Police in Bishop Auckland will be able to deal with crime and anti-social behaviour in the town centre more effectively, after setting up base in Morrison’s supermarket.Bosses at the store have kindly provided officers with a room, which will allow them to update and access police records without having to return to their main building at Woodhouse Lane. The objective of the scheme is to increase police visibility within the town and also within the store itself.Alan Mather, Morrison’s Store General Manager commented, “It is good to have a strong partner-ship with the local police and community support

officers, and it is also good for all our customers, to give them peace of mind.”Alex Riley from Bishop Auckland Beat Team also spoke about a new initiative which will be commencing shortly called Operation Norway, which will be targeting shoplift-ing, theft, vehicle crime and anti-social behaviour over the Christmas period.Similar operations have been carried out in previous years and have proved to be very successful.Alex said, “Both plain clothed and uniformed officers will be out and about in the town and if anyone is suspected of any crime, both their vehicles and their homes will be searched.”

In the early hours of 13th October, police stopped a Vauxhall Combi van in the South Church area as it was being driven without lights. They smelt alcohol on the breath of the driver, 38 year-old Mark Duke, who provided two breath samples, which the officer believed to be inconclu-sive, before taking him on to Bishop Auckland Police Station. There, Duke gave a further two samples but there were problems with the machine and he was asked to provide

two more specimens. It was at this point that Duke objected and began to become quite aggressive. In mitigation, the defence stated that Duke, of Cambridge Court, Bishop Auckland, had been fully compliant up until this point but due to the lateness of the hour and the stress of the day (he had earlier been to visit his father in hospital) he had acted in this manner.Duke was disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined a total of £215.

Dr Saralyn Mark, a renowned leader in women’s health, has recently visited King James I Academy to inspire Year 7 students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Sixth Form Science students also enjoyed the unique op-portunity to listen to, and question the distinguished visitor.Dr Mark, who is based in Washington DC, has enjoyed a celebrated career as an Endocrinologist, Geri-atrician and specialist in women’s health, and her work has even included acting as an advisor to the space agency, NASA. She visited only two schools in

the area, King James and St. Bede’s in Peterlee, so King James were delighted when Mrs Lee, Assistant Director of Learning for Science was able to arrange this memorable experience for students.Students were fascinated as Dr Mark spoke of her passion for space: “As children, we were enthralled by the space programme,” she said. “We were able to see our astronauts walk on the moon and it fired our imaginations. I dreamed of being a doctor on the moon.”Now, as ambassador for the Durham Netpark, president

of SolaMed Solutions, worldwide Medical and Scientific Policy Advisor and Teacher, she may not have realised her childhood ambition but her achieve-ments are certainly inspi-rational.During the event, Year 7s followed in the footsteps of many astronaut crews by taking part in a competi-tion to design their own ‘mission patch’ – a tradition still upheld by astronauts who work alongside a graphic designer to design a bespoke patch for their suit. The winner, judged by Dr Mark, was Kyle White who received a trophy for his design.

Customers donate enough food to provide 2,000 mealsThe Million Meal Appeal has broken records, thanks to generous donations from Bishop Auckland residents. Across Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October, customers at Sainsbury’s Bishop Auckland donated enough food to provide 1000 meals to help feed vulnerable people affected by food poverty in the UK.Sainsbury’s has also once again matched every meal donated by customers, so in total 2,000 meals have been donated at Bishop Auckland. The Million Meal Appeal

Police in Darlington are investigating a road rage incident which occurred last Sunday, 21st October. At around 3.20pm a man was in his car, a black Vauxhall Insignia, on the A1 roundabout at Burtree when a small white van, possibly a Vauxhall, cut him up. The Insignia driver sounded his horn at which point the van gave chase towards Redworth. When the Insignia driver stopped at temporary traffic lights at Redworth, the van driver got out of

his vehicle carrying a tyre iron and threatened the other driver. He had to drive through red lights to get away. The van followed through the red lights, chasing the car until the Watling Road roundabout at Bishop Auckland before turning off up Watling Road. The van driver was described as being in his mid-20s around 5ft 9in tall, of medium build with short dark hair. He was wearing a black t-shirt and black carpenter style trousers and spoke with a local

is run with Sainsbury’s charity partner FareShare, a national charity dedicated to tackling hunger and food waste. The first Million Meal Appeal was held in 2011 with 600 stores participat-ing. Thanks to customers’ generosity and Sainsbury’s pledge to match meals, 1.2 million meals were donated to FareShare. Due to its success, this year’s appeal was run in over 900 stores. Bishop Auckland were involved in both appeals and a massive two million meals have been donated in total this year,

which includes matching from Sainsbury’s - that’s double the original target of 1 million meals.Sainsbury’s Head of Community Affairs, Andy White said, “Our customers have been telling us that they like giving in this way and it’s really apparent by their generosity despite difficult times. We’re delighted to match all the meals donated by our customers and it means that together we’re helping to provide two million meals to vulnerable members of our communi-ties that need it the most.”
