In most cases this will be a vocational area of study such as Engineering or Childcare. All core qualifications offer opportunities for progression to higher levels of study or employment, so please look carefully through our course guide to discover the wide range of vocational areas we offer.
You will have the opportunity to complete work experience or work related activity based upon your core qualification and career pathway. We have a Work Experience Co-ordinator to ensure that you will have meaningful work experience and support throughout the process.
These are essential elements of the Programme of Study and all learners will work towards achieving GCSE grade 4 in Maths and English. You may commence on a Functional Skills qualification in Maths and/or English to develop your skills in these areas. Further information on Maths & English can be found on the following page.

TUTORIALSYou will be supported by the Learner Progress team throughout your time at college (further information can be found on page 7). Tutorials occur once per term on a 1:1 basis to support your progress and achievement. You can also access tutorial resources on a range of topics to enhance your personal development, behaviour, welfare and employability skills.

If you didn’t achieve grade 4 or above in Maths or English on leaving school you will be offered support at college to work towards this and, wherever possible, to achieve the equivalent qualifications.
All full-time 16-19 year old learners will attend Maths and English on a weekly basis both during the day or on an evening to achieve recognised qualifications.
Additional support in Maths and English is very flexible and designed to meet individual needs, including workshop slots for those who miss a lesson or need extra help. All full-time students take an assessment of their Maths and English skills – so any problems can be highlighted and extra support can be provided for individual help where it is needed.
We will also provide additional practical and work related experiences to ensure that learners can develop their skills to the highest levels, to make them more attractive to employers than ever before.

explainedQualifications are offered by various examination boards at different levels. Each level represents a standard of learning. Qualifications at the same level are broadly comparable but content, purpose, duration and amount of study may vary. The qualifications in this course guide are all Entry Level or Levels 1, 2 or 3.

The GCSE grading system has changed. Instead of grades ranging from A* to G, they now range from 9 to 1 with 9 being the highest grade achievable (although there is still a grade U for those who fail to achieve the minimum requirements for grade 1).
Grade 5 is considered a ‘good pass’, with performance tables focusing on students achieving grades 9-5. The old system takes a grade C as a benchmark for a ‘good pass’, but the new grade 5 is equivalent to a low B or high C.
