1958 MoM’s “hoT roD”Fourteen years old is pretty early to be noting your first milestone, but that’s exactly how old he was when Gale Banks first expressed his passion for automotive engineering by tearing down his mother’s ’31 Ford Model A. A “Hot Rodder” from the get-go, he added about 30 horsepower in the process. Taking this early cue from its founder and president, Gale Banks Engineering has continued to set milestone after milestone since 1958.

1958 (yoUng) Man aT Work Here’s a snappily-dressed 16 year old Gale Banks hard at work on his prize-winning 1958 Lynnwood High Science Fair entry: A radio-controlled robot electronic tractor. A car guy all his life, his first recognition was for a robot!

1966 El MiragE anD BonnEvillEGale Banks Engineering started as C.P. Auto & Marine as his business was the source of tuition money for Gale’s engineering studies at Cal Poly. His “Bronco Power” racing engines, named after the university mascot, provided the push and Gale’s 1953 Studebaker took the El Mirage Dry Lake record at 159.01 and the Bonneville salt Flats record at 184.52 mph. A 337cubic inch, Hilborn-injected, small block Chevrolet was under that swoopy hood.

1970 FirsT “galE Banks”-BranDED TUrBo MarinE racing EnginEAfter more than a decade of building supercharged engines, Banks’ testing revealed the superiority of Turbocharging. Banks’ turbocharged marine engines proved the point by setting records in a wide range of race boat competition divisions, including deep water off-shore endurance.

1973 ThE FirsT sUrFacE EFFEcTs EnDUrancE BoaTAfter witnessing the success of Banks engines, Lou Brunette brought his triple outboard Jones Tunnel to Banks for an inboard/stern drive up-fit. The design had almost no tunnel compression ratio to achieve lift. “We monitored and water speed to prevent a blow over,” Banks recalled “To achieve 120 miles per hour, it had to run right on the ragged edge, I handed the boat over to another driver… No more Jones Tunnel.”

1972 “griT” #1 inBoarDThis Banks-powered 18’ Mandella “Center Deck” racing hull won the grueling Parker 9-Hour Enduro three years in a row. “Grit” became the showcase boat for the Mandella Boat Company and the Banks Endurance Marine Engine Program.

1970 apBa & nJBa JET class naTional chaMpionOldsmobile commissioned Banks to develop their 455 cid V-8 as a marine endurance racing engine. An extensive air flow, oil system and mechanical redesign brought this boulevard cruiser big block to the winner’s circle. “We beat the invincible big block Chevys with an engine that was never intended for high RPM endurance use” said Banks. “This was a huge challenge.”

1976 ThE crUciFiErThe “Crucifier” powered by a Gale Banks injected nitro HEMI set records and won every event including NDBA and APBA Nationals. Banks stated, “I didn’t own a Hydrometer, this thing ran on 100% nitro!”

FirsT “galE Banks” proDUcTion TUrBo MarinE EnginEThe Rated at a stout 650 BHP at 5,400 RPM, these engines continued the OEM engine relationship between Chevrolet and Banks. Built for Banks at General Motor’s Tonawanda engine plant, these 454 cid assemblies were then blueprinted, balanced, and uprated with Banks pistons, cams, valve gear and the company’s own fully-jacketed twin-turbo marine system.

1976 hUrry roUnD honDoHurry Round Hondo, 1800 hp Twin-Turbo on methanol won every race including the NJBA and APBA Nationals, and broke many records along the way.

1975 inTErEsT in DiEsEl BEginsThe study of future engine prompted Banks to take a closer look at the attributes of the diesel engine. Being a futurist, he quickly recognized that the efficency and infrastructure of the “oil-burner” made it a clear winner among some of the other proposed concepts.

