The Blazers have played 22 games against SEC teams — 24 if you count single contests against Missouri (1999) and Texas A&M (2009) before the Tigers and Aggies were members of the league. UAB is 2-20 against SEC foes. Only twice have the Blazers played home games against an opponent from the SEC with both coming against Mississippi State (2006 and 2011). s The Blazers were just shy of reaching the 500-yard mark in total offense against Troy finishing with 489 (339 rushing and 150 passing). Sophomore running back Jordan Howard rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns while tight end Kennard Backman — named to the Mackey Award preseason watch list this summer — caught a pair of touchdown passes in the win over the Trojans. s The Blazers had two players named to the All-Conference USA first team during the summer. Wide receiver JJ Nelson and punter Hunter Mullins were both tabbed to the first unit by the league’s coaches. Mullins, in addition, was named the C-USA Special Teams Player-of-the-Year. s The Blazers return eight starters on offense and eight on defense, as well as both their kicker and punter, from last season. s Junior quarterback Cody Clements made his first start at UAB last Saturday. The junior college transfer from Cerritos College was an efficient 13-for-19 for 152 yards with a pair of touchdown passes. s The Blazers’ sophomore running back Jordan Howard rushed for 881 yards last season as a true freshman as he split time with Darrin Reaves who left UAB a year early and is now a member of the Carolina Panthers. Howard’s rushing total was the second-best nationally among freshmen in 2013. s JJ Nelson has averaged 20.3 yards per reception on his 83 catches during his career. He caught two for 65 yards in the season opener against Troy. THE COACHES s Bill Clark (Jacksonville State,‘90) is in his first season as the head coach at UAB. Clark came to UAB after spending one year at Jacksonville State where he led the Gamecocks to an 11-4 record and a berth in the NCAA FCS playoffs. JSU concluded the year ranked No. 10 in the final FCS poll and recorded its most wins since the 1992 season. s Dan Mullen (Ursinus, ’94) is in his sixth year as the head coach at Mississippi State. Mullen has compiled a record of 37-28 during that time. He had led the Bulldogs to three bowl appearances during that time. He was offensive coordinator at Florida (2005-08) prior to going to MSU. Please note that there are only two correct versions of our name, the acronym “UAB,” or the full “University of Alabama at Birmingham.” In addition, the Associated Press sports style-book now uses UAB on first reference, not Alabama-Birmingham.

We are not: Alabama-Birmingham, Ala.-Birmingham, or U.A.B.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has been an autonomous member of the University of Alabama system since 1969, and has had an intercollegiate athletic program since 1977. UAB is sometimes confused with the University of Alabama (Crimson Tide), which is located in Tuscaloosa; while this is in-evitable, it is important to note that the two are indeed separate institutions. In addition, the UAB name is often altered by various me-dia, opponents, merchandisers, etc.

HEAD COACHBILL CLARK

Bill Clark, who guided Jack-sonville State to a record-setting season in 2013 and the highest NCAA Division I final ranking in school history, was named head football coach at UAB in Janu-ary, 2014, becoming the fifth head coach in Blazers’ history.

Clark has more than 20 years of experience, having spent a year as the head coach at Jacksonville State before coming to UAB. Prior

to taking the helm of the Gamecocks’ program, Clark was assistant head coach and the defensive coordinator at South Alabama. Before joining the Jaguars’ staff, he was one of the most successful high school coaches in the State of Alabama.

Clark led the Gamecocks to an 11-4 record last season, their most victories since the 1992 campaign when JSU won the NCAA Division II National Championship. That number set an Ohio Valley Conference record and is also the most wins by a first-year head coach.

Jacksonville State earned an at-large berth in the FCS Playoffs and captured two victories -- including a second round win over No. 6 McNeese State -- to reach the quarterfinals. The wins were the Gamecocks’ first-ever in the NCAA Division I playoffs. Jacksonville State concluded the 2013 season ranked No. 10 in the final FCS poll.

Clark became the Jacksonville State head coach after five out-standing seasons at South Alabama as the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator.

Clark joined South Alabama in 2008 after spending nine years as head coach at Prattville (Ala.) High School where he led the Lions to national prominence. He won a pair of Class 6A State Championships as his last two teams won 30 straight games, while the 2007 squad was ranked No. 2 in the nation in USA Today’s national high school poll.

