Oklahoma running back Damien Williams scores two weeks ago against Florida A&M. Williams is one of the nation’s leading rushers but it’s unknown if hewill draw the start today against Kansas State.

THE VIEW

Calling greatnessIt’s an exciting day,

clearly. Oklahoma, the nation’s

very unremarkable, sixth-ranked team meets No. 15Kansas State. Anticipationis understandably high.

How good is OU, really? It is excitement fueled by

angst and curiosity. Perhapsnot the most exciting formof excitement, but verybuzzworthy.

But you know whatmight really drive peoplegiddy? An arrival. Of thenext superstar, or the nexttwo or three great Sooners.Future All-Americans whoreally begin provingthemselves today.

It could be anybody. It could be nobody.Consider Landry Jones’

last seven games, 6 1/2 ofwhich have been playedwithout Ryan Broyles.Going back to Texas A&Mlast season through OU’svictory over Florida A&M,Jones has completed 58.7

percent (159 of 271) of hispasses for 1,843 yards, seven touchdowns, seveninterceptions and anefficiency rating of 119.16.

Those numbers weregenerated against a fewgood teams, but no out-standing defenses. And thatefficiency rating is wellshort of Jones’ breakout2010 mark of 146.3.

If the Sooner quarterbackis to make one more run atbeing one of the nation’sbest, today would be a goodday for that run to begin.

Consider DamienWilliams.

He’s averaging 12.95 yardsper each of his 20 carries, but

Oklahoma linebackerCorey Nelson wasn’t sittingon a stool in the corner of aring on Monday, but helooked like a fighter waitingon the opening bell. Thesixth-ranked Sooners’ meet-ing with No. 15 Kansas Statewas still five days away, butjust talking about the gamemade him rock back andforth in anticipation.

“You can feel people get-ting excited more. You canfeel people focusing in morethan what they would usual-ly do out there on the field,”he said. “It’s just a feeling. It’s

just something about it.”At 6:50 p.m. today at Owen

Field, the Big 12 Conferenceopener for both the Soonersand Wildcats has that kind ofanticipation because it offersa mix of validation andredemption for both teams.

In OU’s case, it’s validationthat’s needed.

Despite the 2-0 start, theSooners have fallen two spotssince the preseason pollswere released. A lacklusterperformance in the seasonopener against UTEP leftmany wondering if the Soon-ers were worthy of being theconference’s preseasonfavorite or if they actually

THE BIG STORY: ARE THEY FOR REAL?

Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones throws a pass against Florida A&M twoweeks ago. The challenge should be much more difficult for the Sooners today.

“You’ll also be able tofeel the tension with theplayers on the oppositeside of the 50-yard line. It’s just this gut feelingthat you have. Just as afootball player, playingin games like these, you just have this feel-ing that, ‘Man, this isgoing to be a dogfight.”

Oklahoma playedthings very close tothe vest in its first

two games. Its play sheetwas minuscule on bothsides of theball. Thatwill changeagainstKansasStatetonight.Expect theSooners tohave morewrinklesthan awinterjacket afterfive months in storage onboth sides of the ball.

It will also be a gamewhere certain players areasked to take on biggerroles than the first two

games. Here are five (orsix) that OU will beexpecting more fromtonight:

Casey Walker: Thedefensive tackle missed thefirst two games due to an

undisclosed non-footballissue. Tonight will be hisfirst game of the season.Walker couldn’t come backat better time. The Sooners

n Damien Williams hasgiven OU’s running game ahome run threat it’s lacked, but it’s the quarterback ele-ment that gives KansasState the edge. QuarterbackCollin Klein and runningback John Hulbert will batteraway at the Sooners allnight. When it comes to run-ning the football, theWildcats have no peer in theBig 12 Conference.

n Klein has greatly improvedsince his last last meetingagainst the Sooners. But OUquarterback Landry Joneshas always played wellagainst the Wildcats. Theextra week to prepareshould have helped OU’syoung receivers. It’s JustinBrown and Trey Metoyerwho should show muchprogress from the first twogames.

n OU gets defensive tackleCasey Walker back tonightand the senior’s presencewill help. This is a gameOU’s front seven has to win.It has the experience and tal-ent. Kansas State isn’t farbehind. It’s only allowed 2.9yards per carry through threegames and middle line-backer Arthur Brown is oneof the best in the Big 12.

n There isn’t a team in thetop 10 that has moredoubters than OU. Tonight isa chance to prove its a legiti-mate Big 12 and nationalchampionship contender. It’salso an opportunity to win a20th straight home gameagainst a ranked foes. OU’stypically at its best in bighome games. Tonight’sgame qualfies.

