MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Chromebook Update
We now have had our Chromebooks for five months and they have become
an integral part of teaching and learning at Garfield. Every day I see
students using them to research information, create presentations, and
engage in interactive, web-based learning activities. However, just like
any piece of technology, it is important to remember the basic expectations
to ensure they are a valuable academic tool.
1. Keep Chromebook in carrying case at all times and place all
items in outside zipper pocket.
2. Charge Chromebook nightly so the battery will last the entire
day. Use charging stations in cafeteria before school if battery is
low.
3. Carry earbuds in outer pocket each day so they will be available
for use in school.
4. Report any damaged or lost Chromebooks to the LRC to aid in
faster repair/return.
5. Utilize Chromebook for learning purposes only when in school.
Chromebook use for entertainment purposes should only be done
at home after school work is completed.
6. Appreciate the learning opportunity that the Lakewood Middle
School students have that is provided by the school district and
from the support of the Lakewood community.
The Chromebook initiative truly is a unique learning experience. Through
much hard work from our teachers and technology department, students’
learning opportunities have grown exponentially. Thank you to all of the
parents, students, teachers, LRC staff, and technology specialists who are
supporting a new way of teaching and a broader way to learn.

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT:
I wanted to share with you some news that I reported to the Board at its January 19 meeting. With most all the
estimated costs in hand for our final phase of construction, the District finds itself with a cost overrun of 6% or about
$6 million. The District plans to cover the budget gap through a proposed agreement with the Ohio Facilities
Construction Commission (OFCC).
A combination of factors are behind the overrun, and are beyond the control of the District. The factors include
construction costs that have spiked beyond projected inflation rates, higher than anticipated transition site costs, costs
associated with historical preservation, unexpected issues with unsuitable soil at all sites, and a higher cost of
environmental remediation at two of the sites.
The District has a plan to cover the overruns by asking the OFCC for additional funds at its April meeting. The District
is required to cover 69% of the overrun through money that exists outside of its general fund in various accounts, such
as permanent improvement funds, McKinley property agreement funds, prior and current construction funds, food
service funds, donations and interest earnings. The state will provide its 31% of the funding if needed at the end of the
project.
There is a possibility the District will not need to dip into these funds to close the cost gap. If at the end of the project
money remains in the contingency fund required by the state, then that money will go toward making up the cost
difference.
Despite the budget challenge, the good news is that the buildings are still scheduled to be completed according to the
original timetable with the elementary schools opening in August 2016 and the high school wings ready for use in
August 2017.

Superintendent Chat
On Wednesday, Feb. 17, Superintendent Jeff Patterson will hold his third Superintendent Chat of the school year. The
chat will take place at 6 pm in the Garfield Middle School cafetorium. At this chat, Superintendent would like to
begin the discussion of what the future use of Taft, Franklin and the Board of Education building should be. No
reservations are needed, just show up with your questions and comments! Hope to see you there.
Standardized Testing Schedule This year the mandatory state testing has been drastically reduced and will be administered during one time
frame only. This testing timeframe is very similar to those we have had in the past and minimizes lost
instructional time.

Dear Garfield Families,
Thank you for your outstanding level of support in January. Support has been great for PTSA concessions for
Garfield Athletics. Thank you very much. Go Garfield!!
PTSA will have the Third Quarter Dance and Activity Night on Friday, March 11, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Students are encouraged to wear green and or St. Patrick’s Day attire. PTSA is in need of donations of can pop, bottled
water, individually wrapped baked goods and snack bags. Send these to the office from March 8-11 labeled “Dance.”
If you’d like to help setting up, or chaperoning, please let us know. Email us at [email protected]
PTSA and LCAC are also teaming up to provide students a charity opportunity for this dance. Students may donate a
new toothbrush and tooth paste and bring it to the dance and in return students will receive 2 food item tickets for the
dance.
New for this year, 8th grade PTSA student members and parents are welcome to work the concession stand at the
basketball games. This opportunity will be given to students to help subsidize the 8th grade Washington D.C. Trip in
May. Check the Garfield Athletics schedule online or in the gym hallway to pick the game you would like to have.
Email the concession coordinator at [email protected] to get your confirmation and more specific
details. There is a three (3) student / one (1) parent limit for each game, with a total of four (4) people per game.
Student and or parent must arrive by 4:15 to set up concession and then close the stand at 6:30 p.m.
Keep posted on the latest news on Facebook at Garfield Middle School.
Have a wonderful winter,
Regina S. Westlake, PTSA President
H2O News
Garfield H2O volunteers have been busy this year making items to contribute to local community events such as
Spooky Pooch Parade, the LCAC Holiday Food Deliveries, Light up Lakewood and the LCSC monthly grocery
deliveries to senior citizens. With each project and its explanation come an awareness of the ways we can build
community in Lakewood and a deeper understanding of our neighbors.
There is no deadline for joining H2O. All Garfield students are invited to begin attending meetings as their schedule
allows. They will receive registration paperwork at the first meeting they attend. Please complete and sign the forms
and return them to us at the next meeting. H2O meets in the cafeteria directly after school and we wrap up at 4:30pm.
Students can walk home at that time or meet parents in front of the school building. If a student needs to leave before
4:30, please send a note or email to let us know.
Join us for service projects, fun and games on the following Fridays:

Español Febrero 2016 Hace mucho frío y está congelado! Hola padres, SP 1 kids are learning stem changing verbs and weather. Stem verbs can be challenging and require repeated visits to lessons, notes, web sites etc., that help drill, quiz and master the 4 different types of stem changes that occur. We are also learning weather vocabulary and the four seasons. Your child will be able to able to tell you the weather in Spanish for any given day of the year, just ask him/her. A major assessment is a weather presentations using Google slides and presenting the weather before the class with no notes. Icons and images are welcome on the slides but no words can be used. Ask kids about their pretentions in class regarding weather. Please recall that SP 1 is a yearlong class that has a cumulative final exam towards the end of May. With the Washington trip occurring in later May, there will be a few days when students will not have class and therefore will not be practicing, hearing, saying or drilling with Sp. I encourage students to review older material, quizzes, tests, presentations, and past assignments that will help them prepare for the final test. Websites that are helpful: quia.com, spanishspanish.com, studyspanish.com, conjuguemos.com, duolingo.com, classzone.com, etc.
