Graduation Speaker Biography

Dear graduates,

What a year we have had. Just about 14 months ago, all of our lives were turned upside down. You found yourself thrust into an online learning environment while trying to maintain good grades as you adapted to significant lifestyle changes. I heard one faculty member say, “this year’s graduates really have heart.” That struck me, and I spent some time thinking about what that means.

As I reflect on the latter part of your time at Zane State, I can’t help but feel optimistic about what you will achieve in the future. You overcame and conquered all that was thrown your way due to the unpredictable, global pandemic. I see your success in making it through to earning your degree or certificate as an indication of what’s to come throughout your career.

I encourage you to apply the same determination that you have exercised already into the next stage of your life. You, the graduating class of 2021, have the skills — and the heart — needed to make the future more secure and a brighter place. All eyes are on you, as you are our future. Just remember your Zane State College family is here to support you along the way. We are all so proud of your accomplishments.

Congratulations,

Chad Brown, Ph.D. President

Graduation RegaliaCandidates for graduation taking part in the commencement ceremony wear a traditional academic gown of black. Black gowns are worn by faculty as well, and their academic dress may include a hood with colors that signify their degree and institution colors. Those with doctoral degrees and members of the Board of Trustees feature three velvet bars on each sleeve and one vertical panel on each side of the gown; the president of the college is adorned with four velvet bars. The mortarboard cap worn by candidates is the traditional style used for the associate degree with a long tassel that is fastened to the top middle of the cap. The color of the tassel represents the discipline studied. Doctoral degree holders, Board of Trustee members, and the president wear a velvet tam with a tassel. Graduate candidates enter the ceremony with the tassel on the right side of the cap and move it to the left as a group after the degrees have been awarded to symbolize that they have officially become alumni of Zane State College.

Some graduate candidates wear items to recognize their special involvements and achievements. Gold stoles and gold tassels indicate members of Phi Theta Kappa, the two-year national academic honorary society. White stoles represent those who are members of the TRIO Student Support Services Program. Those wearing a medallion are presidential scholars and have earned the highest academic honor. Candidates wearing a gold cord are graduating with honors; those wearing a silver cord have been recognized for various achievements. Associate degree graduates who will graduate from high school later this spring have a double-twisted blue and white cord. Military veterans wear red, white, and blue cords.

Alma MaterIn the heartland of Ohio is a place so dear to me.Near the hills of Appalachia, there my future dreams I see.Caring mentors, so devoted, help to guide and show the way. Friendships made there last a lifetime. Cherished memories are made. Ever forward, sharing knowledge, making dreams and hopes come true. Building pathways to the future. Zane State College, we thank you.- Composed by Stephen (Steve) Morrison, Arrangement by Charles Savage

Chain of OfficeThis symbolic article signifies both the past and present of Zane State College. The pendent features the College seal, which was drawn by ZSC alumnus Christopher Burkhardt, ‘16. Within the seal, the book represents knowledge, the mortarboard stands for achievement, the Y-Bridge symbolizes the relationship with the local community, and the state flag represents the College’s connection to Ohio. Together everything results in progress.

Further adorning the chain is an engraving depicting each ZSC president. The chain is worn by the Zane State College president at official ceremonies.

Ceremonial MaceOver the centuries, what started as a weapon evolved into a symbol of authority. The Zane State College Ceremonial Mace is crafted from dark walnut with antique silver engraved accents. The mace head features the ZSC seal on each side and lists the name of each College president.

The Faculty Senate Chair opens official ceremonies by placing the mace in a holder for all to see.