— John Shinn

n OU’s return game hasimproved this season and itscoverage has been solid.Kicker Michael Hunnicuttand punter Tress Way won’ttake backseats to anyonetonight. Kansas State, how-ever, has a proven weaponwith Tyler Lockett. He’s athreat to score any time hehas the ball in his hands.Lockett’s ability is somethingOU can’t match.

n The Sooners’ secondarywill get one of its biggesttests of the season. It mustrun with receivers, but be afactor in the running game.Free safety Tony Jefferson’ssore ankle is something towatch. He’ll be essential inboth areas. OU, however, gets the edge because of itspass rush. It has consistentlypressured quarterbacksthrough two games.

have what it takes to stay inthe national championshiprace. The second gameagainst Florida A&M wasn’tgoing to seize anyone’s atten-tion because it was against anFCS team.

The opportunity to play alegitimate ranked team offersOU a chance to prove it’s forreal.

“This is our first big game, our first real test. Yeah, we’reapproaching it like a Big 12championship game,” offen-sive tackle Lane Johnson said.“We know K-State’s a goodteam. Last year, I think wekind of left them with a badtaste in their mouth. I thinkthey’re going to be hungrywhen they come in.”

When these teams met lastseason, Kansas State (3-0)was clawing its way up thepolls after several seasons out-side of them. They were unde-feated and ready to stake theirclaim as a legitimate Big 12title contender. Then, a weekafter a stunning loss at hometo Texas Tech, OU went toManhattan, Kan., andcrushed the Wildcats, 58-17.

It was a big game last year

and it’s a big game today. The Sooners need to prove

that they are capable of play-ing dominant football againsta quality opponent.

Traditionally, OU has. Under coach Bob Stoops,

the Sooners are 13-0 againstranked teams at Owen Field. All of those wins were by dou-ble digits and six were by 30or more points. Making astatement when the opportu-nity arises is what champi-onship caliber teams do whenopportunity presents.

OU’s got one tonight.

Stoops believes, win orlose, what happens tonightwill tell him more about histeam than either of the firsttwo games.

“To a degree it will,” hesaid.

Stoops is not alone. Therest of the country will bewatching. The Sooners knowthis is a chance to quell theunrest that’s emerged aftertheir first two games.

If the Sooners are a legiti-mate title contender they’llprove it tonight.

As Nelson rocked back

and forth you could tell hecouldn’t wait to get started.

“Yeah, you’ll be able to feelit,” he said. “You’ll also be ableto feel the tension with theplayers on the opposite sideof the 50-yard line. It’s just thisgut feeling that you have.

“Just as a football player, playing in games like these, you just have this feeling that,‘Man, this is going to be adogfight. We’re fixing to getafter it.’”

need the 309-pound senioragainst the Wildcats’ violentrunning game. His impactwon’t come in the form oftackles, but in where theline of scrimmage goes. Ifit’s neutral or movingtoward the backfield, itmeans Walker and theother defensive tackles areplaying well. If they’regetting pushed back intothe linebackers, it meansOU’s going to have a longnight.

Joseph Ibiloye: Thestrong-side linebacker wasused so little in the first twogames that the position’s noteven listed on OU’s depthchart, moved in favor of thenickel back slot. That willchange against the Wildcats.Ibiloye is going to see a lotof action and his ability as anoutside linebacker will betested. Corey Nelson had ahuge game at the spot in lastseason’s meeting againstthe Wildcats. Ibiloye needsto do the same.

