LE MOT DE LA PRÉSIDENTE

Nous changeons de saison - au revoir l’été, nous nous reverrons bientôt! Ce qui me fait plaisir à chaque automne c’est que nous ne savons jamais quel temps nous aurons. Un jour c’est l’hiver – il fait froid, il pleut, et nous cherchons nos bonnets et nos manteaux. Toutefois, il y a aussi des jours qui rappellent l’été – il fait chaud, nous portons des t-shirts et mangeons des glaces.

Nous avons eu la chance de tomber sur une de ces journées ensoleillées pour le récent tournoi de pétanque organisé par l’AF. Nous y avons vu plein de t-shirts et de glaces, mais aussi une compétition sérieuse! Je n’étais que spectatrice cette fois-ci, mais j’organiserai certainement une équipe la prochaine fois! Vous trouverez plus loin dans cette Gazette un résumé de tous les divertissements et de la compétition.

Un des grands avantages du rôle de Présidente de l‘AF de Chch, est de rencontrer beaucoup de monde. J’ai été très intéressée par le fait que notre récent visiteur du Randell Cottage, l’auteur Thanh-Van Tran-Nhut ait déjà visité Christchurch il y a 17 ans – cela a ajouté une dimension supplémentaire à notre promenade dans le centre ville. Un autre de nos récents visiteurs a été le sénateur français, Mr Jean-Yves Leconte, qui a visité l’AF Chch pour se renseigner sur ce que nous offrons aux français expatriés. Parlons donc des expatriés, membre très engagé, Julien Uguen se présente dans notre nouvelle rubrique : « Portrait ».

La fin du semestre va bientôt arriver, et vous cherchez peut-être comment rafraichir votre français ou vous améliorer. En mai, il y aura les examens du DELF (pour adultes et enfants). Passer l’examen du DELF est une méthode très efficace pour mesurer vos progrès – si ça vous intéresse, parlez en avec votre professeur ou avec Morgane.

Les jours raccourcissent et nous sortons de moins en moins, alors profitez des événements prévus pour le mois d’avril. Le Book-Club et le Ciné-Club vous donnent de bonnes excuses pour se couper du reste du monde l’espace d’un instant. Si vous préférez cuisiner, au prochain atelier du Bruno Falco vous apprendrez comment faire une de mes pâtisseries préférées : la brioche. Enfin, n’oublions pas nos plus jeunes membres! Il y aura un programme de vacances pour enfants sur le thème de Pâques. Renseignez-vous sur nos événements réguliers et spéciaux dans cette Gazette.

LE MOT DE LA PRÉSIDENTEIt’s the change of the seasons - summer is over for another year. One

thing I like about autumn is its unpredictability – how it promises winter with cold, wet days that have us all hunting for the hats and coats; but still harks back to summer with days that are warm enough for t-shirts and ice-creams.

We were lucky enough to have one such day for the recent AF Pétanque tournament. There were t-shirts and ice-creams aplenty, as well as some serious sport! I was just a spectator on this occasion - but I will definitely be organising a team for next time! You can read all about the fun and competition that took place, later in this issue.

One of the pleasures of my role as AF Chch President is meeting many different people. I was interested to discover that our recent visitor from the Randell Cottage, writer Thanh-Van Tran-Nhut, had visited Christchurch 17 years previously, which added an extra dimension to the time we spent touring central Christchurch. Another recent visitor was French Senator M. Jean-Yves Leconte who visited AF Chch to learn more about what we offer French ex-pats. Speaking of ex-pats, keen AF Chch member Julien Ugen is featured in our new “Portrait” section.

With the end of term approaching, you may well be thinking about how to take your French to the next level. Coming up in May are the DELF exams (for adults and children). Participating in the DELF is a great way of measuring your progress – talk to your teacher or Morgane if you are interested.

As the days shorten and you spend more time inside, why not come along to one of our upcoming events. Both the Book-Club and Ciné-Club provide a perfect excuse to ignore the outside world for a while. Or if you prefer to spend time in the kitchen – Bruno Falco’s workshop will teach you how to make one of my favourite French treats – brioche. Or for something completely different, we are offering a DIY workshop to tie in with the French “Sustainable Development Week”. And not forgetting our younger members - we are also running an Easter themed kids holiday programme. Check out details of these and our regular events in this issue of La Gazette.

