PROCLAMATION AND RESPONSE

The Opening Prayer (in unison): (by Carol Penner, http://carolpenner.typepad.com/)

We are hungry, Lord! We come to worship today with different types of hunger

for you. Some of us sit down at the table eagerly, because we are hungry. Some of

us have come because we know we should eat, even though we don`t feel like it.

Some of us are ravenous, even selfish, for the hunger within. And some of us have

lost our appetite, and we don`t even know why. And yet you have drawn us to your

welcoming table, one and all, your arms open to embrace us just as we are. As we

settle in this morning wherever we are, fill us with your presence so that when we

arise from this time today, we will have experienced your abundance, received what

we need, and be ready to share with others in your holy name. Amen.

Prayer Chorus: “Let Us Be Bread” FWS #2260

Let us be bread, blessed by the Lord, broken and shared, life for the world.

Let us be wine, love freely poured. Let us be one in the Lord.

Time of Silent Meditation

Pastoral Prayer lifting Celebrations and Concerns

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy

kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our

daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass

against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is

the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Offertory: “Bread for the World” by Benadette Farrell

Chorus: Bread for the world,

a world of hunger.

Wine for all peoples,

people who thirst.

May we who eat

be bread for others.

May we who drink

pour out our love.

1) Lord Jesus Christ,

you are the bread of life,

broken to reach and heal

the wounds of human pain.

Where we divide your people, you are waiting there on bended knee

to wash our feet with endless care.

Chorus

2) Lord Jesus Christ,

you are the wine of peace

poured into hearts once broken

and where dryness sleeps.

Where we re tired and weary,

You are waiting there to be the way

Which beckons us beyond despair.

Chorus

3) Lord Jesus Christ,

you call us to your feast,

at which the rich and powerful

have become the least.

Where we survive on others

in our human greed,

you walk among us

begging for your every need.

Chorus

Scripture Lesson: Matthew 14:13-21 Pew Bible N.T. pg. 15

13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by

himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When

he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick.

15 When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the

hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food

for themselves.” 16 Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to

eat.” 17 They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” 18 And he said,

“Bring them here to me.” 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking

the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves,

and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And all ate and

were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full.

21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion:

L: The Lord be with you,

P: And also with you.

L: Lift up your hearts.

P: We lift them up to the Lord.

L: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

P: It is right to give our thanks and praise!

L: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere,

to give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth.

You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life.

When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast.

You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God,

and spoke to us through your prophets.

And so with your people on earth and all the company of heaven,

we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

P: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!

L: Holy are you, and blessed is your son, Jesus Christ,

Your Spirit anointed him to preach good news to the poor,

to proclaim release to the captive and recovering of sight to the blind;

to set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to announce that the time had come

when you would save your people.

He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners.

By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection,

you gave birth to your church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death,

and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.

On the night he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you,

broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said

“Take; eat; this is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, when the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you,

gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink from this all of you; this is my blood

of the new covenant poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

As often as you drink of this, remember me.

And so, in remembrance of these, your mighty acts in Christ Jesus,

we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving, as a holy and living sacrifice,

in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

P: Christ has died; Christ is risen, Christ will come again!

L: Let us pray: Holy God, in this time of illness, your people cannot gather together.

Therefore, pour out your Holy Spirit on us wherever we are;

Bless the unique offering of bread and juice

in each household within reach of my voice.

Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ;

that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.

By your Spirit, make us one with Christ, one with each other,

and one in ministry to all the world,

until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast together at his heavenly banquet.

Through your son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church,

all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

At this time, you are invited to consume the bread and juice you’ve set aside at your own

home for the sharing of the Sacrament.

ATERNATIVE BACK TO SCHOOL BASH IS A GO!!! This year, we will not be providing meals,

games, or crafts - ONLY School Supplies and cloth masks at a drive-thru event on Tuesday, August 18,

2020 from 6:30-8:00pm. In order to pull this off, we will need to purchase school supplies in bulk,

which will be purchased through your gifts to mission this summer. Please give generously. We need to

raise about $2,500. Give online here. We will allow folks to help pack bags on Tuesday 8/11 or

Wednesday 8/12. You will be able to sign up as individuals or a family to come in for a 30-minute time

slot to pack about 25-30 bags. This will allow for social distancing and safe practices. Sign up here to

pack bags. On the day of the event, we'll need twenty-two volunteers - 10 to help direct traffic and 12

to hand out bags in four different lines out in the back parking lot. Sign up to help here to

volunteer. We'll also need 500 children's washable masks so that we are able to put one in each bag,

as they will be required to return to school. Pastor Amy can get you a template and elastic if you're able

to sew this summer. Masks must be delivered to the church by 3:00pm on Monday, August 10. Sign up

here to sew masks.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL – Sunday, August 16, 1:00pm-2:30pm in the Memorial Garden (west side of

the church near Edgewood Pond). Bring a lawn chair and wear your mask for a physically-distanced

social time to connect with church friends. Pre-packaged ice cream treats provided.
