Grades 1-5 will attend school from00 am-12:25 pm (this includes a lunch period). Please arrange to have your childcked up promptly. Goal Setting Conferences are an opportunity to:

    Share information about student strengths, interests, and needs Establish a caring and collaborative relationship Develop mutual goals for student learning and behavior

    eachers, parents, and students (when appropriate) set goals directly related to stateandards for student learning as well as specific social, emotional, and behavioral goals appropriate to the student and the gravel. They also identify strategies to support student attainment of grade level standards. This hour-long event was a wonderful opportunity for our community to gather and learn from each other.

    NOTICE IT! NAME IT! CELEBRATE IT!ABC CORNERDuring September, your student inGrades 1-5 discussed a book in classtitled Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon as part

    of the ABC program. Please watch for aletter from your classroom parentvolunteer(s) for more information aboutthis lesson. The goals of this lesson areto identify caring adults in their life,develop their personal power and beliefthat they have control over their life, andincrease self-esteem. Here are some activities that youcan do at home to help achieve these goals:

    1. Boost Each Other Up: Celebrate each family member'sspecial talents and abilities. Go around the dinner tableand have each family member say one thing they likeabout each of the other members.

    2. Wall of Fame: Create a special place in your house todisplay items that family members are proud of. Assign aspace for each family member. Post items in this spacethat they are proud of (special drawings, an assignmentthey worked hard on, photos, etc.). Make sure there is aspace for mom and dad, too!3. Have your student "expert" explain the concept of "mudthoughts and clear thoughts"to the family. Have thefamily practice changing "mud thoughts into clearthoughts."4. Encourage adults at home to have frequentconversations about caring adults in the livesof youth.Identify who they are at school, in the neighborhood, inthe family. Who are the caring adults for the adults?

    FREE OR REDUCED LUNCHIf your child received a free/reduced-price lunch duringthe 2010-2011 school year and you need this program tocontinue, please remember to re-apply before October1st, 2011. Registration forms are available in the schooloffice and also in the Opening Day brochure that wassent home on the first day of school. Until the approval ofthe application, please be sure that your child has

    something for his/her lunch. You can either prepare abag lunch or pay $2.75 for a school hot lunch. Allstudents who qualified last year for free or reduced lunchwill be served lunch throughFriday, Sept. 30, 2011.

    DUPLICATING TRAININGThere will be a duplicating training on Friday, September30, from 12:45 - 1:45 p.m. in the productivity room.Please RSVP to Terri Sulgit at 252-5414 ext 108 or emailat [email protected]

    DISTRICT HEALTH GUIDELINESIt is important that our children follow good healthpractices at all times and be kept at home when they areill. A child should not be in school when he or she is illand is experiencing one or more of the following

    symptoms: Nausea or vomiting (must remain at home until freeof symptoms for 24 hours). Diarrhea (mustremain at home until free ofsymptoms for 24 hours). Severe headache. Continuous coughing or runny nose. Evidence of a communicable disease such as a rash,swelling or unusual sore throat. A temperature of 100 degrees or higher(mustremainat home until he/she has a normal 98.6 degreetemperature for 24 hours without the use of a feverreducer such as Tylenol). Conjunctivitis-pink eye.

    Undiagnosed rash (rashes need to be verified by yourdoctor that they are non-contagious; a note isneeded).

    If a student is sent home from school for feeling ill, thechild may not return that day. A doctors note forabsences over five (5) days is required. Thank you foryour cooperation in helping to keep all children and staffhealthy.

    TB REQUIREMENTAll parent volunteers at Garden Gate must be tested andcleared for tuberculosis in accordance with required stateguidelines. In order to volunteer in your childs classroom,

    chaperone or drive on field trips, and volunteer for anyschool activities involving children, you must have writtenproof of a negative tuberculosis skin testing (TST) or aclean chest X-ray on file with Garden Gate. This is statelaw. A TST or Chest X-ray is valid for four years from thedate that it is read. If you currently have a TB test on fileat your work, or another school, you may bring a copy ofit.The only TB tests accepted by the State of California are:

    1. TST Mantoux Test -Documentation of the TSTDate TST given.Date TST read.Millimeters of duration.Signature of a physician, registered nurse orhealth professional trained in administering andreading TB Skin tests.

    2. Chest X-ray must indicate absence of disease.The TST can be done through your private doctor, or youcan get a low cost ($15.00) voucher from the office for aPPD Skin Test at the Cupertino Medical Center on BubbRoad. Please bring in a copy of your test results as soonas possible. If both parents will participate in theclassroom, test results from both parents must be on file.Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

    HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT PREVIEWChildren need to acquire accurate information about the growth and development of boys andgirls so that they can make responsible decisions. In keeping with this concept, the CupertinoUnion School District promotes informed, responsible action through instruction, which supportshe home in this important area of human behavior. Parents will be provided an opportunity to

    preview a sampling of the Grade 5 Human Growth and Development videos that will be showno your children.

    The previews are scheduled for two nights Monday, October 3 or Monday, October 10, 6:00 7:30 p.m. atCollins Elementary School Guided Learning Center, 10300 N. Blaney Avenue, Cupertino. Children are not recommendedo attend no childcare provisions are available.

    DIWALI FESTIVAL OF LIGHTSSaturday October 8, 2011 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Memorial Park in Cupertino Free AdmissionDiwali is a time of joyous celebration. The Cupertino Chamber of Commerce is presenting its 9th Annual Diwali Festival of Liga multicultural family fun day, which will include multicultural music, dance performances, Kids Zone, international food court, and craft booths, and much more. In addition, there will be Coloring Contest for kids grades K-8 starting at 10:00 a.m. contest features three different age categories (grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8) and great prizes!!!! The artwork and color pencils wiprovided to each participant on the day of the contest. Free parking will be available at DeAnza College (lots A & B).
