MATILDA’S STAR VISITS OAKHILL

Co-Captain and Matilda’s veteran player Lisa De Vanna visited Oakhill last week before flying out with the National team to play in the 2015 Women’s Football World Cup held in Canada. Lisa, who has represented Australia for the past 13 years, has been part of three winning WSL Premiership Teams and received the honour of the FIFA Puskás Award nominee and being named Australian Football Awards Female Footballer of the Year in 2013, spent time with the Oakhill Girls A and B soccer teams talking about her career and the impending World Cup. When Stephanie Witt (Year 12) asked her about being the team co-captain for the first time, Lisa replied ‘it is very different from just playing in a team. You can’t just focus on yourself anymore. You have to motivate your team on and off the field’. When asked about what have been some of her highlights over the years, Lisa spoke about how wearing the National jersey and hearing the Anthem in front of a huge crowd made her want to play harder because she knew people back in Australia would be cheering her and the team on. Lisa’s mentor and Oakhill teacher, Ms Rose Garofano, invited Lisa to the school to inspire the girls to dream big and to believe in themselves. She said that Lisa is a perfect example of someone who struggled at school but never let this stop her from working hard to achieve her dream of representing Australia. ‘This is a life lesson’ explained Ms Garofano. ‘No matter what you want to achieve, it requires dedication and commitment.’ Lisa will be playing her 100

th game when she and the team play against the USA on Monday 8

th June (Canadian

time).

This week Year 7 homerooms launched the Super 7s Reading Challenge and English teachers Years 8-10 launched the Winter Reading Challenge. Here students are encouraged to read over Winter. Academic merits will be given to students who are making a solid effort to achieve their personal best in Week 2, Term 4. These merits will contribute to the Oakhill Cup Challenge. Two students from each class will be nominated by their teacher to receive an award for Class Best Achievement and attend a special Pizza Lunch to celebrate their success. This is a great time to snuggle up in front of the fire or in bed and escape into the world of a good book. Parents are asked to encourage their son(s) to set a reading goal to work towards over Winter. Benefits of reading for pleasure Studies show that promoting reading can have a major impact on children and adults and their future. Several main areas of the benefits to reading for pleasure include:

Reading attainment and writing ability;

Text comprehension and grammar;

Breadth of vocabulary;

Positive reading attitudes;

Greater self-confidence as a reader;

Pleasure in reading in later life;

General knowledge;

A better understanding of other cultures;

Community participation; and

A greater insight into human nature and decision-

making.

News and Events WINTER READING INITIATIVE

Last Wednesday, Trish, who is a cook in an industrial kitchen and who is also of Aboriginal heritage came to Oakhill to share her knowledge of Aboriginal foods and traditional Indigenous cooking techniques with the Year 9 Food Technology students. Over the lesson, Trish prepared and cooked Kangaroo fillets, which is a healthier alternative to steak, and tastes just as good, if not better than a traditional piece of steak. The Kangaroo was mixed together with vegetables and served in a lettuce leaf and eaten as a ‘San-Chow-Bow’, an Asian meal usually served with Pork. This was delicious, and in my opinion was much better than traditional Pork San-Chow-Bow. Trish also prepared a bush cordial. A lemon myrtle cake, was also served, with a plum sauce drizzled over the top. This was probably the highlight of the day, and it tasted exquisite!

I would like to thank Trish for taking the time to come and teach us about traditional Australian bush foods, as well as Mrs Isaacs for arranging the experience. It was a great learning experience and I would definitely recommend these recipes to everyone who would like to taste traditional Australian bush foods in a modern way. Ryan Murray (Year 9)

Art in the Hills is a Parents and Friends initiative, which took place in March. This year’s theme was Unity.

Students were encouraged to submit a photographic entry that best represented the topic. Congratulations to Christopher Wadih of Year 10 and Darcy Thomas of Year 9 who were the worthy recipients of the Brother Ken Ormerod Perpetual Trophies for 2015 in the Senior and Junior awards respectively.

Christopher’s image of a senior sporting team, with a tight knit, passionate crowd depicted the concept of unity most convincingly.

