GardenShop brings you the beloved of all seasons, autumn.

As with all new years, come new ideas and gardening is no exception. 2013 will see an increase in community gardening with inspiring trends to create beautiful spaces in urban areas. Whether it be one to twenty square metres, community gardens are making their mark. And, where recycling is becoming an addictive and very necessary pastime, so too is recycled art in the garden. That broken porcelain cistern is ideally suited to planting up with kitchen herbs and placing near the kitchen for easy access.

Autumn brings you an array of exciting vegetable seeds to be sown - look out for the new season’s seed making their way into our garden centres. An ideal time to plant bulbs, they too, will make their spectacular entrance at GardenShop. Roses are perfectly suited for planting in the autumn - look out for the many new varieties now available.

GardeningDesign Trends

The Room Outside

The concept of the Room Outside has never gone away. 2013 will see this concept strengthen even further as people can no longer afford to move, and find innovative ways to create the ‘outdoor kitchen’ the ‘office outside’ and the ‘home playground’. Use of space in the garden for traditionally indoor pursuits will be explored to the max.

Community Gardening in Urban Areas

Join the worldwide trend in joining forces with your neighbours and community to create beautiful spaces in public spaces. These are both to grow food and to create beautiful spaces. Hats off to suburb gardeners who grab any opportunity to use their verges to create interesting and creative gardens extending their love of garden pleasure to everyone who passes by. GardenShop recently launched its annual Great Pavement Competition and this is a platform where community gardening is recognised.

Recycled Garden Art

Difficult times are always productive for art. People find new ways and forms of expression. This is an area where we are increasingly seeing beautiful and original art pieces more often made from recycling of other re-purposed objects. Look for metal, stone and wood recycled objects blending into their own surroundings. Whilst these used to be considered the domain of eccentricity or non-mainstream enthusiasts, recycled art is set to become the buzz word with collectors and garden designers alike in 2013.

Second place was awarded to Sue Olswang from

Westdene whose pavement labour of love was full of

great beauty and charm.

Taryn Gill from Greenside took first place with her Greenside community pavement. Taryn’s entry is a wonderful and exciting example of how a small piece of pavement can benefit so many people.

FLOWERS• Remove summer annuals that are faded and replace with Pansies,

Primulas, Stocks, Calendula’s and Petunias for lovely winter colour.• Sow hardy flower seeds like Primulas, Sweet Peas, Stocks,

Namaqualand Daisies, Delphiniums, Gazania and Iceland Poppies.• Continue spraying your roses with an organic insecticide on a

fortnightly basis to prevent both fungal and disease attacks.• Continue to prune your roses lightly, remove dead and diseased

wood at the same time. This will encourage flowering until winter.

BULBS• When the ground has cooled down it will be time to plant spring

flowering bulbs Hyacinths, Daffodils, Ixias, Sparaxis, Anemones, Ranunculus, Waterblommetjies and Leucojums.

• Indoor bulbs such as prepared Hyacinths can also be planted now.

LAWNS• An ideal time to create a new

lawn using seed or instant grass.• Continue fertilising your lawn with

Vitaliser Lawn and Leaf, Vita-Lawn 5:1:5 or Neutrog’s Blade Runner.

PONDS• Continue to feed pond fish.• Check filters on pumps to ensure

that they are not blocked.• Remove any plant material that has fallen into the pond to prevent

the build up of disease.• Install a net to prevent leaves falling in to it.

Autumn Garden Notes

VEGETABLES, HERBS and FRUIT• Plant fruit bearing berry bushes/vines like strawberries, raspberries,

blueberries and blackberries.• Plant vegetable seedlings like Cabbage, Spinach, Beetroot, Cauliflower

and leafy greens like Pak Choi, Tat Soi, Mizuna and Chinese Cabbage. • Sow vegetable seeds like Broad beans, Broccoli, Beetroot, Swiss

Chard, Carrot, Cabbage and Leeks.• Plant winter culinary herbs like Thyme, Oreganum, Chervil, Parsley and

Sage.• Cut and dry herbs for use in the winter.• Citrus trees can be fed with 2kg of Rose Food and 75g of Magnesium

Sulphate (Epson Salts).• Continue to take precautions against slugs and snails.

Conditions are just perfect for dividing, planting, fertilising and trimming. Here are some great tips to keep you busy and to help get your hands dirty this coming autumn

GENERAL TASKS• Start feeding the birds – hang up some feeders with a variety of seeds and suet balls to attract different birds to

your garden.• Clear up any fallen leaves and other dead plant material to prevent diseases over wintering. • Plant new shrubs and trees to ensure a good start in spring as roots will have time to establish through the winter

months.• Divide and split perennials and groundcovers like Agapanthus, Dietes, Red-Hot Pokers, ornamental grasses, Day

Lilies, Alstromerias and Asters.• Transplant plants that are in the wrong positions in autumn so that they have time to settle in during the winter

months.• Prune back and clean out hedges.• Mulch your beds with lawn clippings, fallen leaves and bark chips to prevent loss of moisture.• Start your own compost heap.• Or alternatively start your own wormery - to create the best garden compost you will ever lay your hands on. It is

easy and effectively takes care of your organic kitchen waste like vegetable and fruit peelings, stale bread, coffee grindings, tea bags, leftover cooked rice and pasta.

Rooting for Roses Autumn is the ideal time to plant new roses to allow them to settle in during winter. Don’t plant a rose in soil where an old rose has grown – it will get “rose sickness”. Replace the old soil to a depth and width of at least 60cm with new soil.

See our selection at your local GardenShop store.
