Gas springs and dampers forindustrial applications
For decades now, STABILUS gas springshave been well known for their successfuluse in the automobile industry.Since the early 1960’s, STABILUSproducts have also been used in thefurniture industry, notably for applicationsin swivel chairs.Today, the gas spring has become apractical design element in more than100 different applications.Compact design, high level of operatingconvenience and safety in use are some
of the reasons for the constant growth inthe use of gas springs for the most variedof applications.STABILUS products are found in thegeneral furniture sector, for example, toadjust table height or the angle of headand foot sections of beds. In the medicalengineering industry, gas springs anddampers are used ln hospital beds, theatre couches and in the operation ofmassage and beauty couches andequipment. In the office equipment sector, gassprings are an invisible aid in thepositioning of covers and lids of
photocopiers, acoustic hoods andcomputer swivel arms. In buildings, gassprings perform the task of openingroof windows or assisting the operationof awnings. In the mechanical engineering industry,STABILUS gas springs are used to anincreasing extent in safety and noiseprotection panels which can beeffortlessly opened and closed by gassprings. The applications for STABILUSproducts are as varied as your ideas. We will be pleased to advise youregarding your specific application.

Operating principle of a gasspring
The gas spring is a hydropneumaticadjusting element, consisting of apressure tube with a connecting fitting,a piston rod with piston system and apiston rod connection fitting.
A special seal and guide system sealsoff the interior to atmosphere. The gasspring is filled with compressed nitro-gen. The filling pressure acts on thecross-sectional area of the piston rodand produces an extension force, whichcan be freely selected within physicallimits. If the extension force of the gasspring is higher than the force of thecounterweight, the piston rod extends. If the extension force is less, it con-tracts.
The extension rate is determined by theoverflow cross-section in the pistonsystem and pressure tube, respectively.
The interior of the gas spring is fillednot only with nitrogen, but also with aprecisely defined quantity of oil which,on the one hand, ensures properlubrication of the piston and the sealguide system and, on the other, provides for proper dampening of thepiston in the end position.
The gas spring is completely mainte-nance-free in operation. In the standardversion, the gas spring is designed forat least 50.000 operations.

The gas spring can be designed with anapproximately linear, progressive ordegressive spring rate curve, to match theparticular need. The characteristic curve of the springdescribes the progression of the force ofthe gas spring over the stroke, from theextended to the compressed state andvice versa. If the spring rate is flat and progresses ina practically linear manner, the force of thegas spring consequently rises only slightlyover the entire spring travel.Spring rate: X = F2 : F1
The force diagram on the left shows theline of the extension and compressionforce with a flat spring rate. The differencebetween the two lines is the result of thesystem friction produced during com-pression and extension. The measuring points F1 and F4 are eachlocated 5 mm before the fully extendedand compressed stroke. The measure-ments were conducted at a temperatureof 20° C.You can get details regarding tolerancesfrom the technical drawings or ondemand.

The LIFT-O-MAT® raises weights and offers a weight compensation. If the extension force of the gas spring is higher than the force of the counter-weight, the piston rod extends, e.g. Iifting the hatchback. If the extension force is smaller, it compresses.

