    Chapter 5 Usage and Maintains of print head

    5.1 Usage of Xaar Printer

    1Flush humectants out of print head To moisturize print head, lots of humectants are injected into the head before it is used. The

    humectants must be flushed out for the first using. Before fix the head on the print head frame, do the

    steps as follows: Joint a filter on the In-tube of the head, and then joint an injector--which fills with

    flush solution--on the filter. Inject 10-20 ml flush solution to the head to eject the humectants inside.

    Then fill the head with flush solution to dissolve the humectants completely within 5-10 minutes. Finally,

    flush the head with about 30ml flush solution to eliminate the humectants completely.

    Make sure to operate on a stable and clean platform.

    Cautions:

    1. Clean platform for convenient operation;

    2. Dont touch the surface of head and socket with hand;

    3. Clean the filter with flush solution;

    4. Connect a tube on the exit of the head to prevent ink flowing into the socket;

    5. Dont touch the surface of head with other objects;

    6. Be careful to distinguish In tube and Out tube of the head;

    7. Eject flush solution from the nozzles with strength no more than 0.3 kg. (It is better to hold the

    injector with single hand and push it with the same thumb.)

    2Extrude air from the print head After fixing the head on the head frame (be cautious of the in tube and out tube). Remove the Cap

    from the Out tube; positive-pressure clean to fill the head with ink till ink streams out from nozzles.

    During the process air is extruded completely from the head.

    3Moisturize print head surface After extruding air from the head, cover the Cap on the Out tube. Positive-pressure clean again until

    ink streams out of the nozzles, then scrub the head surface with a dry clean stick to form a protecting

    layer of ink on the head surface. The ink on the surface will stream into the nozzles because of

    negative pressure.

    Notes:

    Never scrub the head surface when head surface is dry, for that will orient air into the

    nozzles and shape bubbles in the pipelines and affect the printing quality.

  • FY 3316B Operation manual

    - - 16

    4Test printing Design some color blocks as 20x20cm with some image operating software, and set color luminance as

    100%, 50% and 10%. Print the color blocks under test mode and check the print result. If the print

    result is normal which means no ink-break and no ink spots on the mediums, the printer can work

    normally.

    Figure 5-1 color blocks for test printing

    5.2 Cleanness and maintenance of the print head

    1. Ink replacing

    Flush the print head with the original ink first, and then flush it again with new flush solution, which

    matches the new ink.

    2. Print head cleaning

    If low quality printing takes place, a positive-pressure cleaning is proper for the head. After positive

    pressure cleaning, scrub the head surface with a dry clean stick to stop ink streaming from the nozzles. Be sure

    not to use a stick with flush solution to scrub the head surface, otherwise, the flush solution will be siphoned

    into the nozzles.

    3. Moisturize print head

    Use wet keeping frame to moisturize the head if the printers is left unused. Put a clean non-woven fabric

    on the sponge of wet keeping frame and drop some flush solution on it because the sponge usually has dust on

    it. If no wet keeping frame, adhere a clean non-woven fabric with some flush solution on the print head and

    wrap it with a fresh keeping polyester film.

The satisfactory printing result could be carried out after the calibration.

    5 Adjust Mode Select This option is for the printing calibration of the printer. It is suggested to print on 180dpi as the option after the printer is installed. If a better resolution image is required after the calibration, set this option as the expected resolution. The system would automatically create the calibration value which can be used in practical. (In practical operation, more small calibrations might be needed according to the mechanical status)

    1-3-9

    6 Clear Parameter Setting There are two options at the setting of cleaning. The operator could decide if the cleaning would be proceeded during the printing by choose Clear in Print or No Clear. The Freq Number setting would be valid only when Clear in Print is selected. The unit for setting the frequency is: PASS. The setting scope is: 1PASS-255PASS

    7 Color Parameter Setting To print color bar during the printing process could protect the printing heads better and avoid the defects caused by abnormal temperature, dryness and different printing color. This setting is composed by three parts which controls printing the color bar or not, the position of the color bar printed , the width of the color bar and the distance from the color bar to the image.

    In the setting of position, there are three options: No Color Bar Right Color Bar and Left Color Bar . When no color bar is selected, the other two parameter such as width and to Pic length will not be valid. Width: to setup the general width of the color bar. The system would set width of bar for each color automatically and equally from six colors or four colors. To Pic Length: to Setup the distance between the bar and the image. The option is designed for the users who need different width of the space for the white edge. The unit of the width and length is centimeter.

