Environmental Colour Assessment:Relationship of Network Rail Galvanising and RAL ‘Moss Green’ fencing to dominant background colours
NTS A3 LscpScale: Sheet Size:
WB EABDrawn: Checked:

Fig No: ECA-09
Revision: - 9
Note that S 2002B is within the Blue hue, whilst the dominant background colours are all within the Yellow-Red (Y50R) hue.
Note also that Galv is both lighter (less blackness) and has less colour (chromaticness) than the dominant background colours.
It is these differences (hue, blackness, chromaticness) which make the galvanised steel finish stand out against the dominant background colour setting.
Dominant background colours recommended for trialing.
S 2005B is the closest to Galvanised steel colour (S 2002B) on this graphic
Examples of leaf greens identified during colour assessment
S 7020-B90G is representative of RAL Moss Green
RAL Moss Green occurs within the pure Green or Blue-Green (B90G) hues, with high blackness and low chromaticness. In contrast, leaf greens were identified within the Yellow-Greens (G30Y to G70Y). As discussed in the text, RAL Moss Green is not a colour which is reflected in the natural landscape. Although it is green, it is the “wrong” green.

The photos on this sheet are all of the same section of OLE (south of South Stoke). They show the difficulty of seeking one colour which will reduce the impact of the OLE, when seen from both high- and low-level viewpoints, when it may be seen as both skylined and backgrounded by landscape.
Nonetheless, it is considered that ‘grounding’ the OLE in the dominant background tones is likely to provide the most useful improvement from the greatest number of locations.

Can’t find one colour to match soil and land/building, background , so neutral colour sits against building.Planting would introduce filigree/screen in front of gantries. Modification of height would reduce below tree height (ATF).Gantry ports cut/mitred/capped to provide clear(?).
Notes
This view towards the woodland, which is predominantly bare branches, with a few flushes of light yellow-green, confirms the dominant colour range listed to the left.
Notes
Note tones of existing building structures, harmonious with background colours

Lardon Chase - zoomed view towards OLE and Gatehampton(LVA V10)
Notes
Multiple shades of blue in close proximity, together with galvanising and Moss Green fencing.
Notes
Similar comments to Pangbourne Station, although the variety and clashing of colour was probably greater.
The overbridge is composed of 4 greys and 3 greens occur on lift and stairs over platform, whilst adjacent fences are blue and RAL ‘Moss Green’
Details and comments
RAL 5005 (Signal blue) Fence RAL 5022 (Night blue) Lamp posts
RAL 6007 (Bottle green) PTFE Coating
RAL 6015 (Black olive) Lift bottom
RAL 6012 (Black green) Steelwork stanchion cement
RAL 7038 (Agate grey) Fibre board (aggregate metal profile another grey - light green tinge)
RAL 7030 (Stone grey) Electricity cabinets
RAL 6005 (Moss green) Fence
Notes
Noted a range of colours within the station structures, a large proportion of which did not appear to be planned or harmonious.
Nonetheless galvanised objects and furniture occur throughout the station. In addition the gantries are generally seen against the sky. It was considered overall, that it would be most effective to leave the gantry colour as it was, and to start any colour modification outside the station where the gantries are seen against the landscape.
The station livery and furniture colours, and overall condition, could be improved by a more consistent and sympathetic approach to colour.
