OUR EXCESS CAN MEAN L I F E F O R A N OT H E R
We believe our excess can mean life for another, and can con-
tribute to ending cycles of extreme poverty for many, essen-
tially, it’s SELL. GIVE. HELP.
• Take back your closets, your garages, clean out your
self-storage units, which then saves you money, and SELL it.
Throw a party in your neighborhood, tell them you’re selling
your excess stuff so others can be lifted out of poverty.
• GIVE the proceeds from the sale to Help One Now and use
it to support the country and project that you choose in Haiti,
Peru, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Uganda, or South Africa.
• HELP One Child with an education by supporting teachers,
HELP One Leader by providing a micro-loan to support their
family business or HELP One Community with a water well, a
safe home or a special project.
And those are just some of the examples you can choose!
ABOUT GS4O
Want to read about a community who ran successful Garage sales in the past? Visit: www.helponenow.org/garage-sale-for-orphans
First share the vision with your community, and pick a proj-
ect that you want to support in Haiti, Peru, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia,
Uganda, or South Africa! It’s a good idea at this meeting to have
people start gathering their stuff.

4 WEEK BREAKDOWN
4 WEEKS BEFORE
(Organize Your Group & Share the Story)
1. If you’ve not already done so, start recruiting Garage Sale donors & volunteers.
2. Begin organizing your group and collecting donations through coworkers, Neighborhood
associations, friends, etc. Find a place to store items before the sale.
3. Consider creating a Facebook page (and share it on Twitter and Instagram) where
you can post a link to your project, share the story of what you are doing and invite others
to join you. You can also use it to update people who are helping you.
4. Continue educating your family, group and/or organization about the country & project
that you will be raising funds for. Share the story with dignity & hope.
3 WEEKS BEFORE
(Make a Plan for the Day of the Garage Sale)
1. Meet with your group and come up with a plan to
build relationships in your neighborhood. You will have
lots of people in your front yard and driveway, don’t waste
this chance to meet some of them.
•It’s generally best to let the garage sale host have
NO official duties the morning of the garage sale so they
can meet their neighbors (hey, they’ve likely done a lot
already!) Use other volunteers to price things, exchange
money, cook, handle the raffle, all that good stuff.
•A great idea is to have a backyard party planned the
following week that you can invite your neighbors to. Go
ahead, build some community while you’re doing some
good!
2. Plan to have a table or small area designated to
sharing about Garage Sale for Orphans & Help One Now.
3. Assign roles to people in your group & give them
ownership. Some examples include: someone to make
signs for your sale, someone to update on Facebook,
Instagram & Twitter, someone to do the cooking, etc.
4. Are you going to price items ahead of time or do
it on the fly? We advise at least pricing the higher end
stuff ahead of time, and placing items together either by
category or price level. The more ‘on the fly’ pricing you
do the more likely you are to always say a super low price.
5. Determine what things you will need to host a great
sale: Tables, chairs, tape, price stickers, hangers, clothesline
to hang clothes on, etc. Make plans to borrow stuff if you
need to.
6. Nail down your beginning and end time so your
volunteers know when to show up.
7. Plan to provide snacks and water (bonus if you have
coffee!) for your volunteers.
8. Make a plan for what to do with leftover items. Are
you going to cut the price heavy near the end of the sale?
Donate it to Salvation Army or Goodwill? Or hold onto it
for your next Garage Sale for Orphans!
9. Continue sharing the vision & encouraging people
to go through their attics, closets, garages and storage
facilities to find things to donate to the sale.
10. Continue educating your family, group and/or
organization about the country & project that you will be
raising funds for. Share the story with dignity & hope.
11. Start to market & promote! Here are some great
free sites:
o www.Yardsalesearch.com
o www.garagesalestracker.com
o yardsales.net
o www.craigstlist.com
o Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter
Also, if your host home is within a Homeowner’s
Association, has a Google Group, etc...let them know what
you are doing. This gives them a chance to partner with
you.
2 WEEKS BEFORE
(Advertise & Rally the Troops)
1. Promote, promote, promote!
2. Continue sharing the vision & encouraging people to go through their attics, closets, garages and storage facilities to find things to donate to the sale.
3. Continue educating your family, group and/or organization about the country & project that you will be raising funds for. Share the story with dignity & hope.
1 WEEK BEFORE
(Review & Promote)
1. Promote, promote, promote!
2. Assign someone to get a ‘bank’ of money for your sale, somewhere around $80-$100 dollars. The more $1’s you have, the better.
3. Review all the Role Assignments & check in on people. Are you on schedule? Do they need any help?
4. Continue sharing the vision & encouraging people to go through their attics, closets, garages and storage facilities to find things to donate to the sale.
5. Continue educating your family, group and/or organization about the country & project that you will be raising funds for. Share the story with dignity and hope.
GARAGE SALE DAY!
(It’s Time)
1. Get those signs out early and make sure everything is set up properly.
2. Meet with your team of volunteers.
3. Start Selling!!! Meet people and be intentional with each person you engage. Share about Garage Sale for Orphans and the project that you are supporting.
Most Importantly
HAVE FUN!
DONATE AND SHARE THE STORY
AFTER YOUR GARAGE SALE
1. Head over to www.helponenow.org/garage-sale-for-orphans and donate your pro-
ceeds to the project you’ve selected. Thank you so much for being awesome!
2. Share your story on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram with your group. Celebrate!
You’ve just used your excess stuff (that you weren’t likely using anyway) and turned it into
life for someone else.
3. Share your story & tips with us! We would love to hear your story and share it with
others. Lots of people don’t think they can do much to help others, but we really can! And
you can be the one to encourage them to do it. If you would please email us a short story
of your Garage Sale for Orphans experience at [email protected]. Please include any
photos and video from your sale.
• Why did you select the project you did?
• What did you learn about all the stuff you’ve collected over the years?
• What did you learn about hosting a Garage Sale for Orphans that you could share with
others so they could host a great one?