Tony Jefferson and JavonHarris: Safeties don’t likeplaying against KansasState. The Wildcats will

pound away until safetiescrowd the line of scrim-mage. Then a receiver willgo running right down themiddle of the field on a play-action pass. OU’s safetiesmust keep everything infront of them. Harris hasplayed well in the first twogames, but last year had apenchant for being tooaggressive. If he reverts,Kansas State will takeadvantage. Jeffersonsuffered an ankle injuryagainst Florida A&M. The

Wildcats will make himprove he’s healthy.

Damien Williams: Therunning back is averaging12.9 yards per carry throughtwo games. He’s shown hecan do some very impres-sive things with the ball inhis hands. The Soonersneed to give it to him morethan 10 times. Williams candemonstrate tonight he’scapable of being the No. 1rushing option.

Landry Jones: Outside ofone interception and

scrambling his way into acouple of sacks, Jones hasplayed well. Tonight is hischance to show he belongson that list of HeismanTrophy contenders with aprime time performance. The Sooners will widen theplaybook tonight. Theopportunity should be therefor Jones to put up bignumbers.

OSU quarterback J.W. Walsh (4) celebrates withrunning back Jeremy Smith after scoring last Saturday against Louisiana-Lafayette.

By Jeff LatzkeAP College Football Writer

STILLWATER — Whenan injury thrust backup quar-terback J.W. Walsh intoaction six plays into Okla-homa State’s last game, coach Mike Gundy got ontohis headset and asked offen-sive coordinator ToddMonken a question: “Whathave we got for him to run?”

“Well, I don’t know,”Monken responded. “Hetook about 10 snaps all week.I don’t know what to tell you.”

The plan Monken con-cocted on the fly proved to beplenty effective, with the Cow-boys setting a school recordwith 742 yards of total offensein a 65-21 win againstLouisiana-Lafayette.

As Oklahoma State (2-1)moves forward with starterWes Lunt’s return uncertain,it won’t be as simple as hav-ing Walsh run the same playscooked up for his injured

teammate. Lunt fits moreclosely into the mold of pre-decessor Brandon Weeden,a drop-back passer who staysin the pocket. Walsh has sim-ilarities to Zac Robinson, theCowboys’ quarterback beforeWeeden, who was as likely totake off running as he was tothrow the ball.

“There’s no question thatyou have to call it different,”Monken said. “You can’t callthe same things. They’re builtdifferently.”

The good news for Okla-homa State is that there’s anextra week to figure it out,and to give Lunt more time torecover. No. 12 Texas (3-0)comes to Stillwater on Sept.29, bringing in a highlyregarded defense that’s allow-ing 328 yards per game —less than half the Bowl Sub-division-best 687 yards OSUis averaging.

“We can’t change reallywhat we do, and I think thebest way to describe it is we

just run our plays and we fithim in to where we think it’sadvantageous for what J.W.brings,” Gundy said.

Monken said that Walshgot only six of the 37 snaps inOklahoma State’s team ses-sion during practice lastWednesday. Lunt gets thelion’s share as the starter, andthere’s even more emphasis

since he’s a freshman whoneeds the work.

But that left little in the wayof preparation for Walsh.

“You just start to check-mark things that we’ve donea lot of, that he’s done abunch of, that wasn’t specifi-cally for a guy like Wes,”Monken said.

Idle: Walsh will have had many more reps if he draws the start against Texas

Terrapins really want this oneBy David GinsburgAP Sports Writer

COLLEGE PARK, Md. —Maryland wide receiverKevin Dorsey has alreadyearned his diploma, receivedthree varsity letters and beento a bowl game.

Here’s something the fifth-year senior hasn’t done: beena part of a victory over WestVirginia, a shortcoming heand the rest of Maryland’supperclassmen hope to recti-fy Saturday against the No. 8Mountaineers in Morgan-town.

“I guess that’s the onlyblemish on my career,”Dorsey said Tuesday. “Itwould be incredible to beat

them, especially my last timebeing there as a player.”

The Terrapins have lost sixstraight to West Virginiasince a 41-7 victory in the2004 Gator Bowl. It’s alsobeen five years since Mary-land defeated a Top 10 team. With an upset win in a hostileenvironment Saturday, theTerps can end both streaks.

