APJeremy Stewart is the most experienced of Stanfords returning running backs, having rushed for 526 yards and three touchdowns his first three years. He playedsparingly last year because of a high ankle sprain and stress fracture.
I think Iveimproved fromplaying last year, through spring andtraining camp.

The edgeFort Lewis at Montana State
Passing: In a game that will likely be
over early, there will still be plentyo watch, especially on the o ensive
side o the ball. Perhaps no positionso ers more intrigue than quarterbackand wide receiver, where youngstersDenarius McGhee and Tanner Bleskinhave won starting jobs over veterans. At wide receiver, expect Bleskin and as manysix other players to get plenty o reps, which willmake it tougher to get a read on any one o them.
he same cant be said about the quarterbackposition. Expect senior Cody Kempt to get somework, but Rob Ash has called McGhee theunquestioned starter. And as a redshirt reshman,he team could really use a good look at him.
Undoubtedly, McGhee will make some mistakesoday even against a rebuilding Division II team is
historically poor. Dont be surprised i he throws apick either. That perhaps is the most important thingo understand about McGhee heading into Week
One: There is some gunslinger in him. Hes shownit in all camp. That may be something the coachingsta has to manage this year. It will also be veryinteresting to see how McGhees speed matchesup during a live game and how well he takes a hit,
considering he hasnt been tackled in over a year. For Kempt, this is it. I he doesnt clearly trump
McGhee today, his snaps as a college quarterbackmay come to a swi t end. Even though two lessmeaning ul con erence games are coming up, bothcould help MSU to that magic number o seven
Division I wins, which would greatly aidthe Bobcats in their quest or a berth inthe expanded Football ChampionshipSubdivision playo s. And with a possiblewin over an FBS team next week atWashington State important to ans, apossible win over his ormer team (Drake)important to Ash, and a huge con erence
game at the end against Eastern Washingtonat the end o the month, the Bobcats are looking or a
guy that they can rely on not a rotation. Rushing: I you would have said that Cody Kirkwould have been the starter at running back as
all camp began and as it ended, it would havesurprised some but not those who have seenhim work. Kirk has been the most consistentBobcat back all o season. The questions thatstart to creep up as the season begins, however, are how long can he keep it up and who is waitingin the wings to snatch the job i he alters?
Two seasons ago, C.J. Palmer had a very biggame against Adams State, which like Fort Lewis,is a Division II school out o the Rocky MountainAthletic Con erence. With a similar rushing style toPalmer, expect Kirk to shine today. Palmer, who iscurrently listed second on the depth chart, shoulddo the same. But the team needs a change-o -pace back. Thats what Orenzo Davis provides. With his speed, hell present plenty o problems
or the Skyhawks. But the biggest thing to watchwill be i Davis looks as ast and as willing to takehits in a live game as hes looked in practice.Edge: Montana State

Passing: A season ago, the Bobcatswere burned by prolifc passing combi-nations rom lower-tiered teams. In a23-20 squeaker against Dixie State,Judd Thompson ound Nash Fowlerand Kyser Christensen eight timeseach or 280 yards and fnished the
game with 417 yards passing. Inan overtime win over South Dakota,Noah Shepard hit Tom Flanagan seven times
or 120 yards and two touchdowns. Fort Lewishas such a combination in quarterback TimJenkins, who was productive passing the balleven as a true reshman on a 2-9 team aseason ago, and all-everything receiver JustinJohnson, who caught 124 passes last year, including 19 in one game. And make no mis-take, despite the act that little is known aboutFort Lewis, with no tight end or ullback on itsdepth chart, expect this team to air it out.
With that being the case, the de ensivematchup o the day has to be MSU cornerArnold Briggs vs. Johnson. Briggs is com-ing o a year-long layo and ACL surgery. And despite the act that hes technically asixth-year player, being one o MSUs mosttalented de ensive backs each and every oneo those years, hes only started three gamesat corner. Hell have a nice little early-seasontest trying to stick with Johnson.
But ultimately, Jenkins will be thank ul hes
got some ability as a runner becauseMSUs de ensive line will be charging.
Despite the act that the Skyhawkshave some size up ront, they likelywont have the necessary parts todeal with the waves one o the mosttalented and deep de ensive lines
in the Big Sky Con erence will throwat him.Rushing: I Fort Lewis wasnt such a bad
running team, this would also be an interestingarea to watch as Montana States linebackersare entering the season as one o the mostsuspect position groups on the team. But as itturns out, Fort Lewis leading rusher a sea-son ago was its quarterback and its leadingrunning back Sam Apraku, who is the teamsreturning starter this season, had 147 totalrushing yards in 2009. Considering those actsand the big defcits they aced or much o theyear, its no wonder the Skyhawks passed theball twice as much as they ran it.
Even still, the Bobcats need to fnd outabout their linebackers and theyll work a
ew o them today. Its an important step inthe learning process or starting strongsidelinebacker Aleksei Grosulak, a redshirt resh-man, and his primary backup Roger Trammell,a junior college trans er who will see plenty o playing time this year.

OVERALL This Fort Lewis team isnt as good as the AdamsState team Montana State spanked 59-3 back in2008 and this Montana State team is better thanthe 2008 model. It all seems to spell doom or theSkyhawks. The biggest question appears to be howmuch MSU will step on or let o the throttle.
Its never hard to get up or a seasonopener, but it might be a little easierwhen youre coming o a winningseason, you have 18 starters
returning and you were picked tofnish among the nations top 25.It might be a little harder when youhave had only two winning seasonsin the past 26 years, you have a new coachingsta and you were picked to fnish last in your
con erence. As slanted as the battleon this ront may be, its still worthkeeping an eye on. How does McGheelook leading the troops or the frst
time? How will the redshirt reshmenstarters handle their frst mistakes?Does this de ense have the sameswagger it has had in the past? All are
questions that must be answered.Edge: Montana State

62 Analysis by WILL C. HOLDEN o the Chronicle
Kicking & punting: The Bobcatswill gladly welcome punter RoryPerez to the old today. Perez hadone rough day to open all camp,so it will be interesting to see howwell he responds to his frst collegegame. Jason Cunningham is one o he surest bets in the Big Sky this
season, the only question is will heget any chances today? The Skyhawks havea new punter and kicker. That kicker, RichardRodriguez, beat out incumbent Nate Soucie, who was 7-o -10 on feld goals last year butonly attempted one longer than 40 yards.
Returns & coverage: MSU enterstodays game still searching orsomeone who can feld punts. It wontbe DeSean Thomas, considering hessuspended or Week One. ExpectJulius Lloyd, who was working at theposition late in all camp, to be theguy. And i he has a solid day, hemay solidi y himsel back there in the
place o Thomas, who was still rather incon-sistent in the all. Johnson may end up beingthe Skyhawks punt returner, considering lastyears returner graduated.
