• Lower system impact from few heavy users • Reduce the discrepancies between cell-‐edge and cell center performances
either via densifica7on or in limi7ng the interferences based on LTE/LTE-‐A interface
• Main technologies: CoMP, Advanced receiver, Relay enhanced cells

DOCOMO’s Phantom cell concept
• Utilizes system concept comprised of two overlaid NWs: – Umbrella Network: comprised of Control Plane BS
• Operate in currently existing frequency bands (e.g., 2 GHz) • Use currently standardized systems (e.g., LTE) and guarantee
backwards compatibility for legacy MSs – Detached Cell Network (DCN): comprised of several User Plane
BSs • Operating in different (higher) frequency bands (e.g., 3.5 GHz). • Each U-plane BS is connected to the C-plane BS through a backhaul link

Intelligent network with low cost & high robustness
• Flexible and cost-efficient NW deployments – Increased capacity per NW cost
– Efficient utilization of higher and wider frequency spectrum bands – Efficient support of different types of backhaul – Efficient support for diverse environments
e.g., wide area and local area
• Energy/battery saving – NW energy saving & UE battery saving
