a. Aretheyabletocollaborateindiversegroups?Aretheyabletocoalescearoundaproblem,brainstormideas,andattempttocollectivelysolveit?

b. Howdotheyhandleconstraintsontime,resources,andbudgets?c. Howdotheyhandleadversity?Ambiguity?Uncertainty?Failure?d. Dotheyconsiderthemselves‘creative’anddotheyapplythatcreativityto

theirareasofstudy,discipline,andinteractions?Take‘failure’,forexample:Mostofourstudentswouldshudderatthethought.Whywouldtheyneedtoknowhowtohandle,recoverandlearnfromfailureand,eveniftheydid,whywouldtheyadmitit.Itmightmakethemlookweak.

Comparethatviewoffailurewiththeviewsoffailurebysomeofthemostaccomplishedartists,innovators,andprofessionalsofourage:“Ninety‐ninepercentofsuccessisbuiltonfailure.”–CharlesKettering“Youmiss100percentoftheshotsyounevertake.”–WayneGretzky“Donotfearmistakes.Therearenone.”–MilesDavis“Thewaytosucceedistodoubleyourfailurerate.”–ThomasWatson,IBMfounder“Ihavenotfailedonce.I’vejustfound10,000waysthatdidn’twork.”–ThomasEdison“Onlythosewhodaretofailgreatlycaneverachievegreatly.”–RobertF.Kennedy“ThegreatestartistslikeDylan,Picasso,andNewtonriskedfailure.Andifwewanttobegreat,we’vegottoriskittoo.”–SteveJobsTheadventandproliferationofstandardizedtestingasameansofquantifying,separating,andassessingstudentshascreatedanillusionofaclearrightanswer–always.Thislineofthinkingisvaluableasametrictocompareandselectstudentsforenrollment,butitalsohasatendencytooverlookalargeportionofwhoweareandwhoarestudentsare:ourcreativeselves.Tostealanidea(somethingallartistsdo)fromWilliamDeresiewicz’snewbookExcellentSheepwemustnotonlyprovidestudentswiththedata,butmustmakeeveryefforttogivethemthesoftwaretodosomethingwiththatdata.Buthereisthegoodnews:ALLstudentsandadultsalikealreadypossesscreativeabilities,butrarelyknowhowtoapplythemtothechallengesandtasksthattheyface.That’swheretrainingintheartscomesin.Inrecentyears,innovationandcreativethinkinghavebecomethecatchphrasesintheprivateandpublicsectorofoureconomy.ThedaysoftheCEOasrockstarareover.Moreandmore,companiesrecognizethattheyneeddiverseteamsofindividualsthatcanbuilduponideasandcollaboratewithothersinadvancingtheseideas.Theywant“peoplewhocanthinkintuitively,whoareimaginativeandinnovative,whocancommunicatewell,workinteamsandareflexible,adaptable,andself‐confident”(KenRobinson).Fromcompanieslargeandsmall,start‐upstoestablishedcorporateentities,businesseshaverecognizedthesamethingourownstudentsrecognizetojustgetINTOWashingtonUniversity:theyneedtostandout.Theyneed“anedge”.CantheartshelpusunderstandandgrasptheuncertaintiesthatinevitablycropupinANYdiscipline?Cantrainingandinstructionincreativeandcollaborativeabilitiesgiveourstudentsan‘edge’.TheshortanswerisYES.

Inbothstudyandpractice,theproposedGatewaycoursewillattempttoempowerstudentstoharnesstheircreativeandcollaborativeabilitiesinthethreeways:

1. Definingthemselvesascreativeandidentifyingtheircreativestrengthsandweaknesses.

2. Comprehensivestudyofand,insomecases,discussionwithcreativesfromalldisciplinesincludingartists,innovators,andeducators.

3. Teachingstudentstodevelopintoaninnovatorthatisunafraidtoaskstupidquestions,proposecrazyideas,and(whennecessary)fail.

Wemustfocusongivingstudentsboththefreedomandasafevenuetoexperimentwithideasthattheygleanfromdiscussionontopicsthatsimultaneouslyempowerthemtovoiceanopinionanddebatethoseopinionswithprofessorsandclassmatesalike.Wemustofferaclasswherecreativity,stupidquestions,andcrazyideasarebothencouragedandembraced.Creativitymustbeconsideredavaluablegoalandonethatleadstolateralthinkingandinnovativeideas.“Thewaytogetgoodideasistogetlotsofideasandthrowthebadonesaway.”–LinusPaulingDeanLindseyandmyselfareproposingachemistryclass…

"Adesignerhasonefootinimaginationandoneincraft."–BrianCollinsAshasbeenevidencedinpracticethusfarinbothcourses,acourseontheDesignThinkingandtheCreativeProcesscannotexistwiththestudyofvarioustheoriesonthecreativeprocessasitssolecomponent.Asadesignerdoes,thisproposedcoursemustswingbetweenconceivingofideasandtryingthemoutinordertoengenderconfidenceinthestudent.I'vedesignedtheIdeationcoursetoalternativelyswingfromthestudyofsomeofthegreatartisticthinkersanddesignersofourtimetotheactualcollaborationandpracticeamongstthestudentsenrolledinthecourseasameansoftestingthecreativetoolsandideasthey'vejuststudied.Thistypeofdancewithuncertaintyofone'sideasisevidentinallaspectsofscientificthoughtandnolesssointhisclass.TheDesignThinkingandCreativeProcessclassshouldexistasaspecialhybridbetweenthestudyoftheoriesontheconceptsofcreativityandcollaborationandtheactualpracticeofthosetheories.

AnonymousstudentreviewsofIdeation:IdeaGeneration(Drama135)asproof‐of‐concept:

ItwasliterallyexactlytheDesignclassthatIwaslookingforthatIjustdidn'tseeanywhereelseatWashUThewholeideabehindIdeationwasreallyintriguing.Whatwassogreatwasthethoughtthatthecollaborativeaspectsofdesignthinkingwelearnedinclasswereapplicableprettymucheverywhere.It'sagreatmantra,andsomethingthatanyonecantakeawaytoanyprofession.Icameintoitnotknowingwhattoexpect.Thisclassdidsparkagreatdealofinterestinthedesignaspectoftechnologytoday.IthoroughlyenjoyedtheclassandIlearnedinformationthatIwouldnothavelearnedotherwise.

Iamnotusedtothinkingaboutcreativity.Ifeelmostcomfortableunderstandingsystemsandhowthingswork.ThisstudyofcreativitywasnewtomeandIenjoyedit.

Whataspectscontributedmosttothelearning?

Ilikedthegroupprojectsandthefocusondesign.Iwasinspiredbythepossibilitiesofdesignandcollaboratinginagroup.

Collaborativework.IwasabletoexplorewhoIwascreativelythroughthecontextsofothers.

AssessmentPlan:Studentswillbegradedonparticipationindiscussions,team‐gradedbybothpeersandfacultyinLABenvironments,onepresentationgrade(2ndThursday).Afinalmajorportionofthegradewillbeinthefinalproject(generativelab)presentations.(DeanLindseyiscurrentlycreatingamoreelaboratedescriptionofourAssessmentplanforthecourse).Iwillresubmitanewproposaloncethatiscreated(Rob1/29)Budget:Corefacultyplanningstipend(summer2015‐$5Kx2) $10,000Affiliatefaculty/guestlecturers(nonWashU) $2400GraduateT.A.’s(fourtotal) $16,000TechnologyandArtSupplies: $3000TotalBudget: $31,400