Product Range
The BLOC-O-LIFT gas spring isavailable both with resilient and alsowith rigid blocking as follows:
• With pressure tube diameter 22 and 28 mm• In different lengths, especially also in different strokes (10 - 50 mm)• With different end-fittings• With special sealing systems, suitable for continuous release• With special sealing systems for any desired installation position• With short release travel of 1 mm instead of standard 2,5 mm• With pressure relief valve• With reversed valve operation (valve closes during release)• Without extension force (HYDRO-BLOC)
Accessories:Release head with lever and handle, buffers and nuts, release head withbowden cable and operating unit
Variants
Depending on requirements, the gasspring can be designed with rigid orresilient blocking.
Resilient blocking is achieved if thepiston moves over the lift range in thegas as the gas is compressible. Rigidblocking is achieved if the pistonmoves over its lift range in the oil as theoil is not compressible.
In the case of rigid blocking, the gasand oil spaces are separated by aseparating piston and, depending ondesign, rigid blocking is possible in theextension or compression direction.
Swivel chair engineeringfrom STABlLUS
Until the introduction of the gas springin series production, swivel chairs wereadjusted by means of spindles or detentmechanisms. The gas spring has per-formed this function to an ever increasingextent since the sixties as a practicaland compactly dimensioned adjustingelement. Many hundreds of swivel chairmanufacturers throughout the worldhave been placing their faith fordecades now in STABILUS gas springs.
Swivel chair manufacturers and practi-tioners of occupational medicine rightlyregard STABILUS as the pioneer in thedevelopment and manufacture of gassprings for ergonomic sitting in theswivel chair sector. The gas springenables a swivel chair to be adjustedsteplessly in height in the most com-fortable manner. A single operation ofthe adjusting lever, and the swivel chairuser glides downwards in a gentlycontrolled movement. If the chair is notoccupied, the seat glides smoothlyupwards. A pleasant deep springingexists in the working position. Thesame principle is applied for adjustingthe seat angle and backrest. The gassprings can also be designed on requestwith a fixed blocking mechanism.
Operating principle
The STAB-O-MAT/STAB-O-BLOC- andBLOC-O-LIFT - gas springs arehydropneumatic adjusting elementswhich can be set to any desired heightand feature a self contained gas/oilsystem as an energy store. The springforce is produced by a compressednitrogen filling.
A special sealing system betweenpiston rod and tube wall seals off theinner space to atmosphere. The fillingpressure acts on the cross-sectionalarea of the piston rod and producesthe extension force F1, which can befreely selected within the physical limits.
Pioneeringachievements
STABILUS, a member of the SACHSGroup within the MANNESMANNConcern, with over 60 years experiencein the construction of hydropneumaticequipment, presented to the swivelchair industry the world’s first standardproduction gas spring in 1962.
STABILUS sees itself as a problemsolver for the most varied demands andhas attached the greatest significanceto perfect operation and safety sincethe start of production in 1962.STABILUS gas springs comply withDIN standards, have the authorisedsafety seal of test institutes (such asthe German Technical InspectionAuthority - TÜV - and regional industrialinspection boards - LGA), and are inconformity with leading Europeanstandards.
STABILUS, with its production facilitiesin Germany, United Kingdom, Spain,Italy, USA, Mexico, Brazil and Australia, have been an increasingly importantsupplier for several decades now to theswivel chair, furniture and buildingindustries. Each STABILUS gas springembodies the experience of more than750.000.000 units produced.

Stepless height adjustment of swivel chairsVariants
The STAB-O-MAT and STAB-O-BLOCgas springs are designed in accordancewith the same operating principle. Thedifference is in the arrangement of anadditional supporting tube around theSTAB-O-BLOC gas spring. Whereasthe STAB-O-MAT gas spring with itssupporting tube performs the guidingfunction in the column, the gas spring ofthe STAB-O-BLOC is surrounded by anadditional outer supporting tube whichabsorbs the bending stress. The gasspring is flanged into this supportingtube or alternatively screwed in topermit easy subsequent replacement. Both gas spring variants feature anouter tube with a chromium-platedsurface which is guided by a bushwithin a support tube.
Product Range
STAB-O-MAT and STAB-O-BLOC areoffered as follows:
• In the diameters 28 and 30 mm• In various lengths, offering a range of adjustment stroke lengths (50 - 300 mm)• In various taper dimensions for mounting into the seat carrier• As complete columns with various diameters of upright tube and taper dimensions for swivel chair bases• As telescopic column for over proportional adjustment range• With various surface finishes of upright tube• With additional mechanical deep springing systems, also in lowest seat position
• With adjustable release pins• STAB-O-MAT with short release travel of 1 mm instead of standard 2,5 m• STAB-O-BLOC with standard release travel of 1,7 mm• STAB-O-MAT with reduced release force• With cardan guide bushes as sliding element not susceptible to twisting
