College Bound Opportunities (CBO) continues to reach new milestones with each passing year. Beginning with a single student in 2006, CBO now supports 122 scholars in college and high school. More importantly, our scholars are fulfilling their dreams of earning college degrees. Less than three years ago, no CBO scholars had yet graduated from college. Today, we are proud to report that 22 of our scholars have earned college degrees! YOU are making this possible!

Without your support, most of these students would likely not attend, let alone graduate from college. In fact, more than 90% of the scholars in the program are the first in their families to attend college. Through a combination of student support programs, financial assistance, and one-to-one mentor relationships, CBO is helping more local youth gain access to college. And with each college degree earned, future generations will be affected. Your impact is multiplied with every student who graduates!

But even with this extraordinary growth, CBO still must turn away more than 50% of the student applicants each year due to funding constraints. Our students are funded entirely by private donations from the community. We cannot overstate the importance of your involvement. We need to be able to take every qualified student. With your continued support, we will.

90% of CBO Scholars are the first in their families to go to college.The Mentoring Program is the heart of CBO and the number one driving factor behind the successful graduation of our scholars. The need for a mentor is a critical factor in determining which students would benefit most from the CBO program. Having an adult figure to guide each student through the college process has proven to be a significant factor for performing at higher levels and staying on track to graduate. This has contributed to 97% of CBO scholars graduating from college.

More than 125 volunteers serve as mentors to CBO Scholars and devote six years to their guidance. Each mentor helps his or her student apply for colleges, fill out the FAFSA student aid forms, research scholarship opportunities, go on college visits, and identify colleges that are the right match for their high achieving abilities. Once in college, the mentors provide the necessary emotional support for the scholars to adapt to college life. Each mentor lives and breathes the program for six years, and truly transforms the life of an individual.

“Being a mentor allows me to make a huge difference in the life of an exceptional student,” said Jonathan April, a CBO mentor, “not only making an impact on this generation but on generations that follow.”

Our Mission

College Bound Opportunities (CBO) mentors economically disadvantaged students

to unleash their potential, graduate college, pursue meaningful professions,

and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

From College to Career: A Scholar’s Journey Seven years ago, Arturo Vergara was a junior in high school and started thinking about the college application process. Because he would be the first in his family to attend college, his parents did not have the experience to help. And funds were limited. Fortunately, Arturo learned of a new college assistance program that had been formed the prior year. He did not know much about College Bound Opportunities, but the financial assistance offered by the program was a huge draw. Upon being accepted into the program, Arturo would learn that CBO was much, much more.

Like his fellow CBO scholars, Arturo was paired with a mentor to help him on his journey. With the help of his mentor and CBO’s resources, Arturo was accepted into the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and earned his college degree in 2012.

Arturo’s journey with CBO continues today even after his college graduation. “CBO has provided me with some much needed guidance and assistance in merging into the world after college,” said Arturo. Taking advantage of career prep programs through CBO, such as resume writing and interviewing workshops and culminating with an internship at Old World Industries, Arturo gained crucial professional experience making it possible for him to begin his career with BMO Harris Bank this year. Arturo continues to advocate on behalf of CBO and be an example for other scholars. In fact, his younger brother, Salvador, joined the program in 2012 and followed in his footsteps to the University of Illinois. Another journey begins.