BOOK CLUB

Quand Louis Pasteur expérimente avec succès le vaccin contre la rage, il ouvre de nouvelles et formidables perspectives à la biologie et à la médecine. Il chargera plus tard ses élèves ou disciples de prolonger ses recherches à travers le monde. Les jeunes pasteuriens partent pour de longs périples.

Parmi eux, Alexandre Yersin, d’origine suisse (il est né à Morges en 1863), naturalisé Français pour les besoins de la science, qui se forme sur le tas et part très vite en Indochine, où il passera le plus clair de sa vie, loin des brouhahas parisiens et des fracas guerriers.

Il multiplie là-bas les observations épidémiologiques mais aussi bien géographiques, astronomiques ou météorologiques. C’est que ces jeunes gens sont curieux de tout, Yersin en particulier.

Ami du politicien Doumer, Yersin se trouve à l’origine de la ville de Dalat, dans l’actuel Vietnam, puis il s’installe à Nha Trang pour y mener passionnément ses multiples activités de chercheur. Elevage bovin, culture de l’hévéa, des orchidées, de la quinine : il pourrait faire fortune mais tout va au financement des recherches et de l’Institut Pasteur créé entre-temps. La science l’absorbe, il n’aura ni femme ni enfant. Parfois il revient en Europe, mais c’est le plus souvent de loin, à la radio ou par les journaux, qu’il reçoit l’écho des conflits mondiaux et de leurs atrocités. Il meurt en 1943, conscient mais pas tout à fait amer que son nom n’aura pas la même gloire posthume que son maître, Louis Pasteur, et demeurera essentiellement attaché à la découverte du bacille de la peste à Hong-Kong en 1894.

FARIBOLES, mais l'autre jeudi en tournant à l'angle de la rue La Boétie,

j'ai manqué de percuter un HURLUBERLU qui évoluait en ZIGZAG

avec un air éperdu. Il avait dû passer la matinée à S'ENLIVRER car il

vociférait du René Char à TIRE-LARIGOT, hurlant ici "chante ta soif

irisée" et haranguant là : " le chemin du secret danse à la chaleur", ce qui au

bout du compte faisait un beau CHARIVARI de vers cassés.

Tout ce TOHU-BOHU fit bien évidemment sortir le voisinage de ses

gonds. La voisine du dernier, le boucher, la fleuriste, le crémier et même les

élèves du lycée Léo Ferré, tous se mirent à AMBIANCER la voie publique

à grand renfort de citations de Perros, de Péguy, de Prévert et de Ponge, si

bien qu'on ne savait plus du tout à quel poète se vouer. Sentant la frénésie

poétique peu à peu me gagner, j'allongeais le pas en retenant mon souffle

quand.... OUF ! sauvé : la rue Ambroise Paré.

VISITE DE THANH-VAN TRAN-NHUTRANDELL COTTAGE 2014

Wednesday March 19th, l’Alliance Française de Christchurch was pleased to welcome the 2014 Randell Cottage Resident, from Vietnam, Thanh-Van Tran-Nhut - while she was touring New Zealand.

She visited the students of Christchurch Girls’ High, who will be traveling to Vietnam in July, and presented to them, her book based on the history of Vietnam in the 17th century.

In the evening, she met AF students and members at the Central Library Peterborough for a talk entitled: “Presentation on the History of Vietnam and Asia in the XVIIth century, including the impact of the Europeans’ arrival.”

Her visit ended with a small tour of Christchurch, before heading off to Auckland and Palmerston North.

Mercredi 19 Mars, l’Alliance Française de Christchurch a eu le plaisir de recevoir l’auteur Thanh-Van Tran-Nhut, actuelle résidente du Randell Cottage à Wellington, lors de sa tournée en Nouvelle Zélande.

Dans l’après-midi, elle avait rendez-vous avec les lycéennes de Christchurch Girls High qui preparent actuellement un voyage scolaire au Vietnam. Lors de cette rencontre, Thanh-Van Tran-Nhut leur a parlé de l’histoire du Vietnam au 17ème siécle, du travail d’écriture en utilisant des faits historiques mais également de la gastronomie locale. La rencontre s’est achevée par une série de questions/réponses.

Le soir elle a retrouvé les étudiants et membres de l’Alliance Française pour sa conférence «Les Fils du Ciel dans la tourmente» : présentation sur l’histoire du Viet-Nam et de l’Asie au 17e siècle, avec l’arrivée des européens dans cette partie du globe.

Sa venue s’est achevée par une visite de Christchurch avant de reprende l’avion pour la suite de sa tournée à Auckland et Palmerston North.