Following his final season at Prattville High School, he was named the Alabama High School Athletic Association Coach of the Year and was also selected as the Schutt Southeast Re-gional Coach of the Year.

He first led the Lions to the Class 6A state playoffs in 2000, his second season guiding the program. Clark earned his first postseason victory a year later, helping Prattville advance to the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual state champion, which is where the Lions’ season would end each of the next two falls.

Clark served on the staff of the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic three times, including as head coach in the summer of 2007. He also served as head coach in the 2004 North-South All-Star Game. Clark began his coaching career as an assistant at Piedmont High School (1990-91) and also has coaching stints at Tuscaloosa County High School (1992-94), Coffee County (Ga.) High School (1995-96) and Dothan High School (1997-98).

He graduated from Jacksonville State in 1990 with a degree in physical education. Clark and his wife, Jennifer, have two children: daughter, Katie (19) and son Jacob (17).

2014 UAB FOOTBALL

The UAB defense pitched a first-half shutout, but Mississippi State scored three second-half touchdowns to leave Legion Field with a 21-3 victory. The Blazers led 3-0 at the half on a Ty Long field goal before Mississippi State’s Tyler Russell replaced an inef-fective Chris Relf at quarterback and threw three touchdown passes. Russell, who played in only two of the first five games this season, started the second half for the Bulldogs (3-3). On his second possession he led the Tigers on a seven-play, 89-yard touch-down drive, capped by an 18-yard pass to Marcus Green. Russell connected with Chad Bum-phis for a 57-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter, and then later hit Malcolm Johnson with a 20-yard scoring pass. Russell complet-ed 11-of-13 passes for 166 yards. The first-half shutout was the first for UAB since the final game of the 2008 season when the Blazers held UCF without a score. UAB also held the Bulldogs to just 118 yards in the open-ing 30 minutes.

UAB quarterback Jonathan Perry, making his second start in place of an injured Bryan Ellis, completed 18 of 36 passes for 195 yards and also ran for 44 yards on nine carries. Pat Shed, a Starkville, Miss., native playing against his hometown team, ran for 73 yards on 16 carries and added a game-high five catches for 32 yards. UAB receivers Jackie Williams and Patrick Hearn extended their reception streaks to 17 and 16 games, respec-tively. Williams’ streak is the fourth-best in UAB history, while Hearn’s is tied for fifth.

PLENTY OF FIREPOWER BACK ON OFFENSEs The Blazers are expected to again feature a high-powered offense as they return eight starters from the 2013 season. Wide receiver Jamarcus Nelson is one of the most dynamic players in college football and enters his final season at UAB with a career average of 20 yards per catch. Nelson has been named to the Watch Lists for both the Biletnikoff and Hornung Awards. s Tight end Kennard Backman has seen his numbers improve with each of his first three seasons and is expecting a banner senior campaign. Backman was tabbed to the Mackey Award Watch List in July. Sophomore running back Jordan Howard rushed for nearly 900 yards as a true freshman and he wasn’t even listed as the team’s feature back.s UAB will have to fill the voids left with the departure of running back Dar-rin Reaves (928 yards, 12 rushing TDs) and at quarterback. The Blazers do not have a quarterback on the roster who has thrown a pass in a game while at UAB. junior Cody Clements, who originally enrolled at Washington State, par-ticipated in spring practice in 2014 after coming to UAB in January. Clements emerged from spring practice as the No. 1 quarterback, but redshirt freshman Jeremiah Briscoe was impressive in fall camp and is also expected to compete for playing time, if not the job.

2014 UAB FOOTBALLNELSON, BACKMAN, MULLINS NAMED TOPRESEASON WATCH LISTSs UAB seniors JJ Nelson, Kennard Backman and Hunter Mullins were all named to watch lists for their respective positions.s Nelson, a wide receiver from nearby Midfield, Ala., was named this summer on a pair of lists — the Paul Hornung Award and the Biletnikoff Award. The Hornung Award is presented annually to the nation’s most versatile player while the Biletnikoff Award goes to the top receiver.s Backman, a three-year starter at tight end, is listed on the John Mackey Award Watch List. The Mackey Award recognizes the country’s outstanding tight end each season.s Mullins, from Tallassee, Ala., is on the Ray Guy Award list for the second consecutive year. The Ray Guy Award is given each season to the nation’s top collegiate punter. Mullins is UAB’s career record holder in average yards per punt.

