What is the Future for the Club????? Since, as of yet, no members have stepped up to lead the Club into the future – and elections are scheduled for the next meeting – for Board ( perhaps the last Board) had no choice but to make the hard choices.

So What’s Next? The Board has scheduled a special meeting for Wednesday April 4 at 10:00 am at Diane Bennett’s house and results will be announced at the April meeting.

So What’s on the Table? Agenda Items Include: Changing Club to Social Club; Change Day of the Week? Social Meetings Without a Speaker; What happens to Events – Spring Picnic, Christ-mas Luncheon, Tim Mahoney Preso? What happens to the Newsletter, Membership Data Base,Website?

Why is this happening? Our roster has 578 paid members. 550 of you live in Arizona. We are in-credulous that of 550 members, we cannot find 3 or 4 people willing to step up and help out the Club that has long included friends and work associates.

As Editor of the newsletter, my role has been to provide members with the summaries of the pre-vious meeting, particularly the presentations by our speakers. I also promote upcoming events sponsored by our other Valley clubs. But we all know that the first thing all of you read first is the list of Passings, and we no longer get that information from Honeywell. Sponsored events are al-ways available on the HRC website so why repeat? If there are no meetings, what do I report in the newsletter? Why have a website since its main function is to deliver the e version of the news-letter? In my other role, I maintain the database of members, manage the dues notice process, prepare and distribute the club roster. Combining these roles allows me to distribute the snail mail version of the Newsletter.

This is not a “no brainer”. Decisions include: what to do with treasury moneys; what happens to the Scholarship Program; how do we continue to communicate with members; who creates new operating guidelines, and what happens to the membership database information, just to mention a few. Please send any thoughts you have to our Board President, Mark Steele at [email protected]. You are also welcome to attend any of the Board meetings which are held at 11:00 AM on the first Wednesday of each month. Contact Mark for location.

I do wish to thank all of our members for their support of the roles I have played in behalf of the Club.

Mark Steele welcomed members and guests on March 7. Bob Davenport led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Mark asked for a show of hands from those present who would support the idea of a scheduled Social Event rather than formal presentations. Approximately ½ of those in attendance raised their hands (perhaps 65 total audience).

Our presenter was Karen Blackmore, wife of Walt Blackmore. Her previous Club presen-tation topic was Genealogy. Her latest topic was Reducing Life’s Clutter. She spoke from personal experience due to the passing of several family members.

Clutter is defined as: a large group of stuff not organized; a collection in an untidy mess; things owned but not used; things saved that are sentimental, expensive or feel guilty about getting rid of. Sound familiar to anyone?

Why declutter? – move to a smaller house; have moved and it’s too crowded; too many piles; can’t find what you do have; don’t want others (heirs) to sort it for you.

Deciding to keep or discard? Would you re-place it if it were lost in a fire?

Donna Smallin, Author suggests for each item, ask – do I need it?, do I love it?, does it make life easier?, would I pay to have it moved?

Jamie Nook, “Keep This, Toss That”, asks: if I saw it at full price in a store, would I buy it?

if I keep it, would I remember that I had it? if it’s broken, would I pay to repair it?

Various authors have proposed ideas for re-ducing clutter including:

Set a goal of 100 items /month, i.e. 3/day 3 boxes: keep; donate; toss 4 boxes: keep; sell/donate; toss; decide later

Professional help is available: Nat’l Assn. of Professional Organizers Nat’l Assn of Senior Move Managers

Find a system that works for you. Read books, ask friends, check out blogs, use the pros. Set goals – needs vs. wants, must haves, can replace, can live without. Things you should do last include dealing with old letter, photos, old documents.

Other tips: collect like objects in 1 place; do 1 thing at a time – 1 drawer, 1 room, 1 shelf, 1 collection, 1 hour. Clothes – try on everything; turn hangers around after wear-ing – donate everything with hangers not reversed after x months. Don’t forget your computer – unsubscribe, clean up your screen, use and empty the recycle bin, de-lete items from SENT file.

There is lots of help out there and likely we all need some. Authors include:

Donna Smallin Jamie Nook Geralin Thomas

Cassandra Aarssen Marni Jameson Margareta Magnusson

PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

It was good to see many of you at the March meeting and we enjoyed hearing Karen

Blackmore give us ideas and hints on how to de-clutter our homes. Thank you Karen!

Next month we will be hearing a presentation by Marshall Campbell from Morgan Stanley

concerning, among other things, impacts of the new tax law on retirement planning. It

should be informative and I look forward to seeing you there. If you have a subject you

would like presented at the monthly meeting please let a board member know.

