Decarbonization Decentralization

Democratization Digitalization

The grid is increasingly

decentralized as technology

costs decline and investment

in distributed energy

resources (DERs) grow

Advances in digital control and communication are enabling intelligent asset networks and Internet of Things

Customers wanting flexibility and choice, technology advancements and the rise of DERs are democratizing energy supply

Increasing focus to transition to a low carbon economy through fuel switching and energy efficiency

Pace of Innovation

MIT’s Technology Review study

• 30 years for electricity and 25 years for telephones to

reach 10% adoption

o but < 5 years for tablet devices to achieve the 10%

• 39 years for telephones to reach 40% penetration and

another 15 before they became ubiquitous / everywhere

o Smart phones reach 40% in just 10 years

• The pace of change is increasing

o more market entrants

o fewer barriers to entryThe Pace of Technology

Adoption is Speeding Up

• Adoption rate of grid edge technologies likely to follow the typical S-curve

• Difficult to forecast when technologies reach a tipping point and adoption occurs exponentially

• Mass adoption timeframe has decreased to at most 15 years

Dan J. Pastoric C.Dir., MBA, B.Eng., P.Eng.

Dan has been in the energy sector since 1982. Starting with Ontario Hydro in numerous roles. In 1999, he

founded an energy services company which currently operates in three countries. He was appointed to the

Ontario government's “electricity” Market Design Committee, representing the Commercial Customer sector, with

the mandate to redesign the electricity sector. He served on the inaugural Board of Directors of the Independent

Electricity System Operator and was elected inaugural Chair of the Board’s Industry Stakeholder Committee.

He rejoined the public utility sector in 2008 becoming Hydro Mississauga’s Chief Operating Officer. After six years focused on

directing safe and efficient operations of Enersource Hydro Mississauga, as well as ensuring continued strong financial

performance and maintaining full regulatory compliance, he transformed his role into the sector’s first Chief Customer Officer. His

responsibilities included increasing shareholder value in both the regulated and competitive businesses, as well as leading a

corporate strategy focused on being more customer-centric, driving consolidation and a greater emphasis on rate regulated

assets opportunities. As a result, he was instrumental in Hydro Mississauga’s merger with PowerStream and Horizon Utilities and

the purchase of Hydro One Brampton which resulted in the largest LDC transaction in Ontario’s history - creating Alectra. At

Alectra – he is responsible for Corporate Strategy, M&A, Sustainability, Community Energy Initiatives and Special Projects. Within

its inaugural year, he led Alectra’s M&A team in the successful merger transaction with Guelph Hydro and is now working on the

next evolution of Alectra’s strategy.

He has been very active in the communities where he works and lives, serving on several Boards for community Non-Profit and

For Profit organizations.

Dan is a Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario, holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree and a Masters in
