UPTAP Research Findings
Round 2 Commissioning
• UPTAP Round 2 call resulted in 32 applications as follows:
2 Postdoctoral Fellowships 6 Mid-career Fellowships15 Small Grants 9 Large Grants
• Commissioning meeting in May 2007
Workshop in 2007 atONS Centre of Demography
• Jonathan Swan (Head of Population Estimates and Electoral Statistics Unit, ONS) suggests:
“public session where the sets of UPTAP researchers might present their findings to the wider community and take questions/issues. If you and the ESRC did like this idea, we, that is the ONS Centre for Demography, may be able to host here in Titchfield, as we have a seminar room that can accommodate 100 people”.
• Date to be arranged - possibly September (not July or August)
BSPS Conference 2007• University of St. Andrews• Tuesday 11 - Thursday 13 September 2007 • Website conference pages at:

• Provisional title plus abstract (up to 250 words) should be submitted by Tuesday 1 May 2007
• Please submit by email to John Stillwell • 90 minute sessions with three papers per session. • Maximum for an UPTAP strand would be 4 sessions, so
that's 12 papers as an absolute maximum • Enquiries: Anne Shepherd, BSPS Secretariat• Any suggestions for plenary speakers?
• So far papers offered by Boyle, Coast, Norman, Rasulo
UPTAP meeting for Round 2 Projects
• Sometime in Autumn 2007 but this will depend on the start dates of the projects commissioned
• Possibly to coincide with the next Advisory Committee
UPTAP User Fellowships (Round 3)
• Hopefully there will be another call for UPTAP User Fellowships during autumn 2007
• Will depend on availability of finance!
ESRC Media and Communications Training Workshop for UPTAP, 2007
• Centre for Economic Policy Research, London (date to be decided)
• Run by Romesh Vaitilingham (writer and media consultant, CEP, ESRC, RES, ISER), Wendy Barnaby (freelance writer and broadcaster; editor of Science and Public Affairs) and Alister Scott (TheKnowledgeBridge)
• Content includes: effective research dissemination; how the press works; stories and press releases; how TV and radio work; being interviewed
• Will send round an email asking for names of those interested
• Date will be announced
ESRC Festival of Social Science, 2008
• Likely to be in March 2008• Some additional funding available (max £2,000)• Activity funding application form (Guidelines available) to
be submitted by beginning of December 2007

ESRC Research Methods Festival, 2008

NCRM, Southampton)• Session volunteered on
"Secondary Data Analysis for Understanding Population Trends and Processes"
- based around a series of presentations from UPTAP researchers that highlight the secondary data research methods being used and involving User Fellows in particular
EAPS, Barcelona
• 9 - 12 July 2008 at Hotel Alimara
• I offered to convene a session on behalf of UPTAP but EAPS have their own convenors and are in the process of finalizing the main topics
• Call for Abstracts coming soon
• Would like a good representation of UPTAP papers even if we don’t all present in the same session