“It would be awesome, especially because I’ve got alittle bit of a grudge againstthem after being hurt in Mor-gantown two years ago,” saidsenior left tackle JustinGilbert, who sustained a sea-son-ending knee injury dur-ing a 31-17 defeat in 2010.“Coming out with a W wouldbe huge in our last non-con-

ference game, going into thebye week.”

In a tradition that beganlong ago, when the Terrapinsbeat a Top 10 team a tomb-stone is placed outside thepractice field to mark theachievement. The last tomb-stone was stuck in theground in November 2007,after Maryland upset a MattRyan-led Boston Collegeteam that was ranked eighth.

“We definitely want to tryto add another tombstone tothe gravesite this weekend,”sophomore nose tackle Dar-ius Kilgo said.

Beating West Virginia (2-0) is a tall order. The Terrap-ins are coming off a 24-21home loss against Connecti-

cut and will need to play near-flawless football against aMountaineers squad that hasscored 111 points in its twowins.

“It would be huge,” seniordefensive end A.J. Francissaid. “I’ve never got a tomb-stone before. It would begreat to beat a team we neverbeat, a rival, a team that does-n’t like us and we don’t likethem.”

Maryland’s struggleagainst West Virginiaextends beyond the players.Coach Randy Edsall is 1-7against the Mountaineers, including 1-6 as head coach atUConn, but he hopes theteam can draw encourage-ment from last year’s narrowdefeat.

“He still screwed all thatup, but he made some playsand started running around.Holy cow. Half the time whenhe’s running, I’m yelling athim for what he’s doing, butthat’s just him.”

Coaches have said thatWalsh’s running ability hasbeen hard to evaluatethrough training camp sinceCowboys don’t tackle in prac-tice. What could be a scram-ble for a big gain is blowndead if a defender gets a hand

on Walsh. “It was just a lot of fun to

get out there and do what wewere able to do offensively,”Walsh said. “We were fortu-nate enough to have every-body play the way they didand just do what we do. It was

just a lot of fun. “Having the circumstances

to be able to get out there andrun a little bit, it was a lot offun and I was glad we got todo that.”

Lunt’s leg has been immo-bilized this week to help it

heal faster, leaving more timefor Walsh to run the offenseand prepare.

Gundy doesn’t know yetwhen Lunt will return.

“It doesn’t really matter. No one really cares,”Monken said. “Whoever your

quarterback is, you bettercome up with a plan thatgives you a chance to move itbecause no one cares. Theywant to see you win and getexcited and show up at thegame and stop (complaining)that the sky’s falling.”

John Shinn Corbin Hosler Michael Kinney

he’s done it against UTEP,Florida A&M, and not early, against fresh defenders.

Bob Stoops said it does-n’t matter who OU’s No. 1running back is, a statementhe must know isn’t true, because if Williams can bethe next big thing, heshould start today. And if hehas a superstar future infront of him, he might beginto show it, right from thestart, against a real team likeKansas State.

Consider Tom Wort.A great player and leader

whose time has come?Maybe, but Wort has yet tobe confused with Rocky Cal-mus, Teddy Lehman, RufusAlexander, Curtis Lofton orTravis Lewis.

Through two games, hehas 12 tackles, tied for teambest with Javon Harris. Hehas played well this season. If he can tackle K-State quar-terback Collin Klein six orseven times today, all with-out having to chase him intothe secondary, maybe hebegins taking his placeamong a long line of greatlinebackers.

Kenny Stills? There was the way he fin-

ished last season (20 catch-es, 239 yards, zero TDs infive games after Broyles’ sea-son ended) and the way he’sbegun this one (16 catches,241 yards, two TDs).

Who’s the real Stills? If he’s one of the best,

assuming Jones is accurateenough, there’s no time liketoday to keep it goingagainst a much better foe.

It’s not only about today. After today, OU is off

another week before threeof its next four gamesinclude Texas Tech in Lub-bock, Texas in Dallas andNotre Dame in Norman.

If they’re not superstarstoday, it’s not like the doorslams shut forever.

Still, if this is going to be amemorable season, a fewSooners, whoever they are, need to begin taking flight. And because OU has playedtwo bad teams, and becauseit finished last season sopoorly, there is not oneproven catalyst on the roster.

Not one.Should one (or more)

identify himself today? That would be exciting.
