Marshall has also won seven of its last nine games.lThe biggest reason for the Herd’s turnaround has been the addition of senior forward and Mi-ami transfer James Kelly. The 6-8 native of Ann Arbor, Mich. is averaging 19.9 points and 9.8 re-bounds, shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 78.1 percent from the line.lKelly is second in C-USA in scoring, third in rebounding and steals (1.5 spg), seventh in field goal percentage, eighth in blocked shots (1.1 bpg) and 10th in free throw percentage (.781).lKelly has compiled six double-doubles in nine league games and is averaging 23.8 points and 10.8 rebounds versus C-USA opponents.

lIt was a team effort for Marshall, as Ryan Tay-lor collected a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and three other starters tallied nine points or more. Surprise starter JP Kambola held down the middle with 13 points and nine re-bounds. Freshman guard Aleksa Nikolic added 10 points. lUTEP fell behind 42-39 at the half as the Herd made eight threes in the opening 20 min-utes. Marshall continued to be the aggressor to start the second half, scoring eight of the first 10 points to go up nine (50-41) with 17:27 remain-ing. lIt was a 10-point game (60-50) with a little over 12 minutes left when the Miners made their run. The 16-5 spurt ended with UTEP ahead 66-65 af-ter Omega Harris nailed a three. Harris scored nine of his season-high 18 points during the run. lThe Herd regained the lead on a jumper by Nikolic, but Vince Hunter answered with a layup to put the Miners ahead 68-67 at the 5:15 mark.lUTEP faded after that and was outscored 11-3 down the stretch. Taylor scored the next 10 points for the Herd as it pulled away.lHarris shot 6-for-9 from the field, 2-for-3 from outside and 4-for-4 from the line to lead UTEP. The rest of the team was 6-for-15 from the charity stripe.

LAST GAMELA TECH 78, UTEP 70lDominic Artis came one assist shy of regis-tering only the second triple-double in school his-tory, but UTEP came up just short at LA Tech on Sunday, 78-70.lArtis finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and four steals. lUTEP fought gamely, but committed a season-high 23 turnovers – leading to 19 points for the Bulldogs – and couldn’t get the stops on defense necessary down the stretch. LA Tech also went 11-for-15 at the charity stripe in the second half.lThe Miners led 33-32 at the half, fell behind by nine points in the second half, then closed to within four twice in the final two and a half min-

utes. After Hooper Vint – who battled foul trou-ble – scored to make it 68-64 with 2:18 to go, LA Tech’s Erik McCree converted a layup of his own to push the lead back to six. After Artis made two free throws with 1:45 to play, Alex Hamilton scored a layup to extend the lead to six again. Artis split two free throws, then Merrill Holden started a run of four straight points for the Bull-dogs with free throws. That put LA Tech ahead 76-67 with time ticking away.lThe Miners outrebounded only their second league opponent of the season (38-34). They shot 50.9 percent from the field and kept the Bulldogs under 40 percent up until the last few minutes.lThey also did a decent job on Bulldogs stars Hamilton and McCree for 26 minutes before they came alive down the stretch, combining for 19 points over the final 13:27. lLA Tech finished 12-for-27 from three-point range with Jacobi Boykins (5-for-7) and Dayon Griffin (4-for-9) combining to go 9-for-16. The Bulldogs were 7-for-18 from outside in the first half. That, coupled with the Miners coughing up the ball 15 times, kept the Bulldogs in it despite shooting 30 percent and getting outrebounded 23-14 over the opening 20 minutes.lAll five starters scored in double figures for LA Tech with Boykins (18 points) leading the way. Griffin added 16, Hamilton and McCree 14 each, and Holden 12. McCree grabbed 13 rebounds.lArtis shot 9-for-16 from the field and 4-for-6 from the line. lTerry Winn scored 13 points, while Omega Harris and Earvin Morris added 10 apiece. Har-ris scored the first six points as UTEP marched to a 6-0 lead. The Miners were up by seven (21-14) with eight minutes remaining in the half, but LA Tech went on a 14-4 run to lead 28-25.

NOTING THE MINERSlOmega Harris leads UTEP with a 15.9 ppg scoring average in home games, shooting 51.2 percent from the field and 47.8 percent from three. On the road Harris averages 5.8 ppg, with a .333 field goal percentage and .385 three-point percentage. lLee Moore has an assist/turnover ratio of 46/21 in home games. YEAR SIX UNDER FLOYDlTim Floyd is in his sixth season on the UTEP bench with a career record of 442-254, including 114-74 with the Miners.lFloyd ranks second in school history in victo-ries behind the legendary Don Haskins (719) and has also coached the second-most games of any UTEP coach (188).l Floyd has enjoyed 20 winning seasons in 22 years as a collegiate head coach. His teams have made eight NCAA Tournament appearances and five trips to the NIT.l Floyd previously was the head coach at Idaho (1986-88), New Orleans (1988-94), Iowa State (1994-98) and USC (2005-09). He was also head coach of the Chicago Bulls (1998-2002) and the New Orleans Hornets (2003-04) in the NBA.l Floyd has three former Division I head coaches on his staff in Phil Johnson (San Jose State), Bob Cantu (USC) and Bobby Braswell (Cal State Northridge).

NCAA TITLE TEAM TURNS 50lThe 50th Anniversary of the NCAA Men’s Bas-ketball Championship will be celebrated at the men’s basketball game against Western Ken-tucky on Saturday. The game will be nationally televised on FOX Sports 1 with a tip-off time of 3 p.m. Mountain. lThe significance of Western Kentucky as the opponent for the anniversary game is great, as the Hilltoppers also participated in the 1966 NCAA Tournament and started two African Amer-ican players, including Clem Haskins who was selected third in the 1967 NBA Draft. Haskins and Dwight Smith became the first African-American players to join the WKU basketball pro-gram in the fall of 1963, putting the school at the forefront of integrating college basketball in the South. lThe UTEP-Western Kentucky game is just one of a series of special events in the works to salute the national champs.
