Integrating Technology

with Social Studiesand Awareness of Copyright Laws

Introduction

This training will not only teach you about copyright

issues, but will also show you how to integrate technology using social studies as the

content.

Exactly what is the definition of copyright?

DefinitionCopyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States (title 17, U.S. Code) to the authors of “original works of authorship,” including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works.

Copyright and Fair Use

However, for educators there is “Copyright for Educators” and its Fair Use. Fair Use is the concept that if you are doing something for the greater good of society, like teaching, then your needs supersede the ownership rights of the copyright holder under the Copyright Act. Teachers, and by association, students, can legally use music, websites, video, print, images, and the whole realm of copyrighted materials for the purposes of teaching.

What is Creative Commons?

Creative Commons

* Fortunately, for the many limits pertaining to copyright laws, there is creative commons.

* Creative commons allows people to share freely. The licenses allow people to collaborate without infringing copyright issues.

* People are allowed to share videos, music, and other multi-media projects.
