Cessna confirmed in mid-September that they have received an order for 79 Cessna172 Skyhawk aircraft, one of the largestorders on record for the aircraft, at Moscow’sJetExpo 2013.

Moscow-based ViraZH, plans to use theSkyhawks for training purposes at various flightschools throughout western Russia. The orderis part of a multi-year agreement betweenCessna and ViraZH, with all 79 aircraft set to be delivered by the third quarter of 2014.On completion of the final delivery, ViraZH willhave one of the world’s largest fleets ofSkyhawk 172 aircraft in operation.

Day 1Dr. Norbert Lohl,CertificationDirector for theEuropean AviationSafety Agency(EASA) deliveredthe keynoteaddress thatopened theHelitech International Conference, staged atExCeL, London, on Tuesday 24th September– run in association with the EuropeanHelicopter Association.

In a session which focused upon future opportunitiesand challenges within the rotorcraft sector, Dr Lohl told an international audience that rotorcraft’sgrowing position within the aviation industry requireda responsible approach to certification. He highlighted a series of recent innovations - suchas tiltrotor, compound helicopters, unmanned aerialvehicles (UAVs), fly-by-wire operating systems andtouchscreen interfaces – that necessitate a new certifi-cation basis whilst simultaneously reevaluating certifi-cation for existing procedures.

Day 2 The conference’s morning session on the second dayof Helitech International focused upon the experi-ences of air ambulance operators across Europe.Gerry Hermer – Aviation Consultant, East Anglian AirAmbulance – began proceedings by making a com-pelling case in support of Night HelicopterEmergency Medical Services Operations (nightHEMS) before passing the floor to a succession ofoperatives from the UK, Spain, Germany and Norway.

The well-attended session heard presentations from:Captain Pete Cumming, Bond Air Services; CaptainAlex Stobo, also from Bond Air Services; CaptainCarols de la Cruz, INAER; Captain Harald Weber,DRF Luftrettung; and Erik Norman, Norwegian AirAmbulance.

Day 3The theme for the final day of the Conference was'Business Challenges and Opportunities,' with themorning proceedings moderated by Dominic Perry,News Editor at Flightglobal. The first speaker was DrAndrew Black, Director and Head of Analysis at HawkAssociates, who presented an analysis and outlookfor the rotorcraft sector, highlighting market forecastsin terms of sales and values as well as sector trendsand new market opportunities.

Although overall projections may favour western pro-ducers, Dr Black stated that Russian manufacturerswill produce the largest number of heavy helicoptersbetween 2013 and 2022, followed by Sikorsky,Boeing and NH Industries. He also warned that themarket share of companies in the west could alsocome under threat from new competitors in the market, including India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Ltdand China’s AVIC, with the light military sector providing them with early opportunities.

Announcements and launches from the show floorEurocopter, AgustaWestland, Bell Helicopter andPremiAir were amongst a broad range of exhibitorsthat utilised Helitech International as a platform for anarray of significant contract signings and servicelaunches.

Eurocopter took the opportunity to announce thattwo customers had bought the VIP version of itsEC175. These bookings came only six months afterthe twin-engine, medium-class helicopter was initiallyintroduced to the high-end market with a speciallydesigned elegant and luxurious interior.

AgustaWestland announced the establishment ofGulf Helicopters as an AgustaWestland AuthorisedTraining Centre and Milestone Aviation andAgustaWestland signed a multi-aircraft, multi-yearframework agreement for the purchase of an undis-closed number of helicopters covering the AW169,AW139 and AW189 models.

Bell Helicopter had a highly successful event with anumber of announcements being published includ-ing an agreement with Avincis Group for the sale ofup to 20 helicopters comprised of the Bell 429, Bell412 and Bell 412EPI aircraft; whilst MD Helicoptersstated that the Kurdistan Regional Governmentplaced an order for 12 new MD 530F platforms. Thecompany also revealed the delivery of the first Bell407GX helicopter in Switzerland to Alpinlift HelikopterAG for utility operations.

PremiAir Aviation used Helitech International as aplatform to raise awareness of the company’s newlyrebranded heliport. Now owned by Graham Avery,PremiAir Aviation has rebranded its BlackbusheAirport facility in Surrey as The West LondonHeliport. The heliport is designed to offer a cost effi-cient alternative for the South East region of the UKwith landing fees coming in at a third of the price ofexisting suppliers.

If you were wondering what happened to the Seawind, they have been quietly makingpainstakingly slow progress in their quest to certify the Seawind in Canada and the U.S.What they lacked in funding, they have made upin a resolve to succeed.

Seawind has just released that it took a year of flightdevelopment to try to overcome a regulation thatrequires an aircraft, even if it totally loses power andenters a deep stall and then a spin, the aircraft mustrecover in one turn without the use of any power.

Because of its amphibious design with the highmounted engine, a wind-milling propeller at zerothrust condition blocks the airflow over the rudderand makes it less than effective.

