The work consists of two volumes in one: the title-page to the second volume reads “OUR FIRST LIEUTENANT AND FUGITIVE PIECES, IN PROSE,” and continues as for the first volume. This copy has a small label pasted onto the free endpaper with the inscription: “To Thomas James Serle Esquire With the Sincerest regard of an ancient friend and Fellow Labourer The Author”. This was the first volume of plays in verse published in Australia and the third volume of verse published in Tasmania. David Burn emigrated to Tasmania in 1826 after serving in the navy, and became active in Tasmanian public affairs, notably in the movement for the cessation of transportation. He later moved to Sydney and to New Zealand where he engaged in journalism, dying at Auckland in 1875. #64277 A$3500.00

The author, not to be confused with the British statesman, was an American novelist (1871-1947) who enjoyed great success and acquired considerable wealth. In his early career he was editor of the Army and Navy Journal. Later (1917) he toured the battlefields of World War I and in his first non-fiction work wrote about what he saw. Amongst his other novels he wrote “The Crisis” (1901) also calculated (in retrospect) to create confusion with his namesake. This novel concerns the story of one Honora Leffingwell born at Nice, in France, and her subsequent life in St. Louis on the banks of the Mississippi River. #29222 A$30.00