1974 Banks/BrUnETTE apBa naTional chaMpion In the mid-70’s the Marathon Boat Company supplied an 850-pound tunnel hull that, once powered by a Banks 398 cid engine, became unbeatable. Rigged and developed at Banks’ San Gabriel facility, the 140 mile-per-hour racer went on to win the Parker 9-Hour Enduro and was the APBA Endurance Tunnel National Champion for the next five years. An innovative tunnel and stern drive control designed at Banks optimized top speed as well as high speed maneuverability.

1978 lsrv prograMBanks was contracted by N.I.S.T.A. to develope what became known as the Large Research Safety Vehicle (L.R.S.V.) Program. The finished vehicle used a Banks powertrain which consisted of a Lancia-Beta front drive system with low-mass wheels and low-restriction tires and was fitted with a Banks-developed turbocharged B21 engine. When completed it met 1985 fuel and emissions standards.

1978 volvoYet another future powertrain development program, this time for Volvo. Banks developed the World’s first electronically injected, O2 sensing turbocharged engine for them. This efficienct platform set Volvo on their way to making the turbo engine a popular option in the early 80’s and beyond.

1978 hanky-pankyBruce Geisler brought the Studie out of retirement, Banks put in his 300”, 930 hp Twin-Turbo Chevy and Chote legged it to 217, World’s fastest passenger car!

1982 ThE sUnDoWnErThe “Sundowner” bumps Geisler’s Hanky-Panky 217 mph record all the way to 240 mph. Duane McKinney pushed the loud pedal and Bob Kehoe’s beautiful Corvette with Banks Twin-Turbo big block became the new World’s fastest passenger car. Two in a row for Banks!

1982 200 Mph Trans aMBanks’ American Turbocar Corp. started the Turbo Tuner craze. 700 bhp, 1 G lateral and 204 mph running the A/C…these things rocked the world. Car & Driver’s Ceaba Csere proved the point on Mrs. Orcutt’s driveway.

1982 s-1 EXprEssUsing the Banks Turbocharged engines he had run all season, Butch Ryan drove Express to a World Championship at Key West. Then on the same engines he set the flying kilometer record. APBA had enough of Gale Banks, so they banned Turbocharging.

1982 1100 horsEpoWErPeter Minallas came from Johannesburg wanting a 240 mph, street sleeper. Banks complied and Minallas set the record at 406 kph (240+ mph) at the South African National Speed Trials (6000’ of altitude) then he drove it home.

1984 king sTingJim Denooyer posted top speed on Saturday, everybody said the engines were set on kill and would never last in Sundays marathon and two years in a row, he won that too! So in year number three, POPBRA banned turboed tunnel boats. Sometimes your boat is too damn fast and too damn reliable…thanks, Banks!

1990 syclonEGMC General Manager, John Rock asked Gale for a suggestion on marketing a GMC sport truck. “Go 200 mph in a pick-up truck” was Gale’s immediate response. So they went out and did it…300 inch V-6, intercooled, but no turbos. World’s Fastest Pick-Up Truck at 210 mph!

1988 Banks FacTory opTionGM partnered with Banks to make a dealer-specified ship-through installation of the Banks 6.2 turbo system and made it available nation wide. The program ran for three years and helped GM buy some time till their 6.5 liter engine came out.

1991 aMErican roaDsTEr EXpEriMEnTal“The AREX (American Roadster Experimental) is an American car,” designer David Stollery explained, “and I feel Chevrolet has that image … the Heartbeat of America.” He was unable to get GM motors, but they did introduce us to Gale Banks. The guys at Banks built a prototype intercooled Twin-Turbo 6-liter Chevy, capable of in excess of 800 hp. They stuffed it in the middle of the AREX and shipped it to the GM exhibit at the Detroit Auto Show. This thing blew their minds!

1992 DoDgE cUMMinsBy 1989 Banks turbo systems were running on over 30,000 pick-up trucks. The Dodge Cummins was the first factory turboed diesel when introduced that year. So, Banks came up with a system that added over 80 hp to the Cummins. The Twin-Ram intake manifold made huge airflow improvements and Banks first diesel intercooler completed the package.

