About the Library
Searching the Catalogue:
Your search should begin at the 'Contents' page. The catalogue is divided into ten sections or
'Parts', with (where appropriate) sub-sections headed 'Books' and 'Articles'. Under these headings,
books and articles are listed alphabetically by author; simply scroll through the library document to
find the page or 'Part' you require. 'Part One' to 'Part Four' progress chronologically from 3000BC
to the 19th century, and correspond roughly to the 'ancient', 'medieval', 'early modern', and 'modern'
periods of history. 'Part Five' is dedicated to the 20th century, and deals mainly with the two World
Wars. Each part is prefaced by an 'Introduction' which offers a general indication of the content of
that particular section. Biographies or biographical sketches of particular individuals are listed in
'Part Six' (pre 20th century), and 'Part Seven' (20th century). The library holds also several 'Special
Collections', which refer to a specific topic, geographic area, or collection of books/articles by a
particular author or institution. The subject matter of each individual collection is as listed under
'Part Eight' of the 'Contents' page. 'Part Nine' lists a number of pamphlets or special publications
which the library holds on a variety of topics. 'Part Ten', currently under construction, will contain
- where available - copies of previous talks by members of the History Group. If you still cannot
find the book or article you want, or are unsure as to the precise content of a particular book or
article, contact the HG Library at the email address given in the 'Requesting/returning a book or
article' section.

Introduction
The period 3000BC to the 10th Century AD is popularly known as 'Ancient' history (3000BC-
c.500AD); culminating in the 'Dark' or 'Early Middle Ages' (c.500-c.1000}. For those new to a
study of the period, Oliver's History of Ancient Britain, and Schama's History of Britain are good
starting points. Further afield, themes range from Aldred's Tutankhamun's Egypt [1333-1324BC]
to Forte's Viking Empires of the 8th to the 11th centuries AD. War and rebellion are prominent
topics, and there are notable features on prominent leaders and warlords such as Alexander the
Great [326-323BC], Hannibal [247-c.181BC], Boudicca [d.61AD], and Charlemagne [c.742-
814AD]. The influence of the ancient civilisations of Egypt, Greece and Rome on Western society,
culture and religion are not neglected, however, and (for example) the series of articles by Brandon
on the development of early Christianity are an increasingly rare and important resource.

Introduction
In general, the five hundred or so years between the 11 th and mid-16th centuries constitute 'Medieval'
history: commonly, however, the period is divided into the 'Early' (11 th – late 13th C.) and 'Later
Middle Ages' (late 13th - mid-16th C.). Prominent amongst the subjects discussed here are the
Crusades, and the cultural renaissance in architecture, art, music and literature which dominated the
later period. Given the often troubled relationship between Britain and France, it is perhaps
unsurprising that the history of these two countries - and that of warfare and rebellion - forms the
bulk of the collection in this section, but there are discussions on subjects as diverse as (for
example) the Spanish conquest of the Incas, Japanese civilisation in the 11th century, and medieval
Russia.

Introduction
The main subjects of study in this section are politics and society in ''Elizabethan' and 'Stuart'
England1 from the mid-16th to the early 18th century (commonly referenced as the 'Early Modern'
period) with particular emphasis on the English Civil War. Nevertheless, there are detailed
discussions of events elsewhere in Europe during the years in question, such as Schama's
examination of Dutch society and culture, The Embarrassment of Riches; Knecht's French
Religious Wars; and articles by Chandler on the Wars of the Spanish Succession.

Introduction
As is the case with all historical 'ages', there is no precise line to mark when 'Early Modern' history
ends, and 'Modern' history begins. The benchmark adopted here is the American Revolution of
1765-1783, which lit the fuse for later political and social upheaval in Europe, most notably in 1789
and 1848. A 'Special Collection' of books and articles on revolution and civil war in France and
America in the late 18th and 19th centuries are listed elsewhere (see p.42), but good general
assessments of the period to be found here are Hobspawn's The Age of Revolution: McGraw's
France: 1815-1914; and Mann's History of Germany since 1789; whilst the progress of the
industrial revolution at home is documented in Reid's England: 1868-1914. Elsewhere, a wide
range of topics include the colonisation of Australia; the 'opening-up' of the American west; and the
development – not to mention exploitation – of India as the 'jewel in the crown' of the British
Empire.

Introduction
If, in Hobspawn's famous phrase, the 19th century was the 'Age of Revolution', then the first half of
the 20th century was correctly identified by Marwick as the era of 'Total War'. The origins of the
Great War of 1914-1918 remain a matter of heated debate; but whatever its causes, the conduct of
the war and the failure to achieve a just settlement at Versailles in 1919 led to revolution in Russia
and Germany, the rise of Stalin and Hitler, and a second world conflict in 1939-1945. These
revolutions and wars, together with their causes and consequences, are the subject of study in this
section.

The John and Pauline Tonks Collection
49
HG Library Catalogue
Introduction
In January 2016, the History Group was pleased to accept a collection of books and genealogicaltables from the estate of John and Pauline Tonks, who died recently within a few months of eachother. John and Pauline had been members of Get Together since coming to France in 2007,following their retirement and subsequent marriage in England. Both had a longstanding interest ingenealogy, and as well as running courses on the subject for GT members, John had traced his ownfamily back as far as King Canute! A particular interest was the family trees of British andEuropean royal families and their interconnections, and thus the following 'special collection'contains a substantial number of books and journals on monarchs and prominent public figures oftheir day. The History Group is delighted to receive this kind donation from John and Pauline, who – as well as being members of GT - were also members of Les Jardiniers du Poitou gardeningclub, and active in raising funds for the Combined Services Support Group.