AF PETANQUE TOURNAMENT

Le tournoi de pétanque de l’Alliance Française de Christchurch s’est déroulé sous un soleil radieux le week-end dernier.14 équipes de 2 se sont rencontrées, Kiwis et Français mélangés.C’est l’équipe de Pat et Art qui a remporté le tournoi devant Bruno & Emile (2nd) et Goulwen & Edouard (3ème).L’AF de Christchurch remercie le Christchurch Pétanque Club pour nous avoir reçu, notre partenaire Decant et tous les participants pour cette belle journée.

AF Petanque tournament took place last weekend on a sunny day at the Christchurch Petanque Club.14 teams pairs of players joined in to play petanque and defy the French. The winners of the tournament were Pat & Art who won the final against Bruno & Emile. 3rd place was won by Goulwen & Edouard. AF de Christchurch wish to thank Christchurch Petanque Club for hosting us, our partner Decant and all of the participants on this very enjoyable day.

UN OEIL EN FRANCE : HOMMAGE À ALAIN RESNAIS (1922-2014)

Le 1er mars dernier, disparaissait à 91 ans l’un de nos plus créatifs réalisateurs français, je veux bien sûr parler d’Alain Resnais.

J’ai découvert Alain Resnais au milieu des années 90, alors que j’étais encore étudiante à l’université. Le cinéma Eldorado de Dijon projetait « l’Année dernière à Marienbad » (1961) dans le cadre d’une rétrospective, et il se trouvait que

j’étudiais le roman d’Alain Robbe-Grillet, dont le film était adapté. J’y allais. Le film fut une expérience esthétique absolue. Le genre d’expérience qui bouleverse irrémédiablement votre vision du monde, ou tout du moins votre vision du cinéma. En d’autres termes : ce fut une révélation.

Une bande son obsédante, des décors somptueux, des fils narratifs s’emmêlant pour mieux vous égarer, le film est construit comme un labyrinthe, un rêve ou un cauchemar dans lequel on pénètre, erre et se perd à la suite de la sublime et énigmatique Delphine Seyrig. C’est un film qui pose des questions mais qui laisse au spectateur le soin de trouver ses propres réponses. Bref, vous l’aurez compris, « L’année dernière à Marienbad » est un chef d’œuvre. C’est aussi, avec « Hiroshima mon amour », mon film préféré du réalisateur.

Il en un peu d’Alain Resnais comme de Picasso : avec une carrière cinématographique exceptionnellement longue, le réalisateur a eu le temps d’explorer sa matière au cours de différentes périodes. Ses premiers longs-métrages, par exemple (« Hiroshima, mon amour » -1959, « Muriel » -1963), sont encore clairement sous l’influence des documentaires de ses débuts (Nuit et brouillard – 1956), mêlant à la fiction des thèmes politiques ou historiques. A partir de 1963 cependant, il abandonne le « réalisme » pour s’intéresser à d’autres pistes, et notamment aux relations entre le cinéma et le théâtre. C’est en 1997, avec « On connait la chanson », un film sur la dépression dans lequel les personnages se mettent à chanter des play-back de chansons populaires, qu’il rencontre son plus grand succès. Il a alors 75 ans.

Fidèle à ses acteurs -dont certains travaillerons à ses côtés pendant plus de trente ans, expérimentateur infatigable de nouvelles formes cinématographiques, Alain Resnais n’aura donc cessé d’explorer et de renouveler son art au cours d’une carrière extraordinaire, nous laissant au passage quelques-uns des

chefs d’œuvres du cinéma français. Son film testament « Aimer, boire et chanter » vient d’ailleurs tout juste de sortir dans les salles françaises.

On the 1st of March, Alain Resnais died at the age of 91. He was one of our most creative a French film makers.

I first discovered Alain Resnais in the middle of the 90’s, while I was still studying at University. The cinema Eldorado of Dijon was screening “Last year at Marienbad”(1961) as part of a retrospective, and I just happened to be studying Alain Robbe-Grillet’s novel, from which the film was adapted. I went along. The movie was the ultimate aesthetic experience. The kind of experience that changes irrevocably the way you see the world, or at least the way you see cinema as an art. In other words: it was a revelation.

A haunting sound track, sumptuous decor, a tangled narration; the movie is built like a labyrinth a dream or a nightmare in which one wanders behind the glamorous and enigmatic Delphine Seyrig until one gets lost. This is a movie which is asking questions but leaves it to the audience to find the answers. In short: « Last year at Marienbad » is an absolute masterpiece. Probably my favourite film from Alain Resnais, along with “Hiroshima mon amour”.