NELSON = EXPLOSION PLAYSs There’s no doubt that when UAB wide receiver JJ Nelson is on the field, he’s a threat to break a big play.s Nelson has averaged 20.3 yards per reception in his career with 1,683 yards on 83 catches. He ranks among UAB’s all-time leaders in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.s Nelson has 19 touchdowns (16 receiving, 1 rushing, 2 on returns) in his three-year career and 12 of those have covered distances of 40 yards or more.

LONG ON VERGE OF UAB RECORDSs UAB kicker Ty Long entered his senior season needing only 12 field goals to become the Blazers’ all-time leader in three-pointers. After two FGs in the opener against Troy, the senior from Roswell, Ga. now has 48 career field goals and trails UAB career leader Nick Hayes by just nine.s Long put together another outstanding season for the Blazers in 2013 as he made 16-of-24 attempts. He also connected on three field goals of 50 yards last season and now has five of 50 yards or more in his UAB career.

GOOD PRODUCTION BACK AT RECEIVERs UAB entered the 2014 season ranking 14th nationally among schools with the highest percentage of receptions among returning players. The Blazers are one of three Conference USA teams ranked in the top 15 nationally from last season.

O’LEARY ONLY SENIOR AMONG OFFENSIVE LINEMENs Brian O’Leary enters the 2014 season as the Blazers’ most experienced offensive lineman.s The native of Sarasota, Fla. is a fifth-year senior has now made starts in 16 consecutive games. Last year, he started the first 10 games before an injury sidelined him for the final two contests.

STAPLES DEBUT SEASON A SUCCESSs UAB wide receiver Jamari Staples, a product of Lineville, Ala., had a success-ful initial collegiate season for the Blazers.s Staples finished his freshman season with 31 receptions for 458 yards — both second on the team — and ranked among the top first-year receivers in Conference USA.s Staples’ first-year success started early as he made his UAB debut at Troy last Aug. 31, posting six catches for 103 yards and one touchdown.

JJ Nelson (left) and Jamari Staples (right) provide an outstanding re-turning duo at wide receiver. Nelson has 83 career receptions for 1,683 yards and 16 receiving touchdowns. He averages 20 yards per catch in his career. Staples is coming of a true freshman season in which he caught 31 passes for 458 yards with four touchdowns.

2014 UAB FOOTBALL

2014 UAB FOOTBALL

Cody Clements passed for two touch-downs and ran for another, while Jordan Howard rushed for two more in helping the UAB football team beat Troy Univer-sity 48-10 on Saturday. The win gives Blazer head football coach Bill Clark a victory in his debut as UAB’s coach. It marks the first season-opening victory for the Blazers since the 2009 season and the first for a UAB foot-ball head coach in his opening game. UAB opened its 2014 season and the Clark era by falling behind Troy 7-0, but the Blazers rattled off 24-straight points going in to halftime behind Clements and Howard efforts. The Trojans took the opening drive 75 yards on five plays, less than two min-utes into the game, but the Blazers out-scored the vistitors 48-3 and held Troy to only 197 yards the rest of the game. Howard, who rushed for a career-best 179 yards and went over 1,000 yards in only his 12th game as a Blazer, routinely shredded the Trojan defense en route to

74 first-half rushing yards and UAB’s first score, a 2-yard touchdown run. Clements, making his first start for UAB, then sandwiched a 34-yard field goal by Ty Long with a pair of touch-down passes to Kennard Backman to put UAB up 24-7. Ryan Kay cut the UAB lead to 24-10 with a 47-yard Trojan field goal as time expired in the first half. Troy failed to capitalize on a pair of early second half UAB turnovers, before the Blazers sealed the win with Clem-ent’s 55-yard touchdown pass and How-ard’s 1-yard TD run in the third quarter. Senior D.J. Vinson also eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the Blazers, finishing with 106 yards and a touch-down. Defensively, linebacker Jake Ganus led the Blazers with seven tackles, one tackle for loss and a forced fumble. De-fensive end Diaheem Watkins added six stops with a pair of sacks and two tack-les for loss.
