Nintendo’s Next Gen console has been out for around two and a half months now and I think it’s time to let everyone know: What IS the WiiU is all about. Well, let’s start with the one thing that seems to be getting a lot of people confused, The WiiU IS NOT an add-on for the Wii. However you can use Wii remotes and Nunchuks with WiiU as well. The Console: The WiiU comes in two flavors an 8gig (white) and 32gig (black). The system itself looks a lot like the Wii 1 but rounded off, longer and a little heavier. As far as power goes it is a little more powerful than the PS3 and 360, although it may take a few years to see it. There is wire-less Wi-Fi for online play and other things such as…MiiVerse: Nintendo has created their own on-line space called “Nintendo Network” shared by both the WiiU and the 3DS. The MiiVerese however is WiiU’s version of Xbox live and PSN for lack of a better comparison. Think of MiiVerse as the Facebook/message board of Nintendo, where you can send messages to others about the games they may be playing at the time. Even pictures of games to give hints or just plan cool drawings can be shared. Along with MiiVerse, you have YouTube, Netflix, Am-azon instant Video, Hulu Plus and Nintendo TVii. This makes very good use of the controller that really makes the WiiU stand out.The Game Pad: By far this is one of the best

things about the WiiU. Most people look at the Game Pad and think “I’ll just play on that” thinking that they can walk off with the Game Pad, this is wrong. The Game Pad works just like any other controller for any other system-it does not work without the console. That being said, The Game Pad allows for gameplay us-ing both the screens (the Game Pad has a 6 six touch screen on it) which when used the right way can be really hot. For example; Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 can be played 2 player co-op with each person having a whole screen to themselves. The Game Pad can also be a universal remote that controls the TV, satellite, cable box and DVR. Nintendo TVii combines all of those under one umbrella and customizes them to you and your family’s need.

Now every console has its share a problems at launch, the 360 had the Red rings of death and the PS3 had the yellow light of death. They also had updates to make the systems better over time. Nintendo’s new console is no dif-ferent. The WiiU had lock up problems, which

Nintendo seems to have fixed for the most part. However the systems menu move very slowly, it’s not game braking, but it is annoy-ing. Thankfully this can be fixed with a system update….which is both a good and bad thing. This is a big mistake on Nintendo’s behave here, but in order to “complete” the WiiU you must download a huge update or you don’t get a lot of what the WiiU can do including backward compatibility, Nintendo TVii, WiiU chat, and the E-Shop. For those of us with WiFi internet that’s fine, but what about the people who don’t have it? The people Nintendo may be trying resell too?

I really love the WiiU and what it may do for Nintendo in the coming years; if you’re a Nin-tendo fan you probably already have one. If you’re not sure, hold out tell you see something on it you must have. But what I can’t wait to see is how well WiiU will stand up to PS4 and the Next Xbox… we may find out sooner than later.

Ladies, are you looking for designer labels at 60% or more off what you would pay retail? Well, look no further because The Closet Consignment Boutique in Uptown Greenville is the best kept secret in town. Specializ-ing in high-end women’s trendwear, shoes, handbags, and accessories, this hidden gem offers the fashion-conscious woman a fun place to find those special additions for their own closet without breaking the bank. Owned and operated by Paula Chrismon, a Washington native and East Carolina Uni-versity alumni, the unique concept for The Closet came about because she saw that women, like herself, were longing for a spe-cial kind of shopping experience that our area hadn’t previously offered. “Consign-ment shopping has become much more chic and mainstream than it used to be. It was my dream to create a one-stop-shop where ladies in Greenville and surrounding areas could enjoy shopping or consigning their luxury items in a fun and friendly environ-

ment. By opening The Closet, it has allowed me to marry my love for finding couture trea-sures as well as give the fashionistas of our community a label heaven to play in,” said Chrismon. Brands include Betsey Johnson, BCBG, Michael Kors, Coach, bebe, Ann

Taylor, Seven For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, Joe’s Jeans, Miss Me, Escada, Worth, Free People, Juicy Couture, Kate Spade, Trina Turk, and many more.

