Ledray/JOURNAL OF EMERGENCY NURSING
SummaryClearly communicating with other professionals andwith sexual assault survivors about the boundariesand limitations of the SANE medical-forensic exami-nation is important. Although SANEs work coopera-tively in an interdisciplinary sexual assault responseteam model to better meet the needs of sexual assaultvictims, they function as independent professionalnurses in their role of collecting medical forensic evi-dence. Properly defined to focus on assessment, iden-tification, and documentation of trauma, the SANErole is an independent professional role but is stillwithin the scope of basic nursing practice. The an-swer to our question, “Is the SANE role advancedpractice nursing or is it within the scope of basicnursing practice?” is thus “The SANE role is clearlywithin the scope of basic nursing practice.”
