FESTIVAL AdJUdICATOrS
Sheila Kent M.Sc, GnSM, LTCL, Cert.Ed, FISMSheila Kent graduated from what is now the RNCM in Manchester, before training as a teacher at Manchester University. She headed music departments in schools for over twenty years, teaching all ages, and now gives in-service training to other teachers as an associate tutor for Leicester University. Many of her former pupils are now professional musicians. The Festival movement has been part of Sheila’s life since she was a regular school-age competitor. She spent over ten years on a Festival Committee, and her own pupils regularly enter a wide range of classes. For many years Sheila Kent played chamber music and in orchestras professionally on a freelance basis until forced to stop by a serious injury to her hand. She has been musical director for performances of many of the most popular musicals, and for many years conducted a well-respected choir. Sheila is an instrumental and vocal examiner, working to diploma level. Many of her vocal technique pupils are involved in Musical Theatre, which she also used to examine. As an adjudicator for the British Federation of Festivals she has worked at Music Festivals across the UK, and as far afield as Hong Kong and Zimbabwe.
Alan Fernie drSAM, dip.nCOSAlan Fernie was born and brought up in the Midlothian mining village of Newtongrange. He learned to play the trombone both at school, and with the local brass band, and went on to study music in Glasgow and London. He has spent over thirty years working as a brass instructor, teaching in schools all over the East of Scotland. His compositions and arrangements are now played, recorded and performed all over the world, and he is much in demand as a conductor and an adjudicator throughout the UK and beyond.
Colin Snell BA, PGCEColin Snell is the Artistic Director of the Parker and Snell Company, based in the Isle of Man, which offers classes and workshops in acting for young people and adults of all ages. LAMDA Speech and Drama examinations are also offered. He is a graduate of the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne and holds a PGCE from the University of Leeds. He is a former Head of English and Drama and Director of Drama in state schools and also in the independent sector and is currently a director, teacher, adjudicator and examiner for a number of examination boards in the UK. His productions have been seen throughout the UK and Isle of Man, including the Edinburgh and Buxton Fringe Festivals, the National Student Drama Festivals and the National Theatre’s Connections programme. He is an adjudicator member of the British and International Federation of Festivals, a member of the Guild of Drama Adjudicators (GoDA) and a member of the Society of Teachers of Speech and Drama. As a Speech and Drama adjudicator and examiner he works abroad as well as the UK and is an examiner for LAMDA. He reviews both amateur and professional theatre and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts for his work with young people in drama and theatre.
