big at the Cannes International Film Festival. “The French passion and respect for cinema is truly admirable and I hope that the winner of this competition will capture their amazing spirit.”

The winner will walk away with NZ$1000.

See the festival website www.frenchfilmfestival.co.nz for entry details and terms and conditions.