The Seawind passed every other test and spenta year in flight development

The Seawind passed every other test and spent ayear in flight development, trying different configura-tions to energize the air across the rudder. A parachute was not an option because it has toconnect at the location of the propeller. Seawind

took the bold step and decided to develop a stickshaker and pusher system. If an aircraft won’t stall,then you can’t put it in a spin. Exploring new ground,Seawind set out to develop the first General AviationStall/Spin Prevention System (SPS). After anotheryear and half of development and testing, Seawindhas successfully developed and flight tested a newSPS.

The sexy sculptured Seawind will be the first single engine, Part 23, General Aviation Aircraft tohave an SPS system. Add to that, Seawind will bethe fastest and first all composite amphibian to becertified and that is a truly major accomplishment.Richard Silva, the driving force behind the Seawind,added “without the efforts of John Taylor, our flightanalyst, and our Flight Test Team at the CanadaNational Research Council, and Safe FlightInstrument Corp. we would not have been successful.”

PIPISTREL’s SINUSFLEX OFFERS TWOAIRCRAFT IN ONE

Pipistrel has introduced a new LSA, which offersthe capability of quickly turning the airplane froma motorglider into a cross-country cruiser.

The Sinus Flex is a standard Sinus model, whichwas designed with a 49-foot 1.5-inch wingspan. But the outermost parts of the Flex version's wingsare removable and can be substituted for shorterwingtips, giving the Sinus the same wingspan asPipistrel's Virus - an LSA designed for cross-countryflights and flight instruction.

The Slovenian company claims the wing transformation can be done in as little as five minutes using a standard wrench. The shorterwingspan is 41 feet, which also makes the LSAmuch easier to fit into a hangar.

If you already own a Sinus you can remove thewings and replace them with the flexible wings toenjoy the benefits of the wingtip swap. The cost of the Flex wings is about €6,055, and Pipistrel willtake the old wings in return. The amount of creditreceived for the used wings depends on their condition. Customers who are only looking for theshorter wingspan to fit the airplane into a smallerhangar can order the Flex wings without thereplacement wingtips for about €3,850.

While Sinus owners can essentially turn their airplanes into a Virus (there are some slight differences other than the wings), the opposite isnot true. A Pipistrel representative said the reasonfor this is that the VNE for the Virus is 135 knots,while the Sinus Flex wing is only approved for aVNE of 120 knots.

The Sinus and Virus are both offered with tailwheelor tricycle landing gear, but once the gear configuration has been selected it cannot be modified.

TURBOPROP ANNIVERSARYGulfstream recentlycelebrated the 55thanniversary of the first Gulfstream I (GI) flight. The twin-engine turboprop was thefirst aircraft specifically designed and built forbusiness travel.

The company delivered 200 GIs between 1958and 1969, when production ceased. The aircraftwas used by many US corporations for businesstravel, but also saw service with five U.S. government agencies and all branches of theU.S. armed forces.

Several of the first Gulfstream aircraft were laterconverted into commuter Airliners. Today, morethan 20 GIs still operate in the US. Several othercountries have GIs on their aircraft registry. The largest fleet (with nine aircraft) is operatedby Phoenix Air Group, an international aircraft services company based in Cartersville, Georgia.

Michael Carlson was the star performer during hisdual displays in hisMercedes-poweredFokker D.VII andBlériot X1 aircraft during theHahnweide-basedoldtimer event during September.

The previous week he had suffered an accidentduring an aborted take-off in another of hisBlériot aircraft at the Swiss Air Show in Dittingen.After cart-wheeling, he amazingly suffered only afew cuts and abrasions and a week later passedhimself fit to put on a breathtaking display atHahnweide.

Other outstandingmoments at thisleading vintageaircraft event was a five-shipformation fly over by the all the remaining airworthy Junkers Ju52’s in the world. Another was the formation of De Havilland aircraft including, D.H.84 Dragon Rapides andD.H.104 Doves.

DFS InternationalBusiness ServicesGmbH, a subsidiaryof the German airnavigation serviceprovider DFSDeutscheFlugsicherung, has purchased R.EisenschmidtGmbH, a companywith a long traditionin the provision of aviation supplies andaccessories. Now that the contract has beensigned, the company is part of the DFS group.

DFS has made this move to consolidate the distribution of its aeronautical publications andaviation products after having outsourced this toan external company for the past several years.

The new managing direc-tor of the Eisenschmidtcompany will be AchimEckermann, the long-timehead of commercial serv-ices in the DFS businessunit Aeronautical Solutions. Among its manytasks, this business unit also oversaw the salesof aviation products. Eckermann takes over the reins of the company along with Jan-EricPutze who will join him as the authorised representative of Eisenschmidt. Putze has managed the sales of DFS products for generaland business aviation since 2008.

Business at the aviation supplier will continueunchanged until the beginning of 2014. That is the target date for combining the DFSrange of products with that of Eisenschmidt. The Citation M2 climbs into the air during its maiden flight.

Cessna celebrated as the first production unit ofits newest business jet, the Citation M2, took itsmaiden flight out of the Independence, Kansasfacility.

