Definition:Healthcare Technology is electronic medical procedures, and appropriately disseminated information for patient treatments.

Hospital Information Systems (HIS)

Are Used to manage medical and administrative informationHave been around since they were first introduced in the 1960s The computers were not as fast in those days ModernHISincludes many applications addressing the needs of various departments in a hospitalAdvantages of HIS enhances information integrityreduces transcription errorsreduces duplication of information entriesoptimizes report turnaround times

Intensive Care Unitthese systems help doctors treat the patient 24 hrsSome surgery patients requires to be continually monitored in ICUthese patients are connected with sensors connected to the system that record vital signs. Since the information from these systems can be recorded on a magnetic disk

Diagnosis systemDiagnosis system is another field where the computer application is widely usedUses in diagnose cancer Computer-aided diagnosis

UCF SimulationBlood loss is one of the leading causes of death on the battlefieldwar-zone medics often find it difficult to receive the training to prevent those deathsToday they can save a life-sized arm developed by the University of Central Floridas Institute for Simulation and Training that simulates bleeding.

Remote surgeryRemote Surgery Experiments have been performed on the feasibility of remote surgery for more than a decade. First trans-Atlantic procedure in 2001 - Lindbergh operation involving a robot. The experiment showed that the robot can be well controlled under 0.5 sec latency. 1010The surgical robot is an information system with arms. This shows how all of surgery can be incorporated into a single instrument. MIS Surgery, remote surgery, pre-operative planning and surgical rehearsal of complex procedures, intra-operative image guidance, and simulation and training all focused upon improving surgery to the patient.

Remote Surgery NASA has conducted Thirteen Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO projects) since 2001 in its underwater sea habitat, Aquarius in Florida. There were 3 focusing on remote surgery recently. The 7th NEEMO project took place in October 2004, and the mission objectives included a series of simulated medical procedures with Zeus, using what is termed teleoperation and telementoring.1111Remote Surgery During the 9th mission in April 2006, the crew had to assemble and install an M7 mobile surgical robot, and perform real-time abdominal surgery on a phantom. Throughout the procedure, the time delay went up to 3 s using a microwave satellite connection to mimic the MoonEarth communication link. The 12th project ran in May 2007, where operations were performed on a simulated patient with the M7 and Raven robots.1212Remote Surgery They measured the capabilities of surgeons controlling the robots from Seattle in simulated zero gravity environment. These projects showed the effectiveness of telementoring, the possibility to operate even with 1 s of latency and proved the capabilities of the new robotic systems.1313Remote Surgery Remote surgery brings many new challenges compared to conventional robotic surgery.First, remote operate over long distances, the remote surgery system should be :Stable for the large latencies experienced over global-scale operation.System must also be stable in the presence of the jitter and packet loss characteristics of usual Internet traffic.1414Remote Surgery Remote surgery brings many new challenges compared to conventional robotic surgery: Second, during communication blackout, a backup system should be in place to complete any ongoing surgical procedures. Finally, it is beneficial to provide haptic feedback to the surgeons, since it helps minimize damage to the tissues and organs during long-distance procedures. 1515Remote Surgery Telementoring is an advanced form of telemedicine, where an experienced surgeon can guide and teach practicing surgeons new operative techniques utilizing current enabling video, robotics, and telecommunications technology. Surgical telementoring is very significant because it offers a technological solution to places around the world where few if any surgeons exist. Some of the advantages offered by this concept are :Enhancing surgeons' education.Increasing patients' access to experienced surgeons.Decreasing the complications due to inexperience with new procedures.16Telementoring16Remote Surgery The SOCRATESTM links both sites with a PolyCom FX: PolyCom FX has four ISDN lines with 512 kilo-bits per second (Kbps). The PolyCom FX was chosen because it independently bridges up to four sites, and has the capability to utilize H.320 (i.e., ISDN or T-1 lines) or H.323 (i.e., internet) protocols. This helps each site provide video teleconferencing over the internet, which would be of great value if any of these sites decide to implement an intranet-based video teleconferencing system within their institutions. It is also supported for mobile use and PolyCom Viewstations.

Try how small is nano24NanotechnologyPart of the Nanotechnology is the Nanobots or NanorobotsWhat are Nanorobots? They are robots in the scale of nanomter range that will be used in the future instead of medicineI talk about nanobots cause they are robots and computer science interfere with any robotic field25NanotechnologyWhy Nanobots? We can control them. Cause Nanobots are in same the scale of the body invaders (Bacteria , Virus.).They are supposed to be injected to the body

Disadvantages of normal medicineVirus scale 10 to 100 nanometersMedicine :It will affect every part of the body not the infected part only It has a lot of side effectsCancer : in normal human body cells divide and increase permanently ,inactive cells die and will be replaced but some time this process gets out of control cells increase in an abnormal way leading to tumor // move to chemotherapyIn some disease as cancer chemical treatment (chemotherapy) has extremely bad effect on patients like: it kills good cells as well as infected cells loss of hair , suppression for bone marrow toxic for liver and kidney26Nano-TechnologyNanobotsWhat Nanobots are expected to do ?They can treat cancer.Blocked arteriesAIDS patientsCan deliver medicineCan help to detect diseases at early stagesHow to treat cancer?Clear blocked arteriesAIDS is a disease of loss of anti bodies defenseless Nanobots can be used to replace anti bodies for those patients

How does technology affect human health?1-Pollution:

Ozone pollution can causerespiratory disease, cardiovascular disease.Water pollution causes approximately 14,000 deaths per day.656,000 people die prematurely each year inChinabecause of air pollution.Noise pollution induceshearing loss, high blood preasure, stress.Chemical andradioactivesubstances cancause cancerandas well as birth defects.

How does technology affect human health?2-Radiation: cell phones-Wireless:

Numerous studies show that was done a bad cell phone radiation on the human body. For example:increase the risk of ear tumors and brain cancer.a bad influence on brain tissue damage.Unfortunately, none of six of the worlds largest mobile phone vendor to respond to the results of these studies. Its okay to experts warned the danger of electromagnetic waves, but it almost always responded with a statement producer, Safe-safe only.

How does technology affect human health?3-Repetitive strain injury (RSI):It is an injury of the musculoskeletalandnervous systems caused by repetitive tasks : Sitting at computer for extended periods of time.driving, traveling.Holding one's phone between neck and shoulder.Watching TV in incorrect position e.g. Too much to the left/right.

How to avoid technology risks?1-Radiation: cell phones-Laptops-Wireless routers:1.We should use wired LAN instead of wireless if it is available.2.Turn off wireless adapter if you do not use it.2.We must avoid sleep near mobile.

How to avoid technology risks?2-Proper Computer position to avoid RSI:Back correct position.computer screenis directly in front Legs need regularstretching exercises.when working feet should be firmly on the ground at all timesGetting in the habit to get up and do small tasks.Wrists should be straight while working and the use of support pads can be helpful.

How to avoid technology risks?3-Touch typing:Definition : typing with all your fingers and without need for looking at the keyboard for finding the keys.is too important especially for computer science students to avoid neck and eye stress . It also save a lot of time. How can I start learning touch typing now?

How to avoid technology risks?4-Avoid radiation from Computer screen:The minimum distance between your eyes and the computer screen should be at least 60 cm. Try to adjust the brightness in your computer to the comfort level of your eyes. Take a small break of 5 minutes for every hourTry to use LCD screen which emits less radiation when compared to desktop screenIf you are using desktop monitor try to use a good radiation filter to your monitorClose your eyes and relax a bit in between your work.Questions?