As the new soccer season is set to begin within the next month, the G-Vegas soccer team is taking on a good cause and pledged to support a local family struggling with the repercussions of a tragic diagnosis. It all began with a tummy ache and a fever on Christmas day last year. Little old Holly Larue wasn’t feeling well, and after her plethora of tests, blood transfusions, and trips to the doctor, the two-year old was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. What a

Christmas present, not just for her but for her parents as well. “Christmas is supposed to be a time of the year when children get presents, time off of school, and lots of playtime” said David Jury, one of the two captains of the

G-Vegas team. He immediately got involved and started collecting sponsors pledging their financial support, which is much needed as Larue’s parents not only have to live with the Larue’s tragic diagnosis but also with the bills that come with it. According to Larue’s dad Jason, “the family has received an overwhelming amount of support thus far. We are very touched and very grateful for the outreach and the love Larue received from the local community.” Nevertheless, much more help is needed. Larue’s mom Leilani updated her blog post recently and said that “the treatment is going well – Chemo is doing its job.” Thus, despite the tragic Christmas the family went through, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel and hope that little Larue will get her chance of enjoying a normal childhood eventually. The G-Vegas soccer team was founded on the premise of supporting local charities and helping people in need living in our immediate neighbor-hood. Last year, the team handed over a check for 500 dollars to the parents of Jasiah Macon, who suffers from post-birth renal

failure and requires daily dialysis. This year, “we want to double our effort, double our contribution, and continue our efforts” stated the team collectively. Please help support our cause! You can donate at any of the soccer games (schedule to be announced soon), by visiting the G-Vegas store on 5th Street, or by stopping by any of our sponsors listed below and saying: “Love for Larue – What can I do?” You can also pledge funds at:http://www.gofundme.com/1rb6cc

Any bartender will tell you that January is the slowest bar month of the year. Let’s face it, after all the hoop-la that surrounds Christ-mas and the New Year (not to mention the depleted funds and the large credit card bills that funded the hoop-la) by the time January rolls around we are spent, pooped, broke, hung over and cold. Fortunately, February and March are lurking right around the corner to breathe some much needed inspiration in our lives and the nightlife scene. So here is a broad spectrum of events in Greenville this month that you might be interested in. Peasants Pub, the new place in town with an old flavor, will be having live music almost ev-ery day of the week. On February 6, Lipbone Redding will be performing his own unique blend of R & B, Soul, Jazz, storytelling and his strange but cool signature mouth instruments (you just got to see it for yourself on that last one). I’m actually playing there the following night on Thursday Feb 7, so of course feel free to come to that. On Friday Feb 15, The” Big Something” will be returning to Greenville. These guys are a high energy Jam band that gives a hell of a show. They are the type of

Jam band that someone would like even if they were not a fan of the Jam band genre. So no matter what you’re into, you probably don’t want to miss this show. And on the first day of March, Rebekah Todd will be performing there with Jim Avett as well. Also, for any and all Dead heads and Phish heads in the area, you will want to make sure that you catch “Dubtown Cosmonauts” the following week on March 9. If you are a Dave Mathews fan, then you might be interested to know that “These Crowded Streets” will be performing at Tav-ern on 4th on February 9. Coincidently, that is also the birthday of Kevin Howard, so I can assure you that drinks will flow plentiful that night and a good time will be had by all. So feel free to swing by and be a part of that.

The Tipsy Teapot will be bringing us some more originality as usual. On Valentine’s Day they will have a “He Said, She Said” singer song writing night. I don’t have a lot of details about this event, but given the subject matter, I have a feeling that this will be a highly enter-taining evening. Also at the Tipsy Teapot, they have “Open Door Ministry” every Wednes-day along with square dancing on March 1.

