Federal City is a joint initiative by the State of Louisiana, the local government, and the private sector to develop a landmark sustainable city-within-a-city on the site of a former military base located on the west bank of the Mississippi River in New Orleans, Louisiana. This exciting pilot project rethinks the traditional U.S. military base, weaving commercial and residential functions back into the urban fabric. FutureProof was brought in at the early stages of the Federal City plan to act as sustainability consultants during the master planning process and in the ongoing role of Owner’s Sustainability Representative and LEED Consultants. Part of their responsibility as systems designers is implementing campus-wide strategies and designing and implementing pilot projects that showcase the overarching sustainability goals of the project. These include a district stormwater system, part of an Integrated Water Management Strategy, and a site-wide energy conservation strategy that includes development of a smart microgrid and building performance targets. In addition, they have developed an Owner’s Program of Requirements that incorporates Federal, LEED and Net Zero energy requirements and provides a framework for how individual projects will contribute to the overall site objectives.

Federal City Marine Forces Reserve Complex: Report on Sustainable Design Elements, authored by FutureProof in May 2009. Analyzed the following aspects of this complex in support of the implementation of sustainable design elements: Site, Water Usage, Energy, Materials, Interior Environment. Suggested elements included: cisterns, biocells, vegetated swales, permeable concrete, native landscaping, transportation, water-efficient appliances, LED, fiber-optic lighting and other daylighting techniques, high-recycled-content materials, commissioning. Feasibility study for LEED platinum (costs/benefit analysis).

Integrated water management strategySt. Bernard Parish, the East Banks of Orleans and Jefferson Par-ishes

Projects

FutureProof is part of the international design and engineering team that is developing the region’s first integrated sustainable and comprehensive water management strategy (WMS). The WMS will develop a comprehensive and sustainable approach to water management in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard Parishes. The WMS is focused on sustainable solutions for stormwater, wastewater, groundwater, flood control, and water infrastructure. Currently, flooding occurs during normal rainfall, and much of the geographic area of St. Bernard Parish and the east banks of Orleans and Jefferson Parish are dependent on large scale pumping systems which are susceptible to failure. Existing infrastructure is costly and often divides neighborhoods and communities of southeastern Louisiana. The WMS will be implemented with $1.7 million of funds granted to Greater New Orleans, Inc. from the State of Louisiana’s Office of Community Development – Disaster Recovery Unit, over a three year period beginning June 21, 2010. The WMS will employ state-of-the-art, sustainable approaches to infrastructure and development that mitigate flood risks, apply integrated water resources management, assists in securing future infrastructure funding, and seeks to yield economic value and solid return-on-investment on infrastructure improvements.

The Mesquite Mine has been strongly committed to deploying solar energy as part of its long term sustainability initiative and life-of-mine transition. FutureProof was integral to the design team implementing strategic solar and renewable energy planning for the mine. Additionally, FutureProof developed mine efficiency standards and recommendations for existing operations with return on investment within three years. In the 2011 evaluation of the property, five solar deployment opportunities were identified as immediately available for development totaling over 9 MW of solar potential and a return on investment of less than seven years.

Landscape ArchitectsHabitat Restoration

For its new headquarters at Michoud, the US Coast Guard sought to create a LEED certified project that would include a sustainable, regenerative native landscape. The design utilizes 100% native species to reintroduce the original Cajun Prairie eco-sytstem which was lost due to earlier development. Because of the use of native species and strategic placement of bioswales, the project requires no irrigation and has minimal maintenance requirements. It was constructed at a cost comparable to that of traditional landscape designs. The landscape contributed 8 LEED points, bringing the project to LEED Silver.

Landscape Architecture

FutureProof with Ken Smith, Landscape Architect designed Planter’s Grove -- a Central City pocket park -- to mitigate local flooding, improve water quality, and provide a widely appreciated amenity to the host community. The Grove, featuring creative use of reclaimed materials, native plants, and 16 Cypress trees, was brought to life by Planters partner The Corps Network, The National Member Organization of the Service and Conservation Corps, with Limitless Vistas, Inc. and the Louisiana Green Corps/ARC of Greater New Orleans.

FutureProof designed and supervised installation of a flood-mitigating neighborhood feature in the Ninth Ward. The one acre engineered ecosystem included wetland and micro-forest features that retained and lifted water. The system enhances local infrastructure while nursing the protective urban canopy and advancing integrated pest management. An extensive stakeholder involvement program was used to engage the community as well as N.O. Sewerage and Water Board and other agencies. The result is a showcase facility that is beloved by the neighborhood, mitigates flood risk, leverages existing infrastructure, and serves as a model of low-impact development.

Parkview SchoolHabitat. Stormwater. Learning.Parkview School is a Louisiana Recovery School District Project located in Gentilly Woods, New Orleans. FutureProof was tasked with providing a learning landscape that includes conservation of mature trees on the site, the exclusive use of indigenous plant material with the potential for shade and screening, wildlife habitat, and aesthetic value. The landscape also provides a water management system that can reintroduce water to the soil of the site, thereby reducing stress on the city’s stormwater system.

Landscape Integrated Stormwater Design

FutureProof was approached by Wagonner and Ball Architects to plan and design stormwater mitigation features as part of the new Art and Athletics Building. Our design channels roof water into subsurface retention features with the capacity to retain 8600 cubic feet of water for transpiration through a vegetated gravel bed, as well as to slow infiltration to the water table. Today, the installation exemplifies beauty and function, enhancing the pedestrian approach to the building and protecting the sidewalks, parking lot and neighborhood from local flood risk.

FutureProof was approached by Wagonner and Ball Architects to plan and design a landscape integrated storm water mitigation feature as part of the new Chapel at Brother Martin School. Our design daylights the subsurface roof drainage into large detention swales that mimic native marsh and forested wetland systems to mitigate localized flooding. The installation, currently under construction, will provide an elegant and attractive illustration of constructed wetlands in an urban environment.

FutureProof acted as the owner’s representative to the design team for the strategy for LEED Gold of the Professional Sciences Building and the Student Union Building. Analysis of both buildings’ construction drawings and specifications as well as meetings with the design and construction teams allowed FutureProof to identify opportunities and weaknesses of both projects. FutureProof also assisted the Professional Sciences design team with their responses to Green Building Ceritification Institute comments on the LEED design submission.

FutureProof’s campus carbon footprint inventory includes: collecting and inputting data into a specialized software, creating a baseline report summarizing current and projected greenhouse gas emissions data, and consulting on project selection that will best achieve emissions reduction.
