Overview

Left Side Buttons

• Top button: Zoom Out.

Zoom Out increases the scale of the map.

• Second button: Zoom In.

Zoom In decreases the scale of the map.

• Bottom button: Find.

Find allows a search for waypoints or features.

Right Side Buttons

• Top button: Page select.

Selects between 5 main pages.

• Second button, press and hold: Power On/Off.

The Power button also turns the screen backlight on and off while the unit is powered up.

ClickStick

• The ClickStick is a joystick control that allows the user to toggle up, down, left and right through the GPS display.

• The ClickStick can also be pressed to select the item highlighted.

Batteries

• Uses 2 AA batteries.• Battery case opens

with ¼ turn counter-clockwise.

• Follow picture inside battery case.

• Battery strength is displayed on bottom of Main Menu page.

Power Up

• Press and hold the Power button until the LCD screen shows the eTrex name at the top.

• Press the Page button three times to scroll through the copyright and warning pages.

• The Satellite page will appear on the screen.

Pages

The five main pages are:

1. Satellite

2. Map

3. Navigation

4. Trip Computer

5. Main Menu

Each page has a drop-down menu in the upper right corner, next to Page menu.

Toggling Between Pages

• Use Page button to go through the pages.

OR

• Use the ClickStick to select the upper right box on the display, then push the ClickStick. This displays a drop-down menu of the five main pages. Select the desired page and push the ClickStick.

Satellite Page

• “Wait… Tracking Satellites” will read out at the top of the page.

• Circles will darken in the readout as satellites are acquired.

• “Ready To Navigate,” Location and Elevation will appear when position is established.

Map Page

• Maps location and nearby waypoints and features.

• Displays your movement.

• Shows moving pointer and selected data points while navigating.

Navigation Page

• Displays a vector, time and distance to selected destination.

• Displays selected data points at the bottom of the screen.

• Data points can be changed by selecting and pushing ClickStick.

Trip Computer Page

• Displays distance, time and speed traveled.

• Data points can be changed by selecting and toggling with ClickStick.

Main Menu Page

• Allows the user to select and change features.

• Displays battery strength, time, date and backlight status.

Setting Time Zone

• The GPS signal sets the time and date on the Legend unit automatically, but the time zone may need to be changed.

• From the Main Menu page, use the ClickStick to select SetUp, then Time, then Time Zone.

• Select the local time zone from the drop-down menu and press the ClickStick.

• Moscow is the local time zone: GMT +3.

Waypoints

• Legend memory will hold 500.

• Two ways to save a waypoint:

1. Press and hold ClickStick.

2. From Main Menu page, select Mark.

• The symbol and name displayed on the flag can be changed with the ClickStick.

• The grid reference or Lat/Long can also be changed with the ClickStick.

Creating A Route

• 20 routes can be saved.

• Saved waypoints are used to build a route to a particular destination.

• From the Main Menu page, select Routes.

• “New” is highlighted at the bottom of the screen. Press the ClickStick.

• A dotted line is highlighted. Press the ClickStick to enter the first waypoint.

highlighted. Press the ClickStick. Select Nearest or By Name as desired to find the first waypoint.

• To select waypoints by name, enter the alpha-numeric name of the waypoint, then select OK.

• The selected waypoint will appear on the route screen and another dotted line is available for the next waypoint.

• To delete an entered waypoint, select it and toggle to the drop down menu. Select and click Remove.

• When all needed waypoints are entered for the route, toggle to the upper right corner “X” and press the ClickStick.

• The Route page will show the waypoints in order and the name will be auto-filled as:

(first waypoint) – (last waypoint)

• The route name can be changed by selecting it and using the drop-down menu.

• When all information desired has been entered into the route, close the page by selecting the “X” in the upper right corner.

Navigating A Route

• To navigate a saved route, select that route from the route list and select Navigate at the bottom of the route page.

• The Navigation page will be displayed. This will show the time to the next waypoint at current speed, distance to next waypoint, arrow direct to next waypoint, current speed and heading.

• The Satellite, Map, Trip Computer and Main Menu pages can also be used while navigating a route.

• An arrow appears on the Map page to display current position and direction of travel.

• A dark straight line will be displayed on the map to indicate the direct path from current location to next waypoint.

• As each waypoint is reached, the next waypoint on the route is displayed with distance and heading.

• To navigate from the last waypoint back to the first, open the desired route and click the drop-down menu. Select and click Reverse Route then Navigate.

Tracks

• The Legend tracks the movement of the unit while it is powered up, and displays this movement on the map as a line, or track.

• 10 tracks can be saved to memory.

• To clear the Track Log so that only the track about to be traveled is in the Legend memory, go to the Trip Computer page and open the drop-down menu. Select Reset, toggle down to Clear Track Log and press the ClickStick. Toggle down to Apply and press the ClickStick. Select and press Yes.

• While traveling, the Legend will indicate the path taken with a line on the map display. At any time this path can be saved by selecting Tracks from the Main Menu page. Select Save and indicate how far back you wish to save.

• The Tracks page will now show a saved track. The name of that track can be changed to reflect the destination.

TrackBack

• Just as with the Reverse Route feature, a saved track can be reversed by selecting TrackBack at the bottom of the track page.

• The pointer on the map will follow the track from the destination back to the start point.

Latitude and Longitude

Lat/Long Continued

• Latitude is an indication of a point’s angular distance north or south of the Equator.

• Longitude is an indication of a point’s angular distance east or west of the Prime Meridian.

• Lat/Long is expressed in degrees, minutes and seconds.

• Lat/Long references can be found along the edges of a map page.

• The black hash marks indicate Lat/Long divisions.

• What familiar navigation point can be found at this location:

Military Grid Reference System

MGRS Continued

• Grids are expressed as:

• The first three digits are the Grid Zone Designator.

• The next two letters are the Grid Square.

• The next ten digits are the specific point.

Grid Zone Designator

• 38S is the grid zone designator for north- eastern Iraq.

Grid Square

• Within each grid zone are 100km grid squares designated by two letters.

• ME is the grid square for Kirkuk

• MF is the grid square for Irbil.

• The blue divisions on the map display grids.

• 38S MF 1161401753 is the grid for the intersection of Hwy 2 and 100 Meter Road in Irbil.

• First 5 digits: UP• Next 5 digits: Right

Converting Lat/Long to MGRS

• To convert one type of position indicator to the other, go to the Main Menu page and select Units. Toggle down to Position Format and select it.

• Lat/Long is shown in the drop-down menu as hddd°mm’ss.s”. Change MGRS to hddd°mm’ss.s” to find the Lat/Long of a grid, and vice versa.