1993 TUrBo sysTEMBanks’ 6.2L GM diesel turbo system marked the beginning of the diesel power after-market in 1981. It was soon followed by the Ford 6.9L turbo system in 1983. Both systems utilized Banks designed turbochargers. In 1993, a revolutionary new turbo was introduced under the Sidewinder brand. A whole new quick reacting system was the result.

1994 poWEr sTrokEFord introduced their direct injected Power Stroke 7.3L diesel in 1994. Earlier diesel offerings from the big 3 had no turbos so Banks turbocharged them. Later big 3 diesel offerings were turboed but had no intercooling. So, starting in 1989 Banks offered intercooling first on the Dodge Cummins and then in 1994 on the Power Stroke. Banks PowerPack for these engines also added tuning and exhaust system components adding 120 hp, 256 lb-ft, and 10% fuel economy.

1992 TWin-TUrBo MarinE EnginEsFrom 1976 until the mid 1990’s, Banks 930 hp Twin-Turbo marine engines, dominated World-Class endurance river racing. These unbreakable engines scored wins in races up to eleven days in length. In all, more than a dozen World championships were won running these “Gale Banks Marine Engines” by teams from around the world. “An injected version was designed but never built,” says Gale, “there were just too many diesel trucks for us to deal with.”

2010 Banks sEQUEnTial sUpEr-TUrBo DiEsEl MarinE EnginE BEgins TEsTingIt has a very long name and a foreboding look… It’s the Banks Sequential Super-Turbo Marine Diesel. This engine had been on the minds, drawing boards, computer screens, PDA’s, benches and engine stands of the Banks Power engineering, design and race shop staff for some two years. On January 15, 2010, covered in electrical lines that connect to sensors monitoring some 200+ points of information, this very special General Motors Duramax-based V-8 diesel engine fired up first on the try, went effortlessly into a nice, clean 900RPM idle, and sounded to all within earshot as though it was quite eager for the kind of extreme duty service that lied ahead for it. Combining the low speed power and transient response of supercharging with the high speed power and cruising efficiency of twin-turbocharging this new engine is aimed squarely at marine use where, as Gale Banks so aptly puts it, “You’re always going uphill.” Here’s 6.6 liters of clean-burning diesel V-8 that’ll crank out some 800 horsepower and twist up 900 pounds-feet of torque across a working rev range of 1,600 to 4,600 RPM.

Affectionately dubbed, “The Fridge,” these Fusion Deposition Modeling (FDM) units are capable of “printing” three-dimensional parts directly from CAD drawings. The rapid-prototyped parts help eliminate costly time delays. These parts, once assembled, are near-perfect representations of the final product and are invaluable tools in fit and finish tailoring.

Entire cooling and intake packages can be modeled, fitted in place and flow tested through computational fluid dynamics (C.F.D.) in virtual reality before even a single part is actually formed. Getting results before starting to build a single part ensures efficiency.

Scanning of mating surfaces and area that is available to work with, be it inside or outside of a vehicle, affords the engineers the ability to construct the environment they’re working within 3D. Parts are designed to fit every time from the start.

Production Engineering

Every Banks product is manufactured to

exacting specifications, with no expense

spared to ensure its excellence. The

meticulous precision that occurs in each

step of Banks’ design-to-manufacturing

process, combined with tight quality control,

turns out the most durable and highest

performance products available.

Mechanical Engineering

The components and various systems

are developed for production purposes

here. Precision and attention to details

ensure the final products are correctly

produced, and that they fit every time…

no matter where they are in the world.

Originally founded in 1953, Automotive Balancing Service was the very first high-performance engine balancing shop, and has balanced components for some of the world’s fastest vehicles. The company is a part of Banks and now resides on site.

Electrical Engineering

Critical electronic components and

systems are not only designed here, but

software, firmware and all prototypes

are made here and tested before

going into production. From simple

wire harnesses to complex circuitry,

nothing is beyond this group’s grasp.