    8 Print Head Group Setting: This option is applicable for the principia of the compatibleness to the lower lever from the higher level. That means the system could maximum apply four groups, 16 pieces of print heads. It is can be used in the 16 print heads system from 1 group to 4 groups. If 4 groups of print heads are applied in the 12 print heads system, the unexpected result would occur. When the chosen groups are less then the print heads, the group of the print heads which are at the backside would not working. Suggestion: Apply the same groups of print head as the system to ensure a more convenience operation and maintenance.

    9 Save the setting The setting would be valid after click Save button to save the parameters, otherwise the previous setting would be applied in the printing.

    - - 29

    1-3-11

    Same color print heads calibration is for calibrating the print head used in the same color. The calibration ensures the vertical alignment in the printing: see the figure as below:

    There should be two same drawing after the printing test. According to the difference of the mechanical status, the two calibration values might be different. In the drawing which was printed from left to right, check the number underneath the lines, for example K1 and K2, which are exactly aligned. This number would be the calibration value for the K1 and K2 alignment. Add this value to the value in the box at the left side (see the figure

  • FY 3316B Operation manual

    - - 30

    below). For example, the calibration value is 4, and the value in the box is 284, so you need to enter 288 (284+4=288) for the calibration. And add the value of the drawing printed from right to left, to the box at the right side. The calibration method for other color (C,M,Y) and other print heads (2-3, 3-4) is same.

    1-3-12

    11 Auto Adjust by 180DPI Under this function, the calibration value of 360dpi or 720dpi would be automatically made from the parameters in the 180dpi calibration mode. The value should close to the parameter of the best printing result, but different mechanical status might need different small calibrations.

    12 Save Param Save Param need to be clicked after the settings to activate, otherwise the previous parameter would be used while printing.

    13 Reset Param When the confusion of the settings is occurred, to click use Reset Param to return the previous saved settings.

  • FY 3316B Operation manual

    - - 31

    1-3-13

    The purpose of this calibration is to put the different color on the same position, so to print the perfect image. See the figure below (according different colors for 4 color and 6 color printer, the alignment are KC, CM, MY, YLc, LcLm)

    1-3-14

    There should be two same drawing after the printing test. According the difference of the mechanical status, the two calibration value might be different. In the drawing which was printed from left to right, check the number underneath the lines which are exactly aligned. This number would be the calibration value. Add this value to the value in the box at the left side. And add the value of the drawing printed from right to left to the box at the right side. Then save the parameter.

    14) Auto Adjust by 180DPI Under this function, the calibration value of 360dpi or 720dpi would be automatically made from the parameters

    16) Reset Param When the confusion of the settings is occurred, to click use Reset Param to return the previous saved settings.

    4 Double Direct Adjust

    1-3-15

    Double Direct Adjust would ensure to print a perfect image from both directions at the different speed. When the speed setting is changed, the calibration is required to print best result. When the printer stays at the same speed, the calibration might be needed regularly according the mechanical status.

    There should be two same drawing printed. According the difference of the mechanical status, the two calibration value might be different. Check the number corresponding with the lines which are exactly aligned. This number would be the calibration value. Add this value to the value in the box. There would be 4 drawing for KCMY four colors. Under the ideal status, the calibration value should be same for each color. If not, more adjustment the mechanical parts and position of the print heads are needed. The unit of the parameter is DPI.

    17) Save Param Save Param need to be clicked after the settings to activate, otherwise the previous parameter would be used while printing.

    18) Reset Param When the confusion of the settings is occurred, to click use Reset Param to return the previous saved settings.

    5 Vert Motor Adjust

    1-3-17

    Vert Motor Adjust is very important in printing an image. A precise calibration ensures to print the exactly size of the image designed by the user and the quality of the image. But because of the different working status and duty time of the print heads, the thin lines fired by jet orifices might be deflected, so the calibration would not be perfectly correct. After the setting, the user should make some more small calibrations by checking the practical printing result.

    There should be two same drawing printed. According the difference of the mechanical status, the two calibration value might be different. Check the number corresponding with the lines which are exactly aligned. This number would be the calibration value. Add this value to the value in the box. The unit of the parameter is DPI