Announced in September 2011 the M2 is the latest in a succession of new Cessna aircraft to make its initial production flight, and type certification is expected this autumn. The company outlines that the M2 is the idealaircraft to economically fly up to six passengers

in comfort on a 1,300 nm flight. The CessnaIntrinzic flight deck has Garmin G3000 avionicsfeaturing high-resolution multifunction displaysand splitscreen capability. Touch screen interactivity comparable to a Smartphone provides pilots with the precise performanceinformation they need in a logical, familiar user interface.

Jet Aviation Zurich has opened its newlyrebranded and refurbished FBO facility at ZurichAirport, Switzerland. The building, which hasbeen erected alongside the existing GeneralAviation Centre, features the same corporatelook and feel that the company unveiled earlierthis year at its Geneva FBO.

The roomier Jet Aviation Zurich FBO has aseparate entrance with a new reception areaand customer lounge incorporating the new branding. The company also moved its operations center ramp-side, separating itfrom the customer area and situating it closer to the more spacious customs and immigration area.

Cambridge International Airport, UK, welcomesnew business aviation charter operator BluHalkin Limited to the growing East of Englandhub this month. Blu Halkin became the air-port’s fifth UK AOC based operator when it celebrated its maiden flight from Cambridge to Milan with its Citation CJ3 (G-PAOL) at theend of August.

Blu Halkin’s second base is in Northern Italy,but it selected Cambridge as its UK homeowing to its outstanding business aviationmaintenance expertise, further bolstered by therecent acquisition of the Hawker Beechcraft LtdMRO in Broughton, and its excellent groundhandling capabilities.

It will offer Land, Park and Go services for visit-ing helicopter arrivals headed for the South Eastof England. SAFETYEUROCOPTER’sEMERGENCY FLOTATIONGEAR The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for Eurocopter France(Eurocopter) Model EC120B and EC130B4 helicopters with a certain emergency flotationgear (float) installed. This AD requires inspectingthe float for chafing of the fabric covering andadding protectors to the float installation to prevent contact between the float and the protruding sections of the installation.

This AD was prompted by a report of a float thatwould not inflate during overhaul because one of the float compartments was punctured due tochafing. The actions of this AD are intended toprevent failure of float and subsequent loss ofcontrol of the helicopter during an emergencywater landing.

NASA CRASHES HELICOPTERTO STUDY SAFETY

Researchers and firefighters making first checkson the CH-46 Sea Knight fuselage following the

crash test.

NASA researchers have dropped a 45-foot-long helicopter fuselage from a height ofabout 30 feet to test improved seat belts andseats and advance experimental techniquesand crashworthiness data.

NASA collaborated with the U.S. Navy, U.S.Army and Federal Aviation Administration onthe Transport Rotorcraft Airframe Crash TestBed full-scale crash tests at Langley's Landingand Impact Research Facility. The Navy provided the CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter fuselages, seats, crash test dummies andother experiments for the test. The Army contributed a litter experiment with a crashtest dummy.

The Federal Aviation Administration provideda side-facing specialized crash test dummyand part of the data acquisition system.Cobham Life Support-St. Petersburg, a division of CONAX Florida Corporation, alsocontributed an active restraint system for the cockpit.

NASA will use the test results in efforts toimprove rotorcraft performance and efficiency,in part by assessing the reliability of high performance, lightweight composite materials.Researchers also want to increase industryknowledge and create more complete computer models that can be used to design better helicopters.

The helipadwill help savethe lives ofpeople living, working andcommuting inLondon by significantlyreducing trans-fer times to theMajor Trauma Centre at St George's Hospital.

Patients with serious injuries, such as those causedby road accidents, shootings, stabbings, majorburns and falls from height can be treated morequickly, rather than being taken to hospitals further afield, often flying over St George's.

The HELP Appeal, which has provided a grant of £1 million towards the construction of the helipad at St George's Hospital, is a charity established by the County Air Ambulance Trust. It relies entirely on charitable donations and is raising much needed funds to help finance helipad facilities at key emergency departmentsacross the county.

IMAGING TURRETSDENMARK SELECTS L-3 sMXTM-15 IMAGING TURRETS FOR AW101’s

L-3 WESCAMannounced today that it hasreceived an acquisition andsustainment contract from theDanish DefenceAcquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO)to provide a minimum of eight MXTM-15 electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) imaging systems forthe Royal Danish Air Force’s (RDAF) EH101®aircraft. System deliveries are expected to becomplete by 2014.

Installation of the turrets will be done by DALO,while certification and configuration management

will be provided byAgustaWestland. The newly equipped EH101swill then be deployed to theRDAF’s 722 Squadron in sup-port of RDAF Tactical TroopTransport (TTT) operations,training exercises withinDenmark and possible futureuse in mission theatres globally.

Maintenance of the MX-15 systems will be per-formed by DALO at its existing maintenance facility in Frederikshavn, Denmark. “This order pairs the most modern TTT helicopterwith an advanced EO/IR sensor suite that providescrucial day/night imaging capabilities for a broadrange of missions,” said Paul Jennison, vice president of government sales and business development for L-3 WESCAM.