Banks Technologies has created a multitude of equipment designed to not only speed up the progress of product development, but the accuracy of it as well. Pictured here is a vehicle simulator that emulates the various signals from the components of a vehicle’s powertrain. Using such technology allows for the elimination of the guesswork before hands even touch the vehicle.

Our desktop injection test bench gives our engineers the ability to simulate injection events outside of the engine. This allows us to write software for our tuner products, adjusting pulse-width and injection timing safely for today’s common-rail diesel.

Electronics are designed, software and firmware written, prototypes are made and testing begins shortly thereafter. The pre-production units are put through a battery of tests including the environmental test chamber, where humidity can be controlled, and temperatures range from -70 below zero to +170 degrees Celsius depending on the specific test.

GaleBanksEngineering CAlIBRATION & TEST GROUP

Calibration Group

Two words best describe this group: total control.

Engine, and the entire powertrain for that matter,

cannot be managed by “best guesses” or by feel. Those

are factors that put to the side and replaced by hard

data. Precise electronic control of today’s mechanical

components yields power, efficiency and endurance.

Every aspect of the engine, gasoline or diesel, is measured and recorded in test cells. On-the-fly adjustments to the calibration combined with the live stream of data yield proven results.

The Banks Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is fully capable of controlling a 4, 6 or 8 cylinder modern diesel engine. Shown with ETAS calibration and data acquisition equipment.

The combustion analysis equipment used in the dyno control room is capable of displaying the combustion data per cylinder over a selected number of cycles in real-time and is able to acquire pressure data every 1/10 of a degree at speeds up to 20,000 RPM.

Test Group

The Test Group takes the pre-production parts

and puts them through their paces taking

them out on the road for data acquisition

equipped, real-world testing. Every step is

taken to ensure that the needed data is

acquired, and that conditions are ideal for

each related test run.

Some tests call for controlled situations, such

as steady state chassis runs. Our dynamometer

was built for just for this: double, air-cooled

rollers ensure both tire contact and a constant

tire temperature are kept while air is rammed

into the front simulating 60+ MPH of air.

Banks also specially designed it’s own fuel

flow metering equipment…because there

wasn’t anything in existence accurate enough

by their standards. By keeping temperatures

constant from the cooling and intake package

to the tires, and properly monitoring fuel

usage unbeatable test data can be obtained.

Equipment such as the micro-soot analyzer and the emissions test stands measure the amount of particulates in the exhaust stream, and when combined with the other resources at our disposal calibrations can be refined to ensure the strictest guidelines are followed…and yield economical performance.

GaleBanksEngineering MOTORSPORTS GROUP

While most people see our motorsports

projects as “racing” ventures we see

it as a culmination of our combined

groups. The result: data acquisition

equipped testing in the most demanding

conditions, often running in either (or

both) a transient response or endurance

test-beds. Such examples include our

record settling stable of performance

oriented vehicles including Sidewinder

Dodge Dakota, Sidewinder GMC Sierra

endurance roadrace diesel truck, the

Sidewinder Chevy S-10 diesel drag truck

and the upcoming Sidewinder dragster.

Banks Motorsports Group

The Sidewinder S-10 recently broke its own previously set record run returning 7.77 @ 180.00 mph.

Banks Sidewinder Top Dragster — Built to reach out & strike someone, the Sidewinder has already ran @ 7.17 E.T. and 191 mph on its way to 6 seconds and 200 mph.

The Sidewinder GMC Sierra diesel-powered road race truck was fully designed and entirely constructed under the Banks campus roof, and showcases the true abilities of Banks.

The Sidewinder Dakota still retains the record for the World’s Fastest Diesel Truck. Many have tried to take the title, including entries Roush and SPAL to mention a few, but none have come close.

Enhancing calibrations and testing both the limits of stock and Banks components in extreme endurance situations is nothing new. Above are two examples of our recent off-road data collecting vehicles that competed against a field of purpose built race vehicles.
