GALILEO The European Satellite Navigation System
1) What is Galileo2) The Galileo Program3) Services and Applications4) International Cooperation
1) What is Galileo Galileo is the European satellite
navigation system
Satellite systems are used in many fields like traffic, banking, timing (sciences) and surveying
Because of political and economical reasons the EU decided to build up an own satellite system
In this project the ESA (European Space Agency), the European Commission and the European space industry are involved
GALILEO – The European Satellite Navigation System
Definition phase (2000 - 2002) Definition of the basic elements of Galileo A number of projects and comprehensive studies have
contributed to this phase
Development and validation phase (2002 - 2005) system components like satellites, ground components,
user receivers, etc. are developed First prototype satellites are putted in the orbit
Deployment (2005 - 2008) and operational (2008 onwards) phase
All satellites are launched Galileo operated from 2008

4.1) Services
Five services were definedThese services are provided worldwide
1. The Open Service free of user charge, provides position and timing performances
2. The Safety of Life Serviceimproves the open service performances
3. The Commercial Serviceimproved accuracy, service guarantee are provided
4. The Public Regulated Servicefor users requiring a high continuity of service
5. The Search and Rescue Service