On the other side of town, Tiebreakers has started having music on Wednesdays and Sundays now starting at 7:30. This is ideal if you have to work early the next day but you still want to go out and have some fun. Of course, I feel compelled to mention that I’ll be playing there on Sunday February 3....but I digress. The LIVE bar will be bringing us some good bands as usual. On February 8, the new Reg-gae band “Signal Fire” will be performing there. This band has some former members of 5th Generation and is quickly gaining mo-mentum around Greenville, Wilmington and Raleigh. Local legends Mac and Juice will also be returning to LIVE on Feb 23. These long time former residents of Greenville bring a feel good southern vibe on stage with both their music and personalities. Sometimes they appear as a duo and sometimes they have a backup band. If I’m not mistaken, this will be a full band show.

But no matter where you go or what you do, just remember to party responsibly. Nothing ruins a good night quite like a DUI.

Scarlett Walston (Greenville, NC) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play collegiate tennis at East Caro-lina University. Scarlett has spent the last two years as a full-time student at Heritage Academy on Hilton Head Island, S.C., where she is able to pursue her extra-curricular passion -- tennis. She spends half the day completing her rigorous academic requirements then spend the other half training at Van der Meer Ten-nis Academy. Scarlett also consid-ered offers from Davidson College, George Mason University, Duquesne University and Tufts University. From Scarlett: “I chose East Carolina University because, after weighing the pros and cons of all schools on my list, ECU seemed like the best fit for me and the place for which I could find the most success. The coach is nice and I love the girls on the team. I know that I will enjoy the ECU Pirates tennis program!”

I had the chance to talk with Local Artist “Down to this” I met them a few months back at Hooligans music hall in Jacksonville NC. With influences such as Lion heart, Stick to your guns, Metalllica, Slayer and so many more, These guys for sure have the biggest thing you need in the music seen, an open mind. Steve contacted me and wanted to do a feature on today’s music scene and support for local bands and venues. I re-member when I was in College you could go out seven nights a week in Greenville and always find somewhere that had live music, may it be Bolis on 5th street or my favorite and most missed Dr. UNKs. Now days good shows are hard to find. Carter tells us “nothing has changed in this scene in 20 years except the faces. In my opinion all genres experi-ence the same up and downs, dry spells. The all have this in common though, Crappy venues and Lack of support. It takes the individuals in the band to promote themselves, that being said the scene never “dies” to the die hard fan. The “high school” mentality will always exist and that’s sad because it deters a lot of folks from being supportive.”

The name “Down to this” Came from a continued frustration that Carter and Alan had with numerous bands that the had played with. Delusional and self centered attitudes plus misfortune lead them down the path the are on now. “Down to this in short means learn from our mistakes and take it as far as we possibly can” explained Carter. When I asked about the local support scene the had some very strong opinions. “There is not a lot for non-conventional Genres such as metal, hardcore, punk etc. DJ Ry Ry, from Hooligans is by far the best pro-moter in the area, he is very knowledgeable and gives credit where its due. He doesn’t care about playing it safe or kissing up to his bud-dys band for scene points and doesn’t pander to the lowest common denominator for mainstream appeal. And if a touring band is making waves in larger markets and wants to come through and are connected to other bands people want to see he puts them on a show. He treats everyone like family, and that’s how it should be done.”Alan added “younger generations need to stand up and be leaders for their music scene.”

Hooligans Music hall was an overall favorite venue for the band, a few other great places mentioned though out the interview brought up some sad memories of lost Venues such as the Brewery in Raleigh. “Tipsy Tea pot in Greenville, NC and The Rock shop in Fayetteville, NC are great supporters” Steve said. “ A good venue needs a good lineup including a great promoter, sounds, lights and a great sound man. Not one who is jealous of bands that had to give up his dreams in the 80s. you know who you are suck it (laughs) They have performed with Hed p.e. and Nonpoint (which I featured that show a few months back in gvegas magazine) both at Hooligans music hall and by far have been their biggest shows to date. Eddie was in another band that opened for Mushroom head at Hooligans and it was sold out. “Follow your guts, not the trends. Focus on being the best at what you do. People will see how legit you are and either they’ll help you or hate you.”

