Course Description: Learn about designing gardens with highly acclaimed British designer, Annie Guilfoyle. This carefully crafted course will guide you through each stage of the design process, beginning with the fundamentals of surveying and site analysis. Followed by essential techniques of how to initiate the design, where to find inspiration, and how to develop a creative concept into a stunning garden. Together with the Chanticleer staff, Annie will focus on ways of achieving imaginative ideas for hardscaping, along with how to perfect dazzling planting combinations and realize innovative designs for original furniture and sculpture. This course is ideally suited to students of garden and landscape design and people working in the garden industry, or for those who simply want to redesign their own garden capturing the essence of Chanticleer under Annie’s guidance. The course includes practical studio sessions, lectures and demonstrations, garden walks, and critical analysis. Annie will be including up-to-date information and inspiration about what is happening on the UK garden scene. Course topics

• Design principles, critical analysis and what makes a successful garden • Drawing the garden design including plans, elevations, and graphics • Surveying and site analysis of a garden • Design inspiration and conceptual design • Functional layout plans and how to initiate a design • Hard landscaping materials and construction techniques • Garden design exercises, studio sessions and workshops • Planting principles, designing with plants and creating planting plans • Sourcing, buying and setting out plants • Sketching and observing the garden • Rendering techniques for garden plans and drawings

List of essential equipment for students to bring: A scaled measured survey of your garden - this survey needs to be drawn or printed on paper at an appropriate correct scale The survey must be accompanied by photos of your site (either digital or print versions) Your design brief for the garden (optional) A sample of garden soil for testing Mechanical pencil Eraser A pad of tracing paper *size must be large enough to fit the garden onto – each student will need to check the size of their survey Circle guide Scale ruler Set square Compass Computer – laptop and camera Notebook and sketchbook Masking tape Drawing Pens Scissors Glue stick Coloured pencils Pencils for sketching

Useful items to bring in addition:

Any inspirational books or images Any drawing equipment, or paints, etc. Garden magazines for cutting up to make mood board

Detailed Course Overview Thurs July 26 5 - 6pm Student arrival & registration. Check in with the front desk upon arrival.

Dinner Reception, local fare with gluten free and vegan options. 6 – 7:30pm Introductory lecture with Annie showing her work, introducing the course and describing what will happen over

the next four days. Day one Friday July 27

Session 1 9-10am Group discussion

Students introduce themselves and talk about what they would like to achieve on this course – as a group we will look at the individual projects in turn, so each student can describe their own garden and design objectives. This is a good way of everyone seeing each other’s projects; we will do the same at the end of the course.

Session 2 10:20-1:00pm Lecture/Workshop

The principles of good design followed by a lecture on site survey and site analysis – to ensure that everyone understands the importance of having an accurate survey and a full understanding of their own site. Students will be asked to revaluate their own design brief – students can test their soil samples.

Session 3 2-3pm Garden Lecture

David Mattern will review the evolution of the Vegetable Garden and will demonstrate seed sowing. David will discuss how he creates a productive garden, balancing seasonal interest, how he plans the garden, and what the priorities are for summer work.

Session 4 3-4 Garden Lecture 4-5pm Exercise/Workshop 5- 5:30 Group discussion

Lisa Roper will discuss how she uses form and texture in the Gravel Garden and the process of “editing” plants that detract from the design. Lisa will demonstrate how she uses photography in the design process. Sketching exercise - students spend half an hour out in the garden drawing an area that has a particular appeal for them followed by a round up session in the studio, looking at each other’s findings and discussing the garden with the group.

Day two Sat July 28

Session 1 9-10am Lecture

Lecture on how to begin the design process, students will learn about using various techniques such making a mood board, working with a design concept, using a functional layout plan and the grid method to explore the design layout before progressing onto the design.

Session 2 10:20am-1pm Workshop

Practical session – students will produce a mood board and begin a functional layout plan for their own garden.

Session 3 2-3:30pm Exercise/Workshop

Students spend some time in the garden with Annie looking at examples of how the design principles are used to great effect at Chanticleer then return to the studio to continue working on their own plans.

Session 4 4-5:30pm Workshop

Students continue to develop a functional layout plan into a design layout/master plan for their garden

Day three Sun July 29

Session 1 9-10am Lecture

Annie will introduce the principles of good planting design

Session 2 10:20am-1pm Lecture/Workshop

Annie will show how to design a planting plan then students will work on their individual designs under the supervision of Annie

Session 3 2-3:30pm Workshop

Students continue working on their designs under Annie’s supervision

Session 4 4-5:30pm Lecture

Lecture looking at the use of hard landscape materials and garden features Annie will check on everyone’s progress before the end of the day

Day four Mon July 30

Session 1 9-10:30am Garden Lecture

Dan Benarcik will give a tour of the wood shop and discuss how he crafts benches, containers, and plant list boxes to add artistry to the garden. He will also walk us through the Teacup garden to demonstrate how he uses scale and color in designing with containers.

Session 2 10:30am-12:00pm Garden Lecture

Joe Henderson will demonstrate how to use plugs in the garden to achieve a naturalistic effect that is aesthetically pleasing and mimics natural ecosystems. Joe will review the metalworking and functional artwork in the gardens. This session will focus on the Pond Gardens and Rock Ledge, as well as examples of Joe’s craftsmanship throughout the garden. Lunch will be served from 12-1pm

Session 3 1-3pm Workshop

Students will resume work in the classroom on a planting plan for area in their gardens under Annie’s supervision.

Session 4 3-5.30pm Final presentation

Students present to each other the work that they have done this week – end of the course.
