Today we have made significant progress in re-establishing the capacity to this system that serves US agriculture and the world’s grain trade. We expect an extended effort will be necessary to bring the transportation infrastructure, grain handling facilities and important services in the region to full capacity. Continued patience and collaboration from the international grain trade will be needed during this time of recovery. The good news is that the grain trade, with support of government and numerous volunteers in the region, has responded effectively and we are clearly on the road to recovery of the vital system we call the Mississippi River / Center Gulf. NAEGA and the National Grain and Feed Association are issuing periodic statements concerning the recovery of the grain export industry. Please feel free to access those reports on our websites: www.naega.org and www.ngfa.org. The real tragedy of this unfortunate situation resides with the people of the region. Hundreds of men and women are critical to the operation of this major component of the US agricultural economy and service the international grain trade. Today many of those who have served us so effectively are in need as a result of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation. In reaction to this need, individuals and businesses from across the US agriculture and international grain industry have united to “help our own” and provide support for the recovery of the Center Gulf region by helping those who have served us so well. The Agriculture River Recovery Fund (ARRFund) has been established to collect and disburse funds to the people and families that work to serve agriculture and have suffered personal loss or injury, been displaced, or suffered economic loss as a result of Katrina. As a further extension of the support you have already given and for which we are so grateful, the leadership of GAFTA has been kind enough to join the Advisory Board of the ARRFund. The devastation of Chalmette, Louisiana Hard Issues Discussed in Ukraine The Second International Grain Conference “Bringing the Trade Together”, organised by GAFTA and the UGA (Ukrainian Grain Association), was held in Kyiv on 7th and 8th September. The conference sparked much debate on agricultural policy and the trading environment in Ukraine, which aims to restore itself as the “bread basket of Europe”. A domestic governmental crisis also occurred. A full report of the papers given over the two days is given on page 7.
