AD2.1 HOLBECK URBAN STUDIOURBAN REDEVELOPMENT

Holbeck Urban beauty

Beauty can be found in the most unexpected places, this underpass in Holbeck, Leeds, follows such a pattern. This image represents places normally expected as gloomy and dingy, can prove otherwise. This particular underpass contrasts the dilapidated surrounding area with outstanding stone work and dramatic lighting. The lighting strips in the ceiling disperse through the sloped cobbled wall creating a ltering affect and act as spot lightson the roof. Checkered patterns on the ceiling provide more texture to the environment. These features may not be notices at rst, as this is a dynamicplace where there would be lots of movement and little time to notice.

This particular underpass links Beeston to Holbeck and or both fairly dilapidated parts of Leeds. The underpass provides a feeling of sanctuary from the outside world whilst walking from one side to another, which is usual as underpasses usually create a sense of decay and discomfort. This was the main reason why I found this image interesting, the contrast from the outside world to the shelter of the underpass.

Brief Writing

Concept

By going to the gym and getting t local residence can also have the opportunity to earn money off their home energy bill each month. This will be done depending on how much energy they generate back into the grid from using certain n machines.This ides addresses almost every aspect of my brief which was issues of stainability, poverty,heath and antisocial behavior.

Only certain machines can be used to generate power and technology limits other machines. However as technology improves other machines can be added.

Development

The second model looked at the antisocial aspect ofHolbeck. The slopping wall was aimed at keep people off climbing the building. The school gym in Barcelonaused a similar design feature but cladding the buildingin recycles fencing which was very difficult to climb.

As the site is such an open space a good separation between the site and the main road would make thesocial space for tranquil more secluded.

The boxing ring on the second oor would elevate the room and put the gym on display to the wholemarketplace, presenting the gym like a Professional ght.

If the building was to be placed on the end of a row of houses there would have to be a separation between the buildings as residential and commercial would interfere with each other.

A cantilever could obstruct the view of people in the market and shouldn't be to large this could restrict the view.

A sense of hierarchy could be created by raising the building slightly higher than the rest of the surrounding back-to-backs. This would create a sense of dominance and will be the centre of attention.

Potential viewing points around the building could be allocated for better perspective views.

Separation between non gym members, gym members and boxing members would be important.A hierarchy of space needs to be set out through out the building.

Glazing should be put on the south facing side in order to let in more sun light and walls on the north in order to effectively use thermal massing. Glazing on the roof would not be a viable option as glare andover heating would be produced.

The separation of the boxing gym on the top of the normal gym produces a podium affect.

Window arrangement would be arranged so people cant directly look into the building as people are training and aren't being watched.

Red recycled holbeck brick from the terraces and structural steel columns would be used as Holbeck has a veryindustrial history and red brick will t in context with the site.

Originally reusing the terraces could of provided a good base for a building with many different varying designs. however the “display box”, thesecond level, was always the main drive behind the design and needed to be orientatedfor maximum viewing potential. This model looked at some of the above aspects for this building.above aspects for this building.

Site Development

As the site is such a large open space in the centre of housing, people will be drawn in from all parts of Holbeck.

Splits in the site should be distinct so people can determine the different parts.

Distinct paths of peoples ow across the site is shown in the above diagramthis shows the directions in which people move across the site.

Having low ower bed will produce a gap between the ground and the tree canopy which it possible to look from one side of the market place to the otherwhich will add antisocial behavior and help the police.

Green spaces will also provide more space for people to move around these willbe lawns and trees

A path through the building and site would draw people from the centre of Holbeck right through the centre of the site. through the building inbetween public and private space.

Public on the left will consist of reception and foyer spacewhere as the split to the right members only.

Market spaces will have almost random set out. This has been inspired byEuropean town markets which weave through small spaces and streets creatinga journey though the stalls.

The building will blend in with the new outdoor social marcket space and can use the surrounding space for many other activities that can be done outdoor. Such as cross country running, cycling andyoga. the development could even make use of the large green space acrros the road which already has baskitball coarts and a football pitch.