Alain Resnais can be compared to Picasso in the way that, with such a long cinematographic career, he’s been able to explore his own field throughout different periods. For example, one can find the influence of his debuts as a documentary maker (Night and Fog – 1956) in his early movies, like “Hiroshima mon amour” (1959) or “Muriel”(1963), which are still mixing fiction and political or historical topics. After 1963 however, Resnais leaves “realism” behind to investigate other areas, like the relationships between cinema and theatre. In 1997, he encounters his biggest success with “Same Old Song”, a film about depression in which the characters are bursting into snatches of recorded popular songs. He is 75 years old.

Faithful to his actors – some of whom worked with him for more than 30 years, the tireless investigator of new cinematographic languages, Alain Resnais, never ceased to explore and renew his art throughout his extraordinary career. He leaves behind some of our greatest French films, along with his latest and final movie: “Life of Riley”, which has just come out in French cinemas.

Pour ce premier portrait nous vous présentons Julien Uguen, un breton de 32 ans du Nord Finistère arrivé en Nouvelle Zélande en 2012. Quel est votre métier?Je travaille dans un élevage laitier, je m’occupe de tout ce qui est santé des vaches, de leur alimentation. à cela se rajoute l’entretien des salles de traite et l’irrigation en été.

Pourquoi êtes vous venu en Nouvelle Zélande?Je suis venu en N-Z pour changer d’air, rencontrer de nouvelles personnes, partir loin pour un nouveau challenge, mais aussi pour trouver plus de reconnaissance au niveau professionnel, évoluer plus vite et étudier un nouveau système.Votre endroit préféré en Nouvelle-Zélande c’est:Le Canterbury pour ses plaines formidables d’un point de vue professionnel. Les montagnes, les plages et leurs activités en plein air et la beauté des paysages. Christchurch pour les rencontres et les sorties mais aussi voir la ville et ses habitants se démener pour tout reconstruire et rebâtir sans pour autant oublier.Votre endroit préféré en France:La côte Nord de la Bretagne qui a beaucoup de similitude avec la Nouvelle Zélande avec les traditions en plus. La mer et la terre, si la Nouvelle Zélande est le début du monde, le Finistère en est la fin.Un film français que vous recommenderiez?Le Grand Blleu de Luc Besson pour le jeu des 3 acteurs (Rosanna Arquette, Jean-Marc Barr, Jean Reno), la bande son, les paysages, le scenario et le challenge des personnages.Un chanteur ou groupe Français à faire découvrir aux Kiwis?Les Shaka Ponk : du rock alternatif puissant, à voir en live et à importer en NZ! Each month we will present you one of our students, a member, or a Frenchie living in Christchurch through a portrait or interview.For our first portrait, we met with Julien Uguen, a 32-year-old from Brittany who arrived in New Zealand in 2012.What is your job here in New Zealand?I work as a dairy farmer, I am in charge of the health of the cow and their feeding. I also take care of the maintenance of the dairy barn and watering the field in summer.Why did you choose to come to New Zealand ?I choose to come to NZ to meet new people, to go as far as I could go for a new challenge. To find more acknowledgement in the work place, to evolve and learn about new system of work.Your favorite place in New Zealand is:Canterbury for its amazing flat land. The mountains and beaches for their outside activities and the beauty of landscape. Christchurch is good to meet people and go out, but also for its people who are working hard to rebuild a city without forgetting the past.Your favorite place in France is:The north coast of Brittany for its tradition and it has lots of similarities to the New Zealand landscape. The sea and the land, if New Zealand is the begining of the world, Finistère is the end of it.A French movie that you would recommend?Le Grand Blleu (The Big Bleu) from Luc Besson. The acting of Rosanna Arquette, Jean-Marc Barr and Jean Reno is just amazing. I also recommend the soundtrack, the landscape and the screenplay and the challenges of the main character is great. A French singer or French band kiwis should discover?Les Shaka Ponk is a good Alternative Rock band, and to see a live performance is amazing. This band should play here in NZ! they also sing in English. Which place would you dream to visit?Easter Island: to stay in the Southern Hemisphere, to discover the ancient civilisation.