Thank you to all the students who made the effort to participate in this competition.

On Tuesday 19th May Year 11 students attended a

Sacred Places Excursion for Studies of Religion. Four different itineraries and groups travelled around Sydney, each visiting three different churches or places of worship. The places visited included:

St Patrick’s Cathedral Parramatta;

St Paul’s Anglican Church Castle Hill;

St Raphael’s, Irene and Greek Orthodox Church Liverpool;

Parramatta Mission, Uniting Church Centre;

Gallipoli Mosque, Auburn;

The Great Synagogue, Elizabeth Street, Sydney. The day provided many insights into the beliefs, ethics and rituals of the different Christian variants as well as the non-Christian traditions of Islam and Judaism. The information shared at each of the venues and the hospitality shown was greatly appreciated by the staff and students. Students’ Highlights “My highlight was the orthodox church as it had many icons and pictures which were interesting as I have never seen images and wall designs like it.” James “The highlight would be the overall learning experience of the different religions. It was interesting to learn about religions as I got to understand obligations that my friends follow who are Muslim. So visiting the Mosque was a valuable experience.” Paulina “My highlight was seeing the amazing things religion can do even when there is a lack of funding. This was at the Uniting Church”. Simon

Excursions YEAR 11 STUDIES OF RELIGION

“I found the different, variants views of idols interesting how they all had varying levels of strictness on it”. David “The highlight of the day was visiting the Islamic mosque and seeing the detail of the painted walls and ceiling”. Luke What I Would Like Most To Tell Others “How much charity work the Uniting Church does. They put in so much time into lending a hand to the underprivileged people in society”. Cooper “The Islamic religion only uses words to describe god; no imagery.” David “The paintings in the Muslim Mosque.” James “The different obligations and dedication that Muslims follow. Also the different symbolic meanings in the Orthodox Church.” “In the Mosque I learned what ‘Allahu Akbar’ means (God is the greatest) and how it relates to their religious beliefs.” Luke “In the Greek Orthodox Church, the different sections of the church”. On the 21st of May,

Year 12 Food Technology students left school at 7 am for an excursion to the barramundi farm, to compliment our study of Aquaculture and

fisheries within the Australian Food Industry. We travelled in the Oakhill College Bus, driven by Miss O’Hara, and arrived at Cookabarra Restaurant, and barramundi farm in Bob’s Farm, Nelson Bay at around 10am. Here we were given a tour of the barramundi farm, where we learnt about how an aquaculture farm works. Inside the breeding tank, at a set 27°C, we saw the process of sorting fingerlings into fully-grown barramundi. We were even given the opportunity to feed them. After our tour of the farm, we went outside and learnt about the hydroponic garden, and saw fresh growing vegetables. We were lucky enough to visit the kitchen of Cookabarra Restaurant, where we were prepared deep fried barramundi and pizza for lunch. It was a great day, and we enjoyed our time at Cookabarra. We learnt lots of new information and facts which will help with our knowledge of Aquaculture. Brittany Miller (Year 12)

Excursions YEAR 12 FOOD TECHNOLOGY

focus of the day was to become inspired by the artists’ works of the past and present. The Art Gallery of New South Wales was our first stop where we viewed The Photograph and Australia exhibition. The students appreciated the differences in the way images have been taken since the 18th century and the similarities of the genres used today. From there we made our way to the State Library of New South Wales to view the powerful collection of works in the World Press 2015 and SMH1440 exhibitions. Students could see how a photographer, at any moment can capture a still image that is so moving.

Later in the afternoon we visited the Museum of Contemporary Art and experienced Luminous an exhibition of light and space. This provided the students an opportunity to experiment taking photographs in unusual lighting situations. At dusk we attended a night photography workshop whereby the students were taught how to prepare and set their cameras appropriately for a night shoot. They enjoyed seeing their own compositions come to life as they photographed the MCA, Sydney Opera House and Light sculptures near the Sydney Harbour Bridge as part of VIVID. The day was long and students were exceptional and are to be commended on their involvement and behaviour throughout the entire day.

YEAR 10 PHOTOGRAPHY EXCURSION
