After School Matters provides thousands of Chicago teens the opportunity to explore their passions and develop their talents through world-class after school and summer programs across Chicago each year.

FY2018 Annual Report

Teen Voices MATTER

TEEN VOICES MATTER

Between July 2017 and June 2018, After School

Matters provided more than 17,000 Chicago teens

hundreds of after-school and summer program

opportunities in the arts, communications and

leadership, sports and STEM all across the

city. Our largest summer program session ever,

coupled with thousands of teens speaking out for

peace through community-based programs and

on the national stage, bookend a transformational

year that showcased the impact of our programs

and the power of our teens’ voices.

More than 90 percent of our teens report feeling

safe and supported by both program instructors

and their peers, and After School Matters is a

proven violence prevention solution. The March

for Our Lives rally in Washington, D.C. and the

attention it brought to youth voices nationwide

is an important reminder of the power of our

young people.

After School Matters works every day to stand

strong as ambassadors for local teens as we help

them develop their passions and find their futures.

There is no better investment in the future of our

city than in its youth.

Powered by Chicago CRED with a curriculum and training developed by the Civic Leadership Foundation, this six-week program provided meaningful experiences for more than 1,100 Chicago teens across 21 community areas to counter violence through positive contributions to their communities.

Teens learned about the peace-building process, reflected on their communities, recognized their potential as peacemakers, and designed a project to implement within their neighborhoods to spread the message of peace.

After School Matters teens traveled to Washington, D.C. in March 2018 to participate in the March For Our Lives rally calling for stronger gun control legislation following the shooting massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that killed 17 students.

Mya Middleton, 16, from Chicago’s Austin neighborhood was invited to speak about her experience of coming face-to-face with the barrel of a gun at the age of 13. Her speech was broadcast across national TV networks and to the tens of thousands who gathered on the National Mall.

Together we can make sure that what happened to me, the students in Parkland, and to the individuals who stand here now does not repeat itself to other people. We deserve safer schools, safer classrooms, safer streets, and a safer place for us to learn and survive. We deserve better, because I believe that we are the future.

— Mya Middleton, excerpt from her March For Our Lives speech

NEW TEEN-CENTRIC BUILDING ANNOUNCED ON CHICAGO’S SOUTH SIDE

In June, After School Matters, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Park District announced plans to develop a brand-new 24,000-square-foot programming space at Gately Park in Chicago’s Pullman community. This new building represents our third dedicated neighborhood space for Chicago teens with Gallery37 downtown and the Lutz Center in Belmont Cragin preceding it.

In November 2017, After School Matters partnered with the University of Chicago’s France Chicago Center to send 15 teens and three instructors to Paris for eight days. The group explored the city and attended an interdisciplinary colloquium on the contributions of Chicagoans—particularly from the West and South Side communities—to our global society.

At the colloquium, teens deepened their understanding of the cultural impact African Americans from Chicago had on the world. As part of the conference, the teens performed music by Chicago jazz, blues and gospel artists, concluding with their rendition of “Sweet Home Chicago.”

AFTER SCHOOL MATTERS GOES TO PARIS!

“When I arrived in Paris, I felt like it was the beginning of new opportunities.” — Quentin S., 17

“The indoor track at Gately Park will create much-needed opportunities for the

Pullman and Roseland communities to stay safe, to stay engaged and to stay on

track to a brighter future. It will be because of After School Matters, there will be

all other types of activities, and mentoring, to make sure that they are getting

the academic support as well as the athletic support to achieve their dream.”

— Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel

This space will be housed within a new, world-class athletic facility built by the Chicago Park District. After School Matters is enormously grateful to our Board Chair Mellody Hobson and the George Lucas Family Foundation for their generous lead gift to make this new After School Matters space possible. This project is crucial to After School Matters’ longer-term growth strategy of replicating our model of dedicated teen programming spaces, particularly in underserved communities.
