The new millennium brought a new event – women’s water polo – to the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. In Sydney, nearly 17,000 fans watched thegold medal match between the United States and hostAustralia.

InitsfirstyearasanOlympicsport,women’swaterpoloincluded six countries that each roundedup their top11playerstocompete.InawildchampionshipmatchbetweenAustraliaandTeamUSA,Australiascoredacontroversiallast-second goal to win 4-3, and send the United Stateshomewiththesilvermedal.

In 2000, then-current Bruins Coralie Simmons andRobinBeauregard,formerBruinstandoutNicollePayneandformerheadcoachGuyBakerhelpedleadTeamUSAonitsquest to the gold medal. While competing at UCLA, bothSImmonsandBeauregardspenttheyearawayfromUCLA.SimmonsledTeamUSAwithninegoalsintheOlympics,andBeauregardfinishedthetournamentwithsixgoals.

UCLAwasthemostrepresenteduniversityinthe2000Olympic Games. In all, 58 Olympians from UCLA (currentandformerBruins)competedfortheUnitedStatesandsixforeigncountries.Student-athletesfromUCLAfinishedthesummer with 18 medals – eight gold, five silver, and five bronze.

UCLA AND TEAM USA

Bruin National Team Experience UCLA women’s water polo players have been wellrepresentedontheU.S.JuniorandSeniorNationalTeams.Both teams have had recent success in internationalcompetition. Most recently, current UCLA junior TanyaGandycompetedasamemberoftheU.S.JuniorNationalTeamin2006and2007. Inthesummerof2007,GandyandTeamUSAfinishedfourthattheFINAWomen’sJuniorWorldChampionshipsinPorto,Portugal.Gandyscored19goalsinsevengames. The Senior National Team won the Holiday Cup inDecember2006.FormerBruinsNatalieGoldaandJamieHipp and then-current Bruin Emily Feher competed inthe Senior National Team event. Natalie Golda scored inevery one of six games for Team USA, while Jamie Hippcontributed21saves.TeamUSAhadalsowonthe2006FINAWorldChampionshipsinItaly. At the 2006 Pythia Cup in Greec, Gandyand current Bruin goalkeeper Brittany Fullencompeted for the U.S. Junior National Team.GandyregisteredeightgoalsandFullen totaled14savesinthecageoverthreegames,leadingTeamUSAtothesilvermedal. UCLA players have been key members of the SeniorNationalTeaminpreviousyears.Eachplayerhascontributedto Team USA’s international success. At the 2003 FINAWorldChampionships,RobinBeauregardscoredthegame-winninggoalinTeamUSA’s8-6victoryoverItalyinthetitlegame.ThevictoryoverItalygavetheU.S.women’swaterpoloteamitsfirstever-goldmedal. Following the FINA World Championships, Team USAheaded to the Pan American Games in hopes of earningan Olympic Berth. The Senior National team went on tocompeteinthe2004AthensOlympics,placingthird.

Four years later, seven UCLA women’s water poloplayersandformerheadcoachGuyBakerspenttwoweeksinAthens,Greece,atthe2004OlympicGames.Sixformerand current Bruins helped lead Team USA to a bronzemedal-winning finish, and Kelly Heuchan competed forAustralia,whichfinishedfourth.

Then-currentBruinsNatalieGolda,ThaliaMunro,AmberStachowski, KellyRulon andGabrielleDomanic (alternate)competed alongside Payne and Beauregard. Baker, whodirected the UCLA water polo program for 10 yearsprior,continuedhiswinningwayswiththeU.S.waterpoloprogram.

TeamUSAcapturedanarrow7-6winoverHungaryingame one, as Rulon netted the game-winning goal. Rulonfinished the opening contest with two goals, and Goldaaddedonegoal.Intheteam’ssecondmatch,TeamUSAlosttoCanada,6-5.BothRulonandBeauregardtalliedonegoalagainsttheCanadianNationalTeam.

In theU.S. team’s third game, theAmericansdownedRussia,8-4, thanks inpart togoals fromBeauregard (2),RulonandStachowski.MunroaddedonegoalinTeamUSA’s6-5losstoItaly,pavingthewayforashowdownbetweentheUnitedStatesandAustralia.

In the bronze medal contest, Team USA registered a6-5win,asUCLA’sathletesscored threeof thesixgoals– Beauregard, Golda and Stachowski each scored once.

Overall in all athletic events in Athens, UCLA rankedamong the nation’s most successful universities. UCLAfinished No. 1 among all universities in the number ofdifferentmedalists(19)andthenumberoftotalOlympians(56). Current and former Bruins earned a total of 19medals, including eight gold medals. UCLA athletes alsoclaimedthreesilvermedalsandeightbronzemedals.
