FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Kia ora School Ball We are fortunate to have an excellent group of young people who attended our school ball last Friday night. They made the evening enjoyable by being responsible and respectful to all present whilst ensuring they had an enjoyable time. The credit for this also belongs to Mrs Flett and the organising year thirteen students. Thanks to the PTA, a lovely supper was provided. Thanks also to the adults who volunteered their time to provide security and supervision. Values This week we begin our respect and responsibility focus. The year thirteen students will issue students with a card, which can be redeemed for a Merit with a teacher, when they observe the values of respect or responsibility in action. This will operate for the next four weeks. Tena Koutou Tena Koutou Tena Koutou Katoa Wayne Edgar Principal

HABIT OF MIND Persistence is a Habit of Mind relevant to any goal we set,

particularly one that involves effort over time. Persistence means sticking to it until the goal is achieved. A recent example of this is our Year 13 group who persisted in achieving the goal of organising the school ball. They stuck to their plan of action thus achieving their goal of hosting an enjoyable ball for all who attended. Tokomairiro High School congratulates Year 13 for their persistence.

Quote of the week

“Consider the postage stamp: its usefulness consists in the ability to stick to one thing till it gets there.”

Josh Billings (1818—1885)

Southern Men clean up at

Cross Country Champs

Tokomairiro High School Student Liam Taal riding a Kawasaki KX250, finished off a great season of Cross Country Motorcycle racing by winning the South Island Senior title for under 250cc 4 stroke machines. Liam carded series results of 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 2 to take the trophy at the final round held near Cheviot, North Canterbury on May the 15th. Fellow Team Green Milton rider Dwain Shuttleworth of Waihola finished 3rd in this class with a 5 – 3 – 4 – 3 – 4 card. Remarkably all six South Island titles were won by riders from Otago and Southland, perhaps indicating the strength of the sport in this part of the island and boding well for the future. Liam also won the local Otago series with a 2 – 1 – 1 – 1 with Dwain in a close 2nd carding of 3 – 3 – 2 – 2. It was very near a clean sweep for Liam this year but a chain breakage in the last race of the Southland 3 race Series saw his lead disappear to finish 2nd in class with a 1 – 1 – 5 result. Dwain finished 3rd in Southland with good consistent placings of 4 – 5 – 3. Congratulations Liam and Dwain and good luck for next year. Cross Country racing requires skill, stamina, determination and team work in often demanding conditions and terrain. Very few races are postponed and competitors can expect to ride in all weather conditions for three hours or more over natural terrain marked out in a looped course of approximately 20km. The rider to complete the most loops within the allocated time is the winner. Team work is also very important as riders need refuelled (man and machine) in as short a time as possible in the designated pit area by their crews. Three riders can also race as a team and the team that completes the most laps within the time period wins, so it becomes very important to keep circulating even if you are well down the field, as the extra lap done can lift the team’s results.

Streets Alive with Children Milton streets were filled with the colourful sight of pupils from St Mary’s School on Wednesday, as they took part in an organised walk to celebrate Catholic Schools’ Day. The children were treated to ice blocks on the way. St Mary’s children are very proud to belong to Christian community of learners.

Rippa Rugby Tournament We sent four teams of Years 5 & 6 children to the Rippa Rugby Tournament held in Balclutha on Tuesday. The children all played really well. Saint Mary’s Team One, made it through to the semis and drew with Balclutha.

Curriculum - ANTARCTICA Willie Robertson was our Guest Speaker. He visited each classroom and spoke of his experiences on a ship that went to Antarctica. Science Club One of the children - Ben Pepper who has completed 9 activities in Home Chemistry, was awarded with his Science Badge at Assembly recently.

Tracer Dye Testing Clutha District Council advises that tracer dye will be discharged into the Tokomairiro River near Bruce Street, to test the new treated sewage outlet. The test will be done when river conditions are suitable, hopefully within the next few weeks. A harmless green dye will be used and some colour may be visible for a short time in the river below Milton, but there is no cause for alarm. Please direct any questions to Bill Iversen at Council's Balclutha office on 03 419 0200.

Bridge Report Result Autumn Pairs

Active 8 On Friday 14th May eight children form Room 6 went to Active 8. Active 8 is about sport and challenges. For one of the activities we had to go through a big web without touching the web. Some of the activities were outside and some were inside. Outside there was a huge course we had to do and some of it was really hard. The hardest thing was catching a golf ball in a cup. We had to do a cross country too. One of us had to read out a note. It had the instructions to the next activity. We had to finish the stage before we moved to a different activity. The human pyramid was challenging and fun. We all had a great time competing against the children from over thirty other schools.

Rippa Rugby Tournament On 18th May a South West Otago rippa rugby tournament was held in Balclutha and two teams from our school went down to be part of it. If you won the semi finals you would get to play at Carisbrook some time in October. In Team One there was Mathew Robinson, Liam Jeffery Lehane, Ethan Holden, Samuel Walker, Aaron Stevenson, Abbey Frost, Callum Kain, Samantha Herbert, and Rebbeca Hutton. In Team Two there was Kerrin Hall, Dylan Gold, Kaleb Hayes, Adorique May, Ayla Miller, Gareth Maybee, Atrael Thomas-Kavanagh, Reuben Wilson, and Stacey Sanders. Team One had two wins, drew one, and lost one. Team Two won three games and made it to the semi-finals but lost to Lawrence. It was great fun and the teachers and parents were very happy with us.