PORTRAIT : A FRENCHIE IN CHRISTCHURCH

Je n’ai jamais été très douée pour dire “Au revoir”, et j’avoue que je n’aime pas trop ça… mais je ne vais quand même pas partir sans le dire… alors allons-y…

Il est arrivé ce jour que je redoutais tant, le jour ou je dois dire “Au revoir à l’Alliance Française de Christchurch et à la Nouvelle Zélande”. Plutôt que de dire “Au revoir” je préfère vous dire “à bientôt AF de Christchurch”.

Toutes les bonnes choses ont une fin…

Je n’arrive pas à croire que cela fait déjà plus d’un an que je suis ici (1 an et 4 mois pour être précise.) et que je vais déjà devoir rentrer en France… “Le temps passe vite quand on s’amuse”

Oh quelle année (+ 4 mois) ça a été ! Travailler à l’AF de Christchurch a été une expérience magnifique avec des missions que j’ai plus qu’appréciées: vous accueillir à la Maison de l’Alliance ou au téléphone, organiser des événements et vous rencontrer lors de ces événements pour partager la culture Française et parfois même un peu trop de culture Ch’ti… “Hein biloute”

Aotearoa et ses paysages magnifiques: ça va me manquer. Les Kiwis et leurs accents et expressions (yeah… but nah): ça va me manquer. Les produits et marques Kiwis (CookieTime, L&P, Pavlova…): ça va me manquer. La ville de Christchurch et ses cônes pour travaux: ça va me manquer et enfin le dernier mais pas des moindre… AF de Christchurch, ton équipe, ton Gold Member, tes membres, tes étudiants: Tu vas beaucoup me manquer.

La vie en France me paraîtra bien monotone après une année (et 4 mois) passée au pays du long nuage blanc…

I don’t like the task I am doing right now… I have never been good at it… simply because I don’t like it… but I need to do it… so… let it go :

It’s now time for me to say « Goodbye to the Alliance Française de Christchurch and to New Zealand », but as I don’t like goodbyes, let’s just say it is a “See you soon AF de Christchurch”

All good things come to an end…

I can’t believe it has already been a year (& 4 months) and that I have to go back to France… I guess it is true what they say: « Times flies when you’re having fun ».

Oh what a year (& 4 months… yes let’s not forget the 4 months) it has been! I really really enjoyed working at AF de Christchurch, welcoming you at the AF desk and on the phone, creating French social cultural events and meeting all of you at these events to share the French culture and sometimes too much of the Ch’ti culture “Hein biloute”

I will miss you Aotearoa and your outstanding landscapes, I will miss you Kiwis with your funny accent and expression (yeah… but nah…), I will miss you Kiwi products (Cookie Time, L&P, Pavlova…), I will miss you Quake city Christchurch and your traffic orange cones… And last but not least, I will miss you AF de Christchurch, the AF team, AF students, AF members and, last but not least, the Gold Member … Life in France will now seem monotonous after experiencing 1 year (& 4 months) in New Zealand…

Thank you to the AF team and committee members for giving me this opportunity. Working for you for more than a year has been legend…wait for it…dary. Legendary.

French For TravellersPlanning a trip to France or to a French speaking country?

Join us for our French For Travellers classes.This “French for Travellers” class focuses on situations that you will most likely encounter when travelling: meeting people, catching a train or ordering in a restaurant.

If you don’t want to feel just one of these “regular” tourists, this is the right class for you!

French for travellers (for total beginners or beginners)This 15 hour course is designed for those of you who do not know French and will be travelling in the future in a French speaking country.If you love travelling, you know what a difference some knowledge of the local language can make. A few words or a few phrases here and there can do wonders. It can break the ice in an instant and most people appreciate even the most awkward of attempts.

French for travellers classes run Saturday morning from 9:30 am to 12:30 am on 5 consecutive weeks.

Fees: $190 (including booklet and membership for 1 term).

To reflect the diversity of our city, Christchurch City Libraries have growing collections of material in Afrikaans, Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Thai, and Vietnamese. We also have magazines in Hindi and Italian, as well as children’s books in a range of languages.

These languages are held at Central Library Peterborough, 87-91 Peterborough (just around the corner from Alliance Francaise at 913 Colombo Street). Magazine titles in French include Paris Match, Vogue Paris and L’Officiel. As well as these magazines, we have fiction and nonfiction titles for both adults and children.

We also offer access to an extensive range of language learning resources, for example Road to IELTS and Mango Languages. . These are available in a variety of formats, including print, CD, DVD and online.

Membership is free for Christchurch residents, so please come and visit us.