Your Board continues to work on the future of the club. We will be having a special Board

meeting dedicated strictly to the club future on Wednesday, April 4th

at 10:00 AM at Diane

Bennett’s home. You are welcome to attend and if you can’t make the meeting but have

some ideas send them to me at [email protected] . If you plan to come let me know. We

have had a volunteer to be Treasurer if we can find a President and Vice-President. Please

give serious consideration to stepping up and helping the club.

By the time you receive this, we will have had our Spring Potluck. It is shaping up to have a

good turnout and I am sure we will all have had a good time.

I encourage you to attend the club meetings on the first Wednesday of each month at the

Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Rd., Scottsdale. I hope to see many of you

at our April meeting!

New Honeywell Corporate policy will no longer provide the Club with lists of new retirees or deceased employees. If these policies stay in force, we will need all Club Members to inform us if you know of a new retiree or if you have learned of the passing of a former employee.

Monthly Charity News

Your Board of Directors has voted to donate $100 each month to the Scholarship Fund and the other $100 to local charities as usual. Our March donation went to Crisis Nursery. Club guidelines dictate that we support local charities exclusively. A list of the charities from which the board chooses donations monthly is posted on the website. If you have a favorite charity you would like the club to consider for donations, please bring it to our attention.

50/50 winners were Dick Dippold and Mark Steele.

If anyone has contact information for any of these members, please call or email Stu Mitnik at 480-897-1629 or [email protected]

Scholarship applications, for next year, opened this December 1st. The Scholarship Program is jointly sponsored by the Honeywell Retirees’ Social Club, and the Garrett Retirees' Social Clubs of Arizona. The source of the funds for these scholarships is shared among the participating Retiree Clubs, Honeywell International (HON), and our generous members.

Our goal is to identify eligible undergraduate and graduate college students, who are descendants of a participating Retiree Club member, and award them money to help reduce their costs for a college education. Our awards generally range from $1000 to $1200 per recipient per year, based on the funds that are available. To date, we have awarded almost 50 thousand dollars, to 46 students attending Arizona State, University of Arizona, and Northern Arizona University.

Find application and award information on our website at: http://hrcaz.org/PermPages/Scholarships.htmlwww.hrcaz.org.

Our Foundation Board Members are also happy to help. Contact info is below.

Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an im-pressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him ..(Oh, man, this is so bad, it's good) ... A super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

Larry and Bob, two friends, met in the park every day to feed the pigeons, watch the squirrels and discuss world problems.

One day Larry didn't show up. Bob didn't think much about it and figured maybe he had a cold or something.. But after Larry hadn't shown up for a week or so, Bob really got worried. However, since the only time they ever got together was at the park, Bob didn't know where Larry lived, so he was unable to find out what had happened to him.

A month had passed, and Bob figured he had seen the last of Larry, but one day, Bob approached the park and -- lo and behold -- there sat Larry! Bob was very excited and happy to see him and told him so. Then he said, ‘For crying out loud Larry, what in the world happened to you?

Larry replied, 'I have been in jail.'

'Jail!' cried Bob. What in the world for?'

'Well,' Larry said, 'you know Jane, that cute little blonde waitress at the coffee shop where I some-times go?'

'Yeah,' said Bob, 'I remember her. What about her?

'Well, one day she filed rape charges against me; and, at 89 years old, I was so proud that when I got into court, I pleaded 'guilty'.

'The damn judge gave me 30 days for perjury’. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings.

As she left, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, "Who was THAT?" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued.

At last, she headed for the door, saying, "Grandpa, I think you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself!" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, "Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today."

The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool. "That's interesting." she said. "How do you make babies?"

"It's simple," replied the girl. "You just change 'y' to 'i' and add 'es'."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6-year-old was asked where his grandma lived. "Oh," he said, "she lives at the airport, and when we want her, we just go get her. Then, when we're done having her visit, we take her back to the airport."

Spring Picnic

The turnout, (at least 45 by one count), was a little disappointing, although it by no means

made the event any less enjoyable. We had 64 last year, so I was thinking we might get 70,

since many of those who attended last year said they really enjoyed it. The name badges

worked really well.

Winners at the picnic for the various activities were:

50/25/25 - $35.50 ea – Barb Baden and Frank Holman

$25.00 gift certificates (2) – Darrel Golic and Diane Rencenberger

Silent Auction – Frank Holman and Juanita Barreros