Carter added “ and if your local scene doesn’t get you, Eff em. Play for those that do. Either way you have made an impression Give away our music to anyone that will listen, focus on selling merch in general. I don’t care what anyone says there is nothing like having hundreds of people singing your music wearing your tshirts. Always a well needed Ego boost.” Steve advised to “stay with i”. It will be hard at first to get good shows, but it will come in time” Eddie agreed “Like Steve said stay with it your gonna have ups and downs, and only the strong will survive... esp. in the music scene”

I got on the subject of signing with a record company and even though I heard them throw out names such as Bridge 9, Sumerian, Stillborn and Mega Force. “If Megaforce started talking to us I’d run for it and never look back.” Excitedly said Eddie. But overall they had one in mind.... “My own.” Carter was brutally honest “I don’t want to have to answer to some douche bag that pretends to care about my music. I don’t want to be pressured into touring and selling units (although that would be nice) I would love for DOWN TO THIS to have full control.”. Steve (laughs) “I’m not gonna lie if Sumerian asked us to hop on the roster, I wouldn’t be upset.”

Three to Five years from now I would like to see Music and my career, right now its more of an obsession , and a curse. I’ll Still be doing mu-sic even it that doesn’t happen” according to Carter. Steve Hopes to be signed to some record label making tons of money and Eddie would Just be satisfied not paying Locally in North Carolina by then. “I feel the local scene just doesn’t get enough support because nobody really knows what to do with it right now.” They Recently Just joined the stage with HATEBREED, at (where else of course) Hooligans Music Hall.

In Closing I asked them if they could add anything to this article what would they say? ” If you can’t be like a family and music isn’t part of who you are then your from the start. We can’t afford to be cliquey, we are ALL in this local scene together. Lets make it the best we ever have had.” replied Carter. “ Steve, Alan, and Eddie are like my brothers. Sure we make each other angry on the regular and call BS on each other. But we are there for each other when we can be. (laughing) I love these Morons.” Steven added “Keep Supporting your local scene, If you stop supporting it. It will fade away and die out everywhere. Keep checking out new music even if its not your seen, try your hardest to make it out to shows. Open your ears and keep live music alive at all costs”

Not since John Wilkes Booth has there been a manhunt more relevant to the American people than the search for Osama Bin Laden. In Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty we are shown the CIA agents behind the hunt, up close and personal.

From this we find a picture of a different kind of hero, one who will do anything to get the job done. While at first glance through the trailer, audiences may have gotten the impres-sion of a gritty, almost somber action film, but upon viewing it becomes less gritty and even less sentimental. Jessica Chastain plays Maya, a CIA agent who has been hunting Osama since the 9/11 attacks. Along with Dan (Ja-son Clarke) and Jessica (Jennifer Ehle), Maya is exposed to several torture methods used on terrorists. The complete exploitation of morality for val-ued information becomes one of the many nec-essary evils stressed upon in the film.

The broken waste of interrogating rooms and simple stagnant pacing during the torture scenes were truly harrowing. But the film is less about finding Osama as it is about the toll it takes upon Maya having to filter, not only her complex wheel of emotions, but dealing with the waiting for those in charge to take action.

Be certain this movie does anything but sit around for too long. Between Maya’s unrelent-ing confidence and Dan’s threatening yet play-ful demeanor there is a glimmer of great char-acter pairing yet this is never focused upon.

Instead the story shifts to Maya’s journey. While there is great pacing often it appears as if there is much left out with all the scene jumps. With time being so chopped up it makes us wish, why couldn’t they have just skipped to where every-thing got heavy? Without this path though we may not have gotten some of the more deep-ening character development, which is good.

Notwith-standing the fact t h a t , u n l i k e B o o t h , t h e hunt for Osama took a decade, also. Overall Chastain’s performance is excel-lent as well as Kyle Chandler playing Maya’s boss-you-love-to-hate. Chris Pratt of Parks and Rec makes a bulky and carefree cameo along with James Gandolfini as CIA director.

Zero Dark Thirty tells a real story about the measures it takes to purse evil and hownon-heroic it can be.
