November was a busy month for our cadets. On 7 November our Raider team participated in the 4th DBE Virginia State Raider Meet held annually at Pocahontas State Park. There were approximately 50 teams in attendance. Our 2 raider teams competed against teams who are nationally ranked. Although we did not bring home a trophy, our teams performed exceptionally well, especially since it rained the entire event. Our next team to step up in November was the drill team. They had two competitions on back to back Saturdays. Petersburg hosted their drill meet at Fort Lee on No- vember 14th. This is currently the only competition we attend that has a Let 1(1st year cadets) event. For the first time performing our cadets did well by winning: 3rd place Regulation Armed Squad, 2nd place Academic/ Leadership Bowl, 2nd place Regulation Armed Pla- toon and 2nd place LET1 only Un- armed Regulation Squad. The following Saturday, we re- turned to Fort Lee for Prince George High School’s Drill Com- petition. There we placed 3rd in Inspection and 3rd in Regulation Armed Squad. As our veteran drill team members graduate in June, we are hoping the new team members will step up to continue our success at competitions. The Air Rifle team has been lim- ited to postal competitions (after firing, targets are mailed to spon- sors) due to restrictions at the Na- tional Guard Armory, where our local league normally competed. On 5 December we did however compete in a “shoulder to shoul- der” competition at the Wythe- Jackson Rifle Meet. Our varsity and junior varsity teams dominated by taking 1st and 2nd place respec- tively against fie other teams. The female members showed their “girl power” as follows: Cadet Joh- nay Person was the overall indi- vidual winner; cadet Brookelyn Rimel took 1st place in the prone position and Cadet Dia- mond Jackson placed 1st in the standing position. In keeping with the Profes- sional learning Communities philosophy of our school, JROTC, Drama and Chorus co- hosted a veterans’ show on 21 January 2016. We invited veter- ans from McGuire VA Hospital as well as local military veter- ans. Sergeant First Class (Ret) and Coach Bob Weaver closed the show with a tear-jerking per- formance of “Taps”. After the show Cadets spoke to the veter- ans in order to learn more about them and to thank them for their service.
