Personal CreedI believe in both Gods, the Father and the Mother, and in their Holy Sons and Daughters, nameless in the rattle of the rest, begotten like leaves, as light,of the same substance, seen and unseen, with which all things must flutter.
I believe we are incarnate with the same photosynthetic Spirit, without judgement, without exception, all destined to shine.
I don’t believe that any gospel, multitude of metaphors, their wings clipped, comes close enough to Creationthat we should criticize, less condemn another, leaf of another color.Nor does it justify we be relieved of our personal responsibilityto blossom, delight in the wind.
Crossing After High WaterIt’s not that deep across the bar, to my thighs half way across. But, the stones, the restless ever-shifting stones, keep rolling beneath my feet, tumbling smaller, rounder home. It’s not that far across from this side where the poplars stood, before the rain, before the flood,a rock-skip to the otherto where the oak and bay impartial stand.Too far to jump, to wade,thigh-deep upon a rolling bottom, unable to discern what’s faster, the current or the shore, rumbling downstream to the strainersand deep reversing water, tumbling me smaller, rounder home.
On MC’ing Open ReadingsWe stand naked before the altar of open mic, veiled only in poetic device,to witness metaphor, virgin birth, savor simile in full bloom, moist upon the lips of journeyman and novice alike. There is nothing elevatingin graphic titillation, holy about fellatio, sacred in sodomy, only gratuity.Nothing transcendental about hangnails, floaters in either eye, or stiffies. There is, however, something healing, redeeming in a poet’s touch, poignant, feather light, that leaves no mark upon innocence, only an echo, the shadow of a vision.
DandelionsI like dandelions, the least pretentious, most unwelcome of flowers.Perhaps because they recognize no season,no privilege,no place too smallto joyously reflect the sun.I like dandelions, yellow-faced in the most insipid, most formal of gardens, grateful in the most derelict, hopeless of gutters.Unmarshalled, they do not occupy, fight orange-face against blue-facelike poppies against the lupinebut raise their nebulae of dreamsto be scattered on a wish, the breath of a child.
Jabez W. “Bill” Churchill was born in California, educated in Argentina and California, and has been practicing questionably civil disobedience since 1969. He is a mariner, a single dad, and a teacher of modern languages at Santa Rosa and Mendocino colleges. A California Poet in the Schools since 1998, he is the city of Ukiah’s current poet laureate.
